Bartok the Magnificent - Nostalgia Critic

Ойын-сауық

Don Bluth has made some great films, but does Anastasia’s comic relief fall in that category? Critic looks at the odd little spin off that takes flight in Bartok the Magnificent.
Support this week's charity - preventchildabuse.org/
Bartok the Magnificent, directed by Don Bluth and Gary Goldman, is a 1999 direct-to-video spin-off and prequel to the 1997 film Anastasia, which features Hank Azaria as the voice of Bartok, Kelsey Grammer as the voice of Zozi, and Jennifer Tilly as Piloff.

Interestingly enough, I never considered Bartok as a villain. Just a very loyal sidekick. I always figured for whatever reason Rasputin took care of him, so Bartok was loyal to him. It's shown he has pretty loose morals but a lot of loyalty in this, so this makes sense as either a sequel or prequel pretty easily to me.

For anyone wondering, it is indeed apparently meant to be a prequel since it's set in a Russia before the Russian Revolution has occurred. Which does make it weird that Bartok is working for Rasputin in Anastasia but eh, what are you going to do......

  • @DoctorWhoKage

    @DoctorWhoKage

    5 жыл бұрын

Well, it was said that they killed Rasputin at the beginning of the movie. Which means Bartok might've been Rasputin's servant before he was killed. And when Rasputin necromanced himself to life, Bartok immediatley rejoined him out of fear of being killed for being disloyal. This spin-off takes place between when Anastasia's family was murdered to when Anastasia turns 18. Oh, and despite what Doug says, this spin-off clearly does not take place in Moscow. It's some un-named Russian village in the middle of nowhere.

That's actually an interesting observation, I would digress slightly and say that fear is not bad, it's a cue to danger and being aware of dangers is key to defeating or avoiding said dangers. As the saying goes, "There is a fine line between bravery and stupidity." Now I will digress fully by wondering if Bluth was himself a proto-fur. Fun fact, another animator from disney, Shawn Keller is supposed to have created the first fursuit after losing a bet in 1982 and would go on to work with Don on NIMH, Thumbelina, and A Troll in Central Park only later to join Don's late younger brother Toby, David Kuhn (an animator of the animaniacs) and Kevin Singleton who had won an emmy for the art direction of Clifford the Big Red Dog. Together they formed CAAT Studios (Classical Animation & Advanced Technology) in 2004 but by '07 the domain was vacated i've never come across any animation work claimed by their studio....oh wait, was that my weird side? Eh, one person's weird is another person's mundane anyway...

I think it's a prequel because if Prince Ivan is based on a young (kid friendly) version of Ivan the terrible, than this takes place around the 1540's or 1550's. In which case this film would have happened 350 something years before the events of Anastasia which starts in 1916.

To be fair, there's hardly a shortage of male animated dragons. Off the top of my head, there's Smaug from the Hobbit movies, Devon and Cornwall from Quest for Camelot, and Draco from Dragonheart. ...There are probably some examples from good movies, too.

As a kid, I watched Fievel Goes West a ton. It wasn't until much later when I learned there was a prior movie. I didn't watch it until about a decade ago, when I was already an adult. It was very good, but I haven't seen it again since then. I should give it another go.

68 feet long, 5 feet wide? Perpendicular section? So the fence is 5 feet thick? That's a wall. A very thick wall. What is a parallel section? Just another fence positioned perpindicularly? Or are you trying to imply two lengths of fence with 90 turns? Twice as long as what? And what does a skeleton key have to do with witches? That's dumb.

Yes, at least I did. Or it could have been just me who found it funny and my older sister would point them out and make a joke just to make me laugh. She could be a good big sister like that sometimes, ya know? Other times, she picked on me, and our eldest sister had to break it up. I miss those innocent days when it was all three of us.

Parasol Mushroom Art I'll admit the movie has it's flaws (what made Anya let go of her grandma's hand and fall so hard, anyway? The sequence was pretty unclear to me), but the whole film is a great experience. ESPECIALLY with the soundtrack. Maybe if he'd reviewed Golden Film's "Anastasia" or even "The Secret of Anastasia", Critic would probably appreciate Bluth's film more.

_"what made Anya let go of her grandma's hand and fall so hard, anyway?"_ Maybe the ensuing panic and exhaustion of having to suddenly flee for her life to the nearest train for god knows how many kilometers increased the pain. Head trauma especially in kids is no joke brah. Anyways yeah Anastasia's animation is ballin' and is a classic movie. Doug is weird.

Really? Your *favorite?* That surprises me, but everyone is entitled to their opinion. Personally, I like the movie. I think it is one of the best Disney light movies I have seen. That being the movies that shamelessly tried to rip off of what Disney was doing so well. Most of those were awful, but a few, like Anastasia, did it well. I think it is weaker than most of the Disney lineup, but I still think it is a good movie.

We could chalk the fact this takes place as a prequel and is probably close to some 300ish years in the past compared to Anastasia to Bartok being bewitched or granted immortality by Baba Yaga in exchange for servitude. That could also explain how he came to become allies with Rasputin since he in this lore was also involved in magic. A young Rasputin seeks out the help of the Baba Yaga to gain access to magical properties. Baba Yaga sees potential in this young man and treats him much like family and has pride as he initially uses his powers for good (healing Alexi) , but Rasputin, greedy for power, begins to use the magic taught to him for dark purposes. She sends Bartok to try to keep an eye on him when he strays from her as a way to have tabs on him. Bartok does everything in Anastasia strictly as a Service to Baba Yaga for his immortality and prosperity. Zozi died of natural causes.
