I like how iris is implied to be the only one that thinks something might be going on. All she says is “you gave a eulogy at the funeral” she didn’t get mad that he thought joe was still alive. She sounded more confused and suspicious then everyone else who was just upset that Barry was “making a joke”. She knows that Barry would never joke about joe dying and he would never forget no matter how “insane” he got. She knows that something happened to make him forget and I like that even in this episode their relationship was shown to be strong enough that iris didn’t just disregard what Barry said, she was instantly concerned about why he doesn’t remember.

Iris could also be the only one that can feel somethings off, because she has a little bit of speed force in her. End of last season she got boosted by speed force to be a speedster for a bit (cause there was a spark inside of her), this would make her slightly immune to the timeline knowledge changes like Barry is, so it would make sense for her to tell something is slightly off.

That's his punishment for saying that the Forces are Barry's kids.

This twist was like a punch in the gut. Joe’s one of the few characters fans of this show truly admire and learning he died is so sad.

I love how they think Barry is the one who is crazy, when they know he can literally change the past and has done so on multiple occasions. Especially Katalin and Iris, just doesn't make sense from a logic standpoint. Also, he saved the entire multiverse, give the guy a break.

I remember when this scene showed i was like hold up when did joe die ? I was so confused

This episode just felt so eerie. Like a dream or elseworld. Everything that could go wrong, did go wrong to the point that I thought Despero was testing Barry's will. Barry is under investigation at his job, Star Labs got shut down, and a mind-meta was messing with him. Also, that Joe reveal! I thought it was weird when he wasn't in the first episode, but didn't think much about it since it was one episode. The matter was brought up again when we saw Kramer, but no Joe. Then Cecil mentioned going through some stuff and I got even more suspicious.

The fact that we see this from Barry's perspective. We don't see him go crazy. We don't see a passage of time just like him. We don't know when the timeline shifted. We don't know if this timeline where Joe's death happens was swapped to 6 months ago or in this very sequence. AND WOW. That was forshadowed super hard. Cecile in her office? OOF. And here I thought it was just Despero's thoughts and her empath abilities. BUT NO. WOW. Just wow. And yeah, having to go through the grief that someone died 6 months ago and you can't remember it? That would drive anyone insane.

One thing I found weird is that almost no one takes Barry seriously. If the one guy who is capable of insane time and space feats thinks something is off at the very least Caitlin would treat this as extremely serious and look at things more critically.

You know, I thought this scene was absolutely amazing. I loved the 1st episode with Barry absolutely wrecking the Royal Flush Gang, and when I was watching this episode, when it got to a bit before this scene hit, I was thinking that it was going to be a bit of a “meh” episode with weird new superpowers. But when this scene hit, it instantly became one of my favorite flash episodes.

This season was amazing and had me invested into what was happening I also loved the black flame part that was a nice mystery also and a twist

Love that this was foreshadowed since episode one.

Joe is NOT dead, rewatched season 7 finale over again to make sure. He is very much alive. Edit: The “death” date for Joe is May 23, 2021, this could be an easter egg back to season 3 when Iris was supposed to die from Savitar on May 23, 2017

I think this is what might happen for this season finale: Thawne became fast enough to change the timeline & kill Joe West, but covered it up as something else. Barry doesn’t realize it which is why he finds out the truth only 6 months later. Barry & Thawne have a big battle (bumper cars style) throughout the city. Then Barry & Thawne travel 6 months prior to Joe’s house & have a speedster fight inside similar to the very beginning of the show in Nora Allen’s house. Barry saves Joe, possibly restoring the timeline & defeats Thawne. *Edit* I just got done with watching Ep. 3 and now know that the timeline hasn't actually changed (It did change, but this time it wasn't done by speed), but was pretty close. And I really did not expect that cliff hanger. To be clear: I know what happened, so please don't comment hateful things because my theory was wrong a bit.

Reverse flash is definitely altering shit. If he can't beat him 1 on 1 then he's going to mess things off to get him off his game. Speedsters retain memories of their past lives. Even if time sets and forget they can eventually remember. In DC Rebirth when Redhead Wally West is fading in and out of existence, Barry finally remembers Wally despite the timeline being "set"

And tbh, I feel like at least Caitlyn should have had a theory that maybe time travel is the reason Barry didn’t remember considering that Barry also didn’t know anything about post-flashpoint and only had memories of the timeline before flashpoint. Like how he had no idea of why Cisco was mad at him or that Dante had died. Or that Joe and Iris were mad at each other.

@@jet5299 he despises Barry what are you talking about? Before he became reverse flash he was a mentally unstable man who grew up idolized the Flash thafs why he wanted to become just like him. When he goes back in time and eventually realizes that he is the reverse flash and that was his destiny he snaps and loses it and blames barry for it partially He does not care about Barry at all he hates him and wants to destroy him

@@ethantstone don't forget tbe realization that he was the flash's worst enemy drove him absolutely insane and he had issues before He even believed he WAS Barry. Eobard might have cared about Barry but Eobard as reverse flash despises him

Insane plot twist and the best one in the history of the flash other than Barry being savitar or Savitar tricking HR by pretending to be barry

Not really, Despero is considered one of the most monstrous villains in DC Comics. He's brought several version of the Justice League and Justice Society of America to their knees with his manipulations. Now this version of Despero could be completely different since this is CW Despero.

I think reverse flash is doing what he did in the comics, he’s going to every part of the flashes timeline in order to make him go insane and start Armageddon

Unless they've been whammied to not question things. What Barry needs to ask is: "How did Joe die?" Everyone's focusing a little too much on the statement of fact that he *did* die that any details are pretty much nonexistent

Okay for a show where time travel is real and when they’ve seen the most unimaginable shit. Its kind of unbelievable for everyone to be guilt tripping barry. Especially cecile; “why cant you just accept that” for a guy who time travels and suddenly finds out his step father dead. The whole team makes it a big deal how barry is wrong. And watch when his suspicions are confirmed noone is gonna apologize. I hate the part of the show where the team is so damn involved

Exactly, people keep saying how good the writing is but I disagree. Like the people around Barry don't suspect that somethings going on when he acts all freaked out, like they know the timeline can change but no let's just have a go at Barry for being weird.

joe was like the socks to my feet when its cold i hope hes not gone ..

By far one of the best twists in the show

The twist was great. Hands down. I think the moments of discovery in the writing or maybe through the acting could have been better. Like the anger and knowingness of the team... might have been served better, if they didn't get it either. Hear me out... what if everybody was confused. We the audience don't know right. Barry doesn't seem to know... ok. And what if team, doesn't know what Barry is talking about either? Question Barry. Have him explain himself. Then, prove it to him. Everybody seemed to get angry-- like Cecil... seemed quick & out of character. Maybe, she wanted to believe... or breaks down and griefs at loss... or is still in shock... it was written and played as they all know & he doesn't. Maybe, layers or subtlety or at least not so black & white, you know. Ps.... Barry's reaction was good....

@@Niop_Tres Thanks. I got that. And I thought Barry"s hurt was clear. No question. If the team was less sure or knowing...more space for levels or nuance. Cecil's anger was big & out of character. When you have lost someone - you would do anything to believe it didn't happen or it was a mistake. Besides, there could have been more possibilities or choices I think.

I think that Barry will go back in time to see what happened to Joe because if the timeline changed then he only has a certain amount of time to change things before they “set” in motion

If you look at the day Joe died. It says May 23. However we saw him in the last episode of season 7 which was on July 20th.

They also said it's been six months since the finale. If they went by July 20th that would mean it's January 2022 but it's not. So they're not establishing the timeline by going by the ending of last season, they're going by the beginning of this season.

Ever since covid shut down flash at the end of season 6 and into season 7, the timeline of the show has been a bit confusing. Usually the events of the show happen real time with us viewers (look back flash 5x08 ciscos whiteboard where it shows certain events happening on the exact day it airs on tv for us)

Season 7 is a bit of an outlier to the idea of the seasons happening in real time. The season officially took place around the same time every season before it did, from late fall to spring. Had season 7 aired normally it would've aired it's season finale some time in late April of this year.

I don't know who really needs to hear this, you've got stop saving money. Invest some part of it, if you really want financial freedom.

This reminds me of season 3 after flashpoint when Barry asked Wally and Joe where Iris was cause he didn’t know they didn’t talk anymore. But this seems 3 times worse. Lol

Right, thank you the only person who had a realistic reaction was iris in this. realizing something not right with Barry but doesn't try to mess his head up even more than it might be.

This is despero running psychic simulations to find the outcome that will break Barry Every time Barry encounters a problem he finds a solution but Despero creates another problem after it

@@Lc0892 Not necessarily unlikely. Despero's abilities include illusion and reality-warping. What better simulation than one that plays out in reality? The difference is, I'd suspect it wasn't Barry who got whammied but the rest of the team

I don't think this is thawne's doing, I think this is the side effect of his madness like Despero said. Maybe because he is going insane, he forgot that Joe died. Cause if the timeline changed or if it's an illusion, the speed force would've probably told him.

i like your theory and think it’s possible, this scenario reminds me a lot of the ELSEWORLDS crossover, where everyone in the world believed the oliver was barry and barry was oliver, and only those two knew the truth. the two results that are most plausible are either (like you said) he’s going insane and joes offscreen death is canon, it’s just a problem with barry that he doesn’t remember. OR, someone’s messed with HIS reality (similar to elseworlds) except this time it’s to make him LOOK and APPEAR insane, which could lead to his eventual insanity in that 10 year time span they laid out
