Barrina LED Garage Opener Light Upgrade

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This is pretty simple and can be completed with just two items, the LED's and the socket adapter. The other parts are extra for a clean install if you are comfortable modifying the power cable.
I used the Barrina LED T5 Integrated Single Fixture, 4FT, 2200lm, 5000K, 20W

This is the GE socket adapter:

Solder seal wire connectors:

Wire stripper:

Matt, I think the reason why the opener light indicates a 75 watt bulb is because incandescent bulbs larger than 75 watts are very hot and would melt the plastic cover of the opener.

I did this exact same mod to my opener last year, and I really love it. I spaced my lights out a bit more, and then added more controlled by the light switch by the door. It is a truly significant difference going out into my garage now, you can easily see and when pulling your car in on just the ones controlled by the opener, it really helps as our garage is still a bit cluttered. Great Video!

Thank you for this video. You made making this upgrade straightforward and simple. It's made a huge difference. Instead of using a socket to outlet I used a Leviton outlet and bulb socket adapter and put in an LED nightlight bulb to fit in the diffuser housing so it still lights up.

For those of you that are more electrical tech savvy and want more lights you can. I converted my garage into a woodworking shop and installed 6 - 4ft flourescent light fixtures (each with 2 -40W bulbs for 480 watt total which draws 4 amps ). I connected them all in parallel with wiring run in the attic. I ran a dedicated 15 amp circuit to the line side of 20amp /120v coil contactor (approx $18) and the load to the lights. I connected the contactor coil (which draws has

Nicely done! My own garage lighting enhancement was to add a motion-sensing socket adapter to the one switched bulb socket [which I leave on]. To that I added a one-to-five bulb converter [using 5000K LED bulbs]. You get a better light spread with those long LEDs, but the motion-sensing aspect gives me light longer if I linger in the garage [versus the relatively short garage door opener timer]. I used a socket converter like you did for my one switched bulb socket in my basement, and then added Barrina LEDs to every other floor joist. Had to do one just splice. Tremendous upgrade!

Great Video, I added a battery backup to my garage door opener because it didn’t come with one and I don’t have a side entire door, in a power outage the light for the opener is awful and I need more if I have a power outage for hooking up the generator for back feeding.

that 75 W label is mostly for HEAT generated by the Bulb so it does not melt plastic. OTOH there is a limit on the switching circuit and the power cord/outlet.

Some LEDs do not play nice with garage door openers. They provide radio interference with the transmission of the remote to the receiver. I experienced this when I replaced the bulbs on my Chamberlain with LEDs. Opening the door was no problem as the lights were off. Once the LEDs came on, the door would not close with the remote. That is why they sell special LEDs for garage door openers.

I like your approach. I did something similar, but I used an LED bulb (11 watt, about $3) in a remote electrical box above opener, plug in also. These are general lights not task lights. I prefer to use a task light depending on what I am doing. General lighting is only to see where you’re going, so you don’t trip or bump into something. If you’re going to work on car, etc. you still need another light. Thanks….Jim PS…..Your preference!

I did that mod on my old opener and the range of my remote dropped to just outside the door. Before that I could open it coming up the driveway so it was fully open by the time I got to the garage. After going to LED light, I had to wait until I was right up to the door. My new door installer said to just use regular light bulbs or florescent bulbs instead.

yes, alot LED lights will interfere with the newer garage door opener frequencies. Tons of stuff on it online... They also sell some RF blockers you can put on the power cords for the lights that are supposed to block some of the frequencies... not sure if they are effective or not

  • @MattCoykendall1

    @MattCoykendall1

@@chadhickey9942 That's the good thing about this modification, people experience interference because they replace the bulb inside the opener with an LED. This mod has the lights on your ceiling far away from the antenna just like all your other garage lights. I have zero antenna performance issues with this configuration in my video.

Did you have any issues with interface when closing/opening your door? (Only seems to happen when the lights are actually lit) I had an issue after installing led lights. It seems to me it'd be easier to just replace your regular garage light switch with a motion detector switch. That way any time there is movement in your garage, all the lights come on. $20 at Home Depot...
