Barn owl with 4 owlets
Four rescued barn owlets have been fully adopted by a resident surrogate owl at South Plains Wildlife Rehab Ctr, Lubbock TX. The owlets will be released into the wild when they can fly and feed themselves. (The parent has a disability and has sanctuary at the Center).
Seen here is the phenomenal mantling and toe dusting display with the owlets under and behind her.

So sweet how she protects then with her wings...
Wow really amazing behavior for a disabled, surrogate parent to display so much.
Beautiful 👏Super mama 🤗
Gorgeous!
She looks like she's sizing you up. I think she'll give you a real body of hurt if you mess with her babies. Along with the sheltering of the wings for her little ones and a head shaking of toe dusting. All those are signs to not mess with her... She means business! 👀🦉
How did you get her to imprint on the owlets? Cause I've heard that if you want to get a parent to imprint, you have to wait for them to leave then place the owlets.

staff just slide in a back of owlets, and this pair - male and female - do all the rest, including threatening staff when they go in to leave food.

Did they do it while the parents were watching? Cause I've heard that if you introduce them while parents are watching, they get aggressive.

@@stuffstuff3455 yes, they did it with the surrogate parents watching and yes, they can get aggressive. these surrogate parents were NOT educational birds, handled by the staff, like the other raptors. they were kept in their 'wild' state to raise 'wild' owlets for release.

Why didn't she attack them then? Is it a random thing or is there a specific way you did it?
Is that their nest?
