ALL ABOUT THE BARN OWL - BARNEY
Barney was one of my favourite owls here at Fotherdale. He had lived here for over 4 years but sadly, on the 23rd of October, I saw him for what would be the last time.
HOW DID THIS BARN OWL DIE?
Could he have sustained one too many attacks, been hit by a vehicle, or did he simply die of old age? At around 4 years old, Barney was already beyond the average lifespan for a wild barn owl.
This video gives you a look back on this barn owl's extraordinary life story here at Fotherdale.
2017
Barney burst onto the scene back in 2017, pairing up with his first barn owl mate, in the elm stump. I watched them courting and preparing the nest for their first clutch of barn owl chicks together. Barney as well as raising this clutch of 4 raised 4 more barn owl chicks that I fostered onto the brood.
Barney lost his mate at the end of 2017, but Barney partnered again with a new female barn owl that we named Gylfie.
2018
Barney and Gylfie were soon courting and mating in the elm stump, beginning what would be a three-year partnership.
With the new owl relationship blossoming, Barney would do anything to provide for Gylfie, even fighting off tawny owls on the feeding post, which is no mean feat for the much smaller barn owl.
And soon his hard work paid off, I watched as Gylfie revealed the pair’s first clutch of 3 eggs!
Barney and Gylfie cared for the barn owl chicks well, and they soon grew into strong young owls, fledging in the late summer.
2019
As the next barn owl breeding season came around, Barney and Gylfie began courting again, and soon the pair had another clutch of 4 eggs! 3 of the chicks hatched successfully. They grew quickly and were soon ready for fledging. This is my favourite moment as the owls venture to the nest entrance for the first time. As this first brood was fledging from elm stump, Gylfie was already sitting on eggs over in the sycamore stump nest. This double brood was a first for the barn owls of Fotherdale.
2020
In 2020 the pair headed back to elm stump nest for a new brood. Gylfie laid 3 eggs. But the second chick seemed unable to break out of the egg and the 3rd didn't hatch out either.
Barney seems to mourn the loss of this unborn barn owl chick. I named the surviving chick Solo, and as an only chick, she grew fast.
Meanwhile, Barney and Gylfie prepared for a second brood, it was unusual though as Solo hadn't yet fledged and I was intrigued to see what might happen. Unusually, a nearly adult Solo even took a turn brooding the eggs. As Gylfie continued to incubate, a fully fledged Solo stayed in the nest to keep her mother company.
Barney was a bit put out, as Solo took advantage of food meant for his brooding partner.
As the second brood of three owl chicks hatched, disaster struck after a stormy weekend, when a hungry Solo undertook a nest raid. Stealing food from her mother’s beak, before grabbing the largest chick in the brood! Gylfie was torn between her maternal instincts for her grownup daughter and the tiny owl chick.
Solo killed the owl chick, grabbing it by the neck. Gylfie was close behind her, chasing Solo from the nest. Gylfie returned to her two remaining chicks followed by Barney who seemed confused, looking for the lost chick.
Thankfully, the two remaining owl chicks, Hans and Grete, were unharmed. Barney provided for them well. He even attempted to feed them when Gylfie was away! Soon, Hans and Grete were soon ready to fledge. Barney truly was an incredible barn owl, and fantastic father.
In his time with us here at Fotherdale, Barney fathered a total of 15 chicks, and helped to raise 5 more surrogate chicks too! It truly was an honour to be a part of his life here.
But as one chapter draws to a close another opens and I'm delighted that Gylfie has now found a new mate Finn.

As a Registered Nurse who worked in Critical Care for 30 years, I have heard many first hand accounts from patients who were clinically dead and revived. Childrens accounts were the most interesting of all. There are also patients who are dying who speak to family members who had already died, there to escort them to beyond. They have even seen their beloved pets. Until you have researched this topic extensively, perhaps you should remain quiet. These accounts have existed throughout the millennium. Who are you to deny thousands upon thousands of peoples experience after they were pronounced dead?

Barney was way more than just an owl. He was a legend. With all his love and effort he gave his life to the next generation. With his last fledgeling, Howi, his tale ended and he did hard work that really paid off. All the animals across GB know his tale and will remember it through the once he met on his way. To mention the most famous ones: Gylfie his love, Bandita the stoat, Bomber his arch enemy, Mrs. Kes the Kestrel, all his children and of course Robert. I will never forget the times he went out in rain and storm to feed his chicks and how exhausted and wet he did sit in the sun all day after. Also to mention my personal highlight, the way Barney left the owl tower by his own special move. He tilted and dropped face first like he meant to do a dive bomb. I hope there is still some footage of that. In memorial Barney the Barn owl. Barney the handsome. Barney the loving father. Barney the Tawny slayer. Barney the one and only legend. We will keep you in our minds and hearts. We should build you a memorial.

Barney was such a great mate to Gylfie and a wonderful dad to Hans and Grete. I was always impressed by his consistent dedication to his family. He gave it his all. You could tell that by how quickly and soundly he would fall asleep in the tower. He kept his commitment to his chicks even when Gylfie was wearing out a bit. Thank you Robert and Team for honoring him with his Life Story. I love all the owls at Fotherdale, but there will never be another Barney. Finn has big talons to fill.

I thought birds lived for many years, like 100. Poor little Barney. He was a very attentive husband and father. It amazed me how astute he was about the discarded egg and how he examined his baby to be sure it was doing good. Love knows no bounds, it truly is the strongest thing in the universe. Thank you Robert for your dedication to these beautiful creatures.

Wow, Barney was a real legend. So pretty too! I remember being so heartbroken when I heard what happened with Solo. I can only guess that she got incredibly stressed out by something because she almost seemed like she was in a panic when she entered the nest. Gylfie's confusion over not wanting harm to come to either of her young and being frozen like that hurts to watch.

Barney has quietly but consistently shown all of his children how to be a good partner and parent. I can only hope that he passed on due to old age and nothing painful or malicious as that would break my heart. I get so invested in their lives as REF really makes us feel like we’re watching a ROM-COM with a bit of drama or sadness. Each video is a new episode and keeps us wanting more. What a magnificent experience and gift we were given to have watched Barney over the years. He was such a glorious and sensitive male owl who successfully and lovingly fathered 20 children over the years that he was close to you. May he Rest In Peace and continue to watch over his huge family. He really was a truly majestic and impressive owl. I’ll miss seeing him in your videos as I’m a fairly new subscriber. I just found this channel and already in love. I can see why so many people loved Barney. He was truly a great, wonderful owl. I never thought birds in general had so much emotion. Sometimes I feel like animals care more for their mates and offspring than some people.

Beautiful, Robert. You’ve portrayed the story of an owl’s life as richly as an saga or epic. Barney was the hero of his very own Greek myth.

Ohhh i have followed for some months now and have eee to such tragedy. Not just with owls but other beautiful creatures.. thank you so much for sharing all the beauty . I love to understand where Gylfie started in Fotherdale. I can't believe almost that owls survive shorter than some spiders (which i love too). I love every extraordinary being which is everyone. I understand a bit more from your reminiscences with amazing camera work that we have this insight! I wish I could relay properly the delight and value of your work. Also how people can connect on the 24 hr comments cams. It's providing good sustenance when the world is so difficult

What a magnificent video. Barney was definitely a great owl. I learnt alot from this. I cried my Heart out at the end. Knowing that he lived to be 4yrs old and it being a very good age was wonderful. There is nothing finer than Nature. It is my greatest joy in life. Thank you for all you do to teach us so much.

Brilliant work Rob. I'm thinking that must be a unique profile of most of the life of a single UK Barn Owl and so highlights the constant struggle to survive and breed every year. Thanks for all you do.. I've done a lot with my local Barn Owls in the last ten years (made a couple of videos about them on my KZread channel ) but here in Kent there are so many landowners/farmers (and of course developers/local planning etc) with minimal interest in helping the very wildlife they claim to "love to see" that it's an uphill battle ...
