Barn Find Camaro - Will it RUN AND DRIVE 600 Miles Home?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This 1989 Camaro RS was stored in a barn. I flew into Ohio and have no option, other than to make it run and drive again. Will it start? Will I actually make it home?

I live a mile from this barn. A friend of mine owned this car back in the early 90s. I was in highschool then and owned an 84 Trans am with the HO 305, 460 holly, 411s. We use to race a quarter mile we had marked out on a country road outside of town. There was about 8 or so of us who would meet and cruise up town and eventually we knew where we would end up lol. Love seeing this. My Trans am was with me till about 3 years ago.

This episode made me both happy and sad. My son Tony was born 1989. He was always a motorhead from the time he could get ahold of tools. Grandpa let him work on mowers, lawntractors, and pretty much anything else with a motor since he was 4 or 5 years old. By the time Tony was a teenager, he was repairing and "speedifying" motors of all kinds for people all over our neighborhood and beyond. Tony's first car was a Geo Metro that I picked up for him cheap. It lasted thru part of a summer of crazy fun with him and his friends; (the stories I heard after he was grown made me happy that I was blissfully unaware when he had the car.) Then I got him a 1978 Chevy K-10 pick-up. HE LOVED THIS TRUCK! But I made him sell it after someone turned in front of him in (of all things) a Geo and he literally drove over it and bent the frame on the pickup. This mom didn't have the same sense of value for vehicles that he did so I forced him to sell but I matched him $ for $. He took that money and Tony's first car that he sought out and bought for himself as a teenager was a 1989 Camaro that was almost like the car in this episode. It was his baby for years. He believed the Camaro was made for him and I believe he loved this car more than the K-10 simply because the mfr date of the Camaro was April 1989; Tony's birthday is 4/7/1989. Tony graduated high school and then went to a local college and obtained an automotive technician associates degree. He then became a licensed master mechanic. When he got all of his is mechanic certifications, I transferred title of his grandpa's 2001 Pontiac Bonneville with 25,025 miles. Grandpa had passed away in 2003 and I held onto it for Tony. The Bonneville became his daily driver and he put his Camaro into a storage unit along with a brand new motor in a crate. He intended to do a ground up, bumper to bumper restoration on his Camaro when he got time. Tony also raced at local track for a couple of years 2017-2018 and drove a Dodge Challenger that he painted orange like the General Lee. Around 2019 Tony's life went sideways and he never could get it back under control. He lost the storage unit and his prized Camaro for non-payment around 2019. I lost Tony in 2022. He is my only child. My life is so danged empty without him. VGG episodes helps bring back a little bit of Tony. Your enthusiasm for getting a vehicle running reminds me so much of Tony. I enjoy watching VGG episodes, even at times thru tears. I wish my son were still around and doing what you are doing today. I know he would be one of your biggest fans. Keep wrenching and enjoying life. Keep the videos coming. Thank you VGG!

Just pressure wash it from engine bay to trunk lid, de-rodent the innards & just enjoy it. Retro steering wheel would improve the peeper show when scooting around. This car seems well made. Everyone was bitching about quality back then. Would a 1988 Honda be any better? Less fun, that’s for sure. Ok, it’d return 30mpg+ but not be enjoyable.

Honestly, the content on this channel is absolutely top drawer stuff. When I first heard about the channel, I had absolutely no intention of watching an hour of recovery on old rigs and now, having enjoyed it so much, I'm delighted to see a two hour episode! Big respect from this side of the pond for your knowledge and hilarious delivery. This channel is now just about my favourite!

A tip for when trying to break a seized engine free with a manual gearbox, you'll get the maximum torque on the engine using the highest gear (5th for a 5-speed). That engine would have probably turned with the gearbox in 5th (and clutch released) and rocking the car forwards and backwards. You want to basically get the car bouncing against the backlash in the power train. I used to work for an antique car&tractor collector in the 80's and we unseized literally 100's of engines this way.

Just LOVE watching these videos. My dad was a mechanic all his life - never read a book or took a class - learned from his dad who was an Army mechanic in WW2. I see so many of the things you do - like reading spark plugs or just listening and getting a feel for the engine - that my dad used to do too. No machines or computers telling them what's wrong. Old school wrench turning. Growing up I would work in my dad's shop after school and on the weekends and he would teach me the basics and I'd help him with the rest. He had 1 other mechanic who worked with him - John - who was also never formally trained at all - just learned from his dad also. John started with my dad the day he graduated grade 12 and worked for him for about 20 years. John was not only a complete natural when it came to fixing cars and a genius - he was also a comedian. He would joke and laugh with me non stop as a young kid hanging out in dads shop. The 3 of us just had the best time all the time no matter what. You remind me so much of my dad and John when I watch your videos. You are so smart with the cars like they both were, and you're so funny while you do it just like John was. I didn't go into mechanics at all when I grew up - been in health care now for over 30 years so finding your channel has brought me back to those amazing childhood memories in my dads shop - and I thank you so much for that. Don't ever stop.

I used to turn wrenches professionally until 1998 when I got burned out then switched to construction. I remember GM cars of that time period had whats called a VATS security system where there was a silver chip on the side of the ignition key. One could not simply make a hardware store copy of this special key because of this chip. The way it worked was the VATS computer would read the resistance of the chip on the key if it was wrong or non existent, the car would experience what you found on this video. Both the fuel pump and starter would be disabled; which also explains why you have a mechanical pump instead of the electric in the tank. They probably didn't know how to diagnose the VATS problem or didn't know about this security system. The common failure with the VATS system was the ignition lock cylinder has 2 wires in it which rock back and fourth with every key stroke. Over time one of the wires would break off so no crank, no fuel pump symptoms would occur. I replaced many of those in the field. Love your content by the way.

Northbound 95 off of 290. 2:45 in the morning. No moon. I stoped right in the center of the tarmac, washed of some dirt from the street, got back in. Freakin Lit-It-Up just like you did on the trip home. Best feeling in the world. Driving a 6-gen too.
