Barn Door Installation and Hardware questions answered

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Adding a barn door to your house can give it a cool rustic modern look... and I love them! But, while installing a barn door hardware kit on our current project, I had to figure out a few things, beyond what the instructions described, to make it turn out right. This video answers, what I think, are some of the common questions that anyone would run into while installing a barn door. In this case, we built the door with some Wormy Chestnut out of an old house and used a hardware kit by National Hardware. This hardware kit was purchased off the shelf at a Lowes store and was a 6 foot track, but can also be ordered online.

    I watched numerous videos before I found yours, and you addressed and thoroughly answered every question I had! You are doing a great job with your videos, I think I've watched them all! Very informative, thorough and a great attitude in general. Another quality that I appreciate hugely is the lack of profanity. Thank you, sir! Keep up the good work!

    Yea guys thanks for the video explaining the hardware. Even though the Lowes kit says indoor, I used it for outdoor on my pool hutch. I made the door from 2x4s and fence wood to match my existing fence board on board so the door is pretty heavy so I wont install the jump pucks. Also I used two kits to make for a 6ft beam. Alot of the parts in the kit I wont use such as the soft close and also I ordered seperately guides that attach to the wall not the ground since ground is n/a. But also yea thanks for revealing what the little plastic plugs are for.

    There are some guides available that mount to the door casing or to the base that I prefer to use instead of the plastic guides that mount to the floor like you used in this video. I will keep praying for Jaime, he's smart and resilient, I'm confident that he will be back doing what he loves and will figure out ways to work around the stubby fingers.

    Great video. I would add door height to the list. Most store bought doors will be too short as the barn door covers trim above the opening leaving an air gap at the bottom.

    Great video... the only time those get tricky is when it’s a double door they don’t provide a stop for the center I always have to fabricate one and I stared making that header piece the same height as the spacer the bolts run through and painting it the same color as the wall the homeowners seen to prefer that way or the interior decorators lol Love the videos keep it up, We’ll continue praying for Jamie hope to see him back on the job soon doing what he loves to do.

    I've had the same problem with the double doors and center stops. I hope that some day someone will market a double stop for the center. What I usually do is cut two stops off right behind the 1st set screw turn them so they stop the doors and then get the rollers mounted on the doors the right width.

    What about that outlet? Will whatever is plugged need to be unplugged everytime you want to open the door? And I have numerous barn door kits and that header is designed to do exactly what you thought, keep the door away from the wall. And gasp, here on the west coast not everyone trims around their closet doors so the trim isn't an impediment in hanging a barn door.

Would you also do extra cleaning after they have gone? I live in Australia and have heard some contractors are not that careful. Thanks

    Excellent video and knowing about the "safety puck" is helpful. I'm wondering if you can help me with a problem I have. I purchased a home with a sliding barn door in the master bath. Now the door seems to drag on the floor guides (routed groove type) and I'd like to fix that, but it doesn't appear that the door hardware allows for vertical adjustments. So, I was thinking of removing the door and sanding the bottom. Is this the only way to raise an installed barn door? Oh yeah, you could easily pass for a John Denver impersonator.

    I don’t personally like barn doors, I think they’re kinda tacky, but that said they really aren’t hard to mount, if you mount the track directly to the wall the hardware on the wheels that bolts through the door will hit the trim, if there’s no trim you can get away with it

    I’m not a fan of barn doors, I think it’s a fad. IMO, if you’re going to use them in a room, the rest of the room’s trim should also be, rough sawed, natural trim. Great tips for mounting one. 👍

    It's actually because the company is based in Europe and it matches their stud spacing. They converted the kit with different spacers for the US market but you need a header board. $0.20 piece of plastic vs a new piece of bar stock that needs to be drilled to different spacing.

  • @PerkinsBuilderBrothers

    @PerkinsBuilderBrothers

    4 жыл бұрын

    Very interesting… So the European equivalent is 20 inch spacing on studs?

  • @totallynottrademarked5279

    @totallynottrademarked5279

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@PerkinsBuilderBrothers That is what I ran into when I had one. I contacted the manufacturer. Now whether the industry came to the conclusion that a header was better than thicker spacers is probably just an assumption on my part. Typically it's ~23 on center in Europe. So framing around a door with double studs would bring it to 20" ish.
