Barbel Fishing - Small River Double (Video 175)

Спорт

You join me for what was forecast to be a wet evening but it was to stay dry albeit briefly windy and would produce a very well proportioned, double figure barbus which made the lengthy journey to this particular section of river well worth it!
Just to let you all know, my father caught Covid-19 whilst being treated in the elderly ward in hospital and is currently fighting for his life on maximum non invasive oxygen. He currently has a colostomy bag as is too weak to make it to the toilets in the ward. My thoughts are never minutes away from you dad and you're missed like you would not believe.

Thanks Adnrew it was a solid scrap. Well things have not been too good within the family unit here. My father has been in hospital now for 8 weeks, catching covid in the ward and fighting off pneumonia twice, at one point we were receiving phone calls every day to warn us he was not well and keep us updated which had us dreading the worst. he has recovered from the pneumonia but will now need some oxygen whereever he goes. Sadly the covid side has meant that his Lewy body dementia has rapidly gone down hill too and we have been unable to have a sensible chat to him over the phone, he thinks he is playing cricket or waiting at a train station. The hospital have said he may need to go into a care home for assesment. Myself, brother and mother are trying in our own ways to cope with the emotions that are running high, it is fair to say we are very much devastated .The hospital has sent us a letter confirming that he caught covid in the ward and that they are investigating. It turns out that down south 23% of people visiting hospitals for other ailments have caught Covid from said hospitals...

Lovely fish Mark. Well done. Spot on comment re confidence in the line. If you're not confident in the gear, or in your tactics etc, then you can't hope to fish well. As a kid, fishing with my dad, he kept it all simple, cast, and waited for the inevitable bite. Whereas I kept changing rigs, re-casting, swapping baits, etc. Guess who caught the better fish!

You'd like to think fellow anglers are a cut above, sadly there's idiots wherever you turn. Great that you're not sticking your head in the sand, if it persists get their car Reg or whatever & let the angling club take action. It's not as though there's a million of us river anglers fighting for swims, there's plenty of space for all. Keep it going Mark, you continue to be an inspiration for many of us.

Right, sucking up over, could you tell me your opinion of the Marco Cortesi centre pin? the reason I ask is because I'm bidding on one on ebay at the minute and I've tried a bit of research, but would rather have your opinion because you pull no punches! Thank you Mark for yet another excellent offering and what a fish that was! I want to try for chub over the winter and one method I want to try is baiting with a 'stringer' method using PVA string! We've just got back from a week in the beautiful and historic Lincoln City to celebrate 40 years of marriage and I was talking to an angler who was pulling out perch from the river Witham that runs through the city ! I thought of my lovely fishing gear sitting 220 miles away back home in Brighton, and suddenly felt homesick! Anyway, take care Mark, and I hope the family are O.K.! Best regards snerper!

Well said Stephen, they dislike me though because I see right through them for what they are, they want to portray one thing to others via their social media outlets and another face on the bank, suit themselves, their card is marked though.

Out of interest Mark, what sort of bird seed do you use whilst barbel fishing, and how is it prepared? I'm a Severn and Avon man, and want to utilise bird seed in my baiting approach.

Sorry for such a slow reply John, I am trying to catch up on questions and comments as things have not been brilliant within the family with my fathers hospitalisation. The brand of bird seed which I use is the Haiths Red Band. I'll give you a link to their preparation guide. www.haiths.com/haiths-baits/red-band-pigeon-conditioner-/

I wish the Loddon was as productive as other rivers too bigboi, sadly I have spent many of the years watching it reach this level of decline, me having one Swallow or two flying over my house and you with none doesn't mean I have wonderful summer if you understand my analogy mate. What i mean is many rivers are suffering mine included and a pale shadow of what they once were. What people don't see from the videos is the groundwork that goes in prior to trips. Last season at one point i did many consecutive blanks on one section, with otters galore and at times the smell of sewage, in fact the otter activity was that bad i even had them run up to my rucksack on some trips. So whilst it can look like the grass is truly greener on my patch I can assure you it really isn't always what it would appear and all of our rivers need help, especially those rivers where barbel were an indigenous species like the Loddon Kennet etc. The latter being a waterway whos stock helped other rivers where the species were not really native. See that is another thing people forget about the Wensum and that is that barbel were not a native species, with barbel stockings taking place in the 70s and 90s which were to become the famous large barbel that the river produced in later years. Predation, dredging, farming, poor fry recruitment, invasive species and pollution by water companies, along with over abstraction have led to the decline of many rivers sadly and many of our waterways are either holding on or sadly gone the way of the dinosaur and won't return to their old glory until many years of help is input to them and the root causes that damage them removed, I fear some may never find their way back to those special times.

@@francolinobasco sadly you're right about the decline of the rivers mate, I understand the amount of time and ground work needed to catch these beautiful golden whiskers. I've personally spent the best part of 3 years hunting these barbel on the wensum and failed but caught some cracking chub up to 8.7lb along the way so not all wasted time tho, when we both have some time free I'd like to go on a session with you on the wensum or your local river. all the best mate

Dont ask about his dad, the two anglers that kicked off on him or congratulations on the catch, just about you.

Danny they are a couple a male and a female angler, they are both trouble, he is a bit of a thug in my and other anglers opinions despite what he tries to portray on social media. So on that recent trip I saw them and tried to ask them what their problem was as she had mouthed off something as they walked passed me, which had been done at range and assuming I couldn't hear or that if i did I wouldnt approach them over it. They were wrong I walked up to them and asked what his problem was and he replied in an intended threatening manner "look you just don't know me and I don't know you got it?" I have no time for people like them .

Mark has enough going on, I really don't think the giveaway is much of a priority right now. If you feel the need to ask then you're really just s selfish parasite.
