Today I'm taking you away from the tourist areas of Khaosan Road and Sukhumvit to The Old Town area of Wang Burapha, or more specifically Pak Khlong Talad (The Flower Market)
As the name suggests The Bangkok Flower Market is famous for flowers but we're not searching for roses, we're heading for a giant chicken pad kaprao at a 48 year old shophouse restaurant called Seo Lang
I had a MASSIVE pad kaprao with chicken, gai gratiam (chicken with garlic) a fried egg and a water for 120 baht!
I write tapioca flour in the video when uncle in fact said Arrowroot powder!
Directions to Seo Lang:
maps.app.goo.gl/MRrigdDAfAe5U...
THIS IS REAL BANGKOK STREET FOOD!
About the Market:
The Bangkok Flower Market, known locally as Pak Khlong Talat, is the largest wholesale and retail fresh flower market in Bangkok, Thailand. Here’s an overview of what makes it a fascinating destination:
Location
Pak Khlong Talat is situated near the Chao Phraya River, close to the Memorial Bridge (Saphan Phut) and not far from the city's famous landmarks such as the Grand Palace and Wat Pho.
History
The market's origins date back to the early 18th century during the reign of King Rama I, when it was initially a floating market. Over time, it evolved from being a fish market to a produce market, and eventually to a flower market in the mid-20th century.
Offerings:
Orchids: A Thai specialty, available in many vibrant colours and varieties.
Roses: In numerous shades, often used for garlands and offerings.
Lotus: Commonly used in religious ceremonies.
Jasmine: Frequently used for garlands.
Marigolds: Popular for ceremonial use.
In addition to fresh flowers, Pak Khlong Talat also offers floral arrangements, garlands, and flower-related accessories. You can find everything from single stems to elaborate bouquets.
Atmosphere
The market operates 24 hours a day, though it's most active late at night and early in the morning, when wholesalers and retailers stock up. The atmosphere is lively and bustling, filled with the scents of fresh flowers and the vibrant colors of countless blooms.
Cultural Significance
Pak Khlong Talat plays an important role in Thai culture, as flowers are deeply integrated into daily life and religious practices. Thais buy flowers for home decoration, religious offerings, and special occasions like weddings and festivals.
Visiting Tips
Best Time to Visit: Early morning or late at night for the full experience and to see the market at its busiest.
Accessibility: The market is accessible by taxi, tuk-tuk, MRT from Sanam Chai or river ferry. It's also a short walk from the Memorial Bridge (Saphan Phut) and nearby attractions.
Shopping: Prices are generally affordable, but it’s customary to negotiate, especially for larger purchases.
Conclusion
The Bangkok Flower Market is a vibrant and essential part of Bangkok’s cultural and commercial landscape. It offers a unique glimpse into the local way of life and the importance of flowers in Thai society. Whether you're a flower enthusiast or a curious traveler, a visit to Pak Khlong Talat is a sensory delight and a memorable experience.

My name’s Gary and I’ve been living in Bangkok for the past five plus years and travelling Thailand for over ten. I’m obsessed with Thai street food and it’s that obsession that led me to start this KZread channel. I want to share my favourite hidden spots in Bangkok and the rest of Thailand so you can fall in love with authentic, local Thai food as much as I have!
If you love seeing off the beaten path, non-touristy, local life and authentic local life in Bangkok and Thailand then this is the channel for you. If go go bars on the Sukhumvit Road are more your thing (I’m not judging) then maybe not!

My husband would eat the garlic chicken there every day. That looks amazing! Thank you Gary. I think you've done a video similar, but I have a request. Can you show us your favorite mainstays (pad ka prow, pad thai, moo krob, etc) that you would pay ANY price to eat. The ones that are, to you, the best ever. The true #1 of each. But with your twist. They're the best to YOU, not just the best you think a visiting farang would like. Love you lots!

Before I sadly had to leave BKK last week I found Pad Krapao Moo for 25B (w/egg, 20 w/out) just around the corner from the Bamikiao Guangdong noodle gentleman. The PK can be found on Soi Charoen Krung 85, in the evening. Already prepared - they were just dishing it out, so I guess it's only available for short intervals ... but still

In terms of value, I get a pad kaprao from the Thammasat University night market for 20 baht, but the whole university has pretty solid eats for that price for obvious reasons. Outside of the University, this might be the best value and best looking pad kaprao I've seen. Will have to try it out when I'm back in the area.

You know what, I think you should keep looking for the best tasting dishes rather than the cheapest. Pad kapro dishes range from about 50 to 100, not counting upmarket restaurants. The difference in prices is inconsequential for most visitors. Only local workers looking to save money would want to find the cheapest eats.

That reminds me of back in the day in NYC. I used to hand truck stuff to places in the Garment Center in Manhattan, and inside the service/delivery entrance there was a place that cooked and served hefty, hearty dishes for the workers and the truck drivers for a dollar apiece. I tried it several times and it was better than a lot of dishes that you might get in a three or four star restaurant; most of the food had a Latin flavor, with fresh meats and veggies, rice on the side, all packed into bowls or containers at least as big as what you saw there in the market. I would love to know when he adds that tapioca flour and how much, since I'm not a big fan of chicken breast in any type of cuisine. This weekend I'm once again making Beef Rendang, with my homemade chili paste that I've had getting the flavors together since I last made this dish. I think I'll add some tapioca flour to my Amazon order tonight, if I can figure out when and how to use it.
