Band Teacher Reacts to Dirty Loops Thriller

Band Teacher Reacts to Thriller by Dirty Loops and Cory Wong. I hope that you find value in my reaction and analysis of this amazing cover of a Halloween favorite, Michael Jackson’s Thriller. Dirty Loops are longtime friends and music school classmates Jonah Nilsson (vocals/keyboards), Henrik Linder (bass), and Aron Mellergardh (drums) who hail from Stockholm, Sweden.

One thing to add to your analysis: the music and the movie were both recorded in 2 different places. Dirty loops on the right hand side in Sweden, Cory Wong and the horns in the US. The lights in the back are a gimmick to suggest a single shot, but they actually never saw each other during this song.

Sometime when you're looking for another great artist to respond to I would suggest Jacob Collier's version of Lionel Richie's "All Night Long." He and Jonah are pals, have collaborated and are both managed by Quincy Jones. If you're not familiar with Jacob you have yet another artist-albeit-on a wonderfully different path to discover. In the afore mentioned video Jacob did all the arranging, scored the orchestra, among other things does a killer piano solo and completely produced the amazing video by himself. Oh yeah and he won a Grammy for his efforts. There are some cool horns in this one too.

Hahaha, you've just been Loopified, I think. Welcome down the Dirty Loops rabbit hole. Lots more of this kind of awesome craziness down there. :D Check out "Work Shit Out", if you want to see more of the madness Aron can churn out, and Jonah has a magnificent keyboard solo in that one too. For absolutely ridiculous arrangement skills, go for "Next To You". Or maybe "Follow the Light" (also with Cory Wong) or "World on Fire" for insane bass solos. In "Breakdown" Jonah will kill you with the smoothness of his voice. And then there's all the older stuff, like covers from some ten years ago, and the album Loopified, that was released in 2014 (only "Hit Me" and "Wake Me Up" can be found as a videos on their channel from that album though). Really, with DL you can't go wrong. They haven't released a single bad song so far. They're crazy good.

Also, there's a really interesting interview with Henrik Linder at the bassmagazine site, where they talk about the processes of writing and arranging the songs on the Phoenix EP (go there, search for Henrik Linder Songified, and it should pop right up; I don't seem to be able to post links here). Highly recommended. Another good interview to get some insight into how they work can be found in Cory Wong's podcast episode with Henrik Linder, where they talk about the collab album Turbo, which Thriller is from. The podcast is called Wong Notes.

I can tell you this.... I am so completely on board this board this musical freight train. I first heard them about a month ago, and I just can't get enough of Dirty Loops! As for Aaron (drums), he has turned this 72 year old, frustrated, wood chopper into a genuine fanboy. Here is the real kicker for you... this is 2 videos, filmed on different continents, and then seamlessly edited as 1. The woodwind, horns, and Cory were filmed in Wisconsin I believe, and Dirty Loops were in Sweden. Definitely do more of Dirty Loops. I promise you won't be disappointed.

Thanks a lot for your interesting reviuw! If you are new to DL, you do have some serious stuff waiting... (Another song together with Cory is "Turbo") DL have done a lot of covers from Brittney S, Justin B and others. But here are some of my DL favs with short comments: Work Shit Out = A musical statement by DL. Next to You = When you think like "Ok, now I know this song" (you dont) Also: "Okey guys, now lets go to church waaay down in Alabama..." Coffee Break is over = Well... keyboard flying, keyboard almost falling, keyboard as a drumsection... they go bananas. DL also does some side projects: Coffee Break = Jonah together with Richard Bona and an amazing Swedish horn section. Bitten by the Kitten = Check out those crazy frets on Henriks Mattesson base.(and some fast triplets..) There is also some vibes from I"m a Man" by The Spencer Davies Group. The awsome drum sound, like the snare, is tuned by Urban Näsvall and mixed by Simon Petre'n. Jonah, Henrik and Aron met as students at the Music High School in Stockholm. Looking forward to your next reaction video on DL!

Loved your reaction. Hearing this from a horn players perspective gave me some great new insights, your joyful energy was also a treat. Just a little FYI all the horns and the guitarist (Wong) on left side of video actually played their parts in Minneapolis while Dirty Loops on the right recorded in Sweden making-to me at least-their tightness and communications almost magical. I believe the background was a green screen as the lights were originally used by Dirty Loops in their "Rock You" video. You are safe reacting to any and all Loops songs as there simply are no bad ones...seriously. Even their merch video is a blast. Great job. Thanks.

  • @lottawiklund8606

No green screen. They actually set up the Minneapolis studio to match the one in Stockholm. Cory talks a bit about how he and Aron worked out all the details in the beginning of his podcast episode (Wong Notes) where he has Henrik Linder as guest. Really interesting episode. You can see how Henrik's shadow is cut off, where the videos are stitched together in the middle. Another fun fact is that Aron is the one who does basically all the video editing for DL.

That's how they became famous. They took hits and "Dirty Looped" them. Now, you have Quincy jones at the helm and he knows what to do with them. David Foster was way out of his lane when they came out, but they took 2 years off, disbanded and got resigned with Quincy Jones and they are about to go "fool". I met this guys in Dallas, TX at the Kessler and they were the nicest to me and my daughters. Quincy was known for his horn sections, and you can hear it. I met them in 2014. That's awesome you stumbled across Dirty Loops. They are a super great band, and you should check out some of their other stuff where Jonah (vocals) solos on keys--he's just as good on keys as is his voice. But there's a whole world of "internet/KZread musicians" (I hate that judgey term...) out there, and other musicians/bands you need to look at with the same level of talent are: Snarky Puppy (go for a First Reaction to their song Lingus--not hard to find, as it has like 25M views) Jacob Collier (probably the finest musical genius currently on earth, and both he and Dirty Loops are managed by Quincy Jones management). Dirty Loops got famous from doing fusion covers of pop songs. Other groups that do that who are awesome that do awesome, fresh arrangements of covers are FLR Project and The Bottom 40, and a student project band with that idea from a little while back is 5th Flo--definitely worth checking out their arrangements, and the players are at the top in all these groups. Cheers!
