Hi Bob! Saiki the lead singer has had throat surgery in the past so the band are very careful with her voice. They play 2+ hour shows so to give Saiki a break around mid-set they do three things. 1. Play an instrumental, 2. Miku (rhythm guitar) takes lead vocals for a song or two (she has a track usually once per album where she is lead vocalist) and 3. Miku will do her legendary and hilarious "Magic Time" MC set. Then Saiki comes back on to finish the set. So yeah, they have a number of really cool instrumental tracks. Check out the live MV of "Onset" for another instrumental banger!

Thanks for checking this out. They have published four instrumentals, all of which are insanely technical but euphonic. They use them in their live shows to give Saiki a brief rest from singing. As great as they always are, it is in the instrumentals that you see what they can really do. They are more than a rock band--they can stand with the great fusion bands of the 70's and 80's.

Let me tell you Bob, it's even better live and in person, because the sound is so raw and without the smoothness that comes from a produced video. I've seen them play it twice live and it's pretty much indescribable. Kanami is on a completely different level than anyone else, both in composition and in playing. There are other very impressive guitarists such as Li-sa-X, Hazuki from Nemophila and Mami from SCANDAL, among a whole host of others (there must be something in the water in Japan), but Kanami is just special on a Mozart-like level, similar to Brian Wilson's in his long and storied career. And the fact that the band came together not really knowing each other, but being able to coordinate and harness their talents into something very special. It's just Kismet. Miku had a dream and the drive to push everything forward and the addition of Kanami turned out to be possibly the best recruitment in modern musical history. This led to Misa, Akane and Saiki joining the cast and we are now seeing the fruits of their labor. And let's not forget Miku's amazing job in becoming an extremely proficient rhythm guitarist who adds her own flair to things. They are just magical. But the thing that sets them apart from every other band or group is their love affair with their fans, and it shows in so many ways. it's a very tangible thing and very endearing. They have resurrected rock in a way that a lot of us veteran rockers in our golden years never thought could happen. Japan, and Band Maid in particular, has become the keepers of the flame for rock.

When I first listened to Band Maid, I thought they were good, but as time has passed, they have always improved to where I think in their genre they are at the top. Kanami is, as others have stated, probably a very underrated guitarist. (She always gets props from me for playing PRS). Miku has learned to play rhythm quite well, and in other songs her harmony vocals have also improved. This song really emphasizes Kanami's skills, as well as the a nice solo part for Misa. It's nice sometimes to just have an instrumental to better appreciate the playing skills, and everyone gets their opportunity in this one, which is already in my car playlist!

I come from, and probably quite a few more in my age group, who remember when a band did an instrumental to begin the show and sometimes at various times during a gig. I vividly remember Joey Dee and the Starliters doing them at every show. The Young Rascals, who pretty much evolved from from Joey Dee, were the same way. I went to see them in Hoboken and Jersey City at the time before they became the huge artists they did. Even at the soul music shows, you had Junior Walker and the All-Stars as one of the attractions, but they also acted as the back-up band for the other acts. Same with the Isley Brothers and the big shows at the Brooklyn Fox and Brooklyn Paramount on Flatbush Avenue. Then came the kings of instrumentals, The Ventures, The Tornados, The Surfaris, The Rip Chords and The Shadows, who were hugely popular during the 1960's. There has always been a market for instrumentals, and no one today does it better than Band Maid. It's a genius move.

I believe so did many of American audience in their recent three US tours. This song has been normally played in the middle of the setlist to give Saiki, lead vocalist, some break. They played this song, however, as opening at festivals and in Guns N' Roses concert in Japan as support to the legendary band. Yeah! they showed off their skills and talents to the audience who knew nothing about the girls in maid outfit on the stage. I felt as if I heard them screaming "Hey guys! Great reaction Bob. They have control of balance throughout their musical horizon and the ability to mutate notes into emotions and vice versa. I want to point out that Akane throws them up and down with the different drum patterns. Spectacular demonstration of control where there is no apparent control. They have the music in their fist. For your information, a couple of weeks ago they released a new song 'Shambles' and they are already performing it live with an incredible vocal control from Saiki who even uses 'melismas' or 'vocal runs' as she did in Sacramento, California, leaving in shock to the audience.

Thanks, Bob. I agree, the way FNO plays out doesn't always match expectations, but that's its strength. Kanami (and Band-Maid as a whole) has a way of building tension over the course of a song. They do it all kinds of ways: harmonics, verse changes, interesting bridges, rhythms, dynamics, changes in tonal direction, etc. And most of the time it's a whole bunch of these things all together.

Thx for the wonderful reaction and analysis. I really adore this song, even after the probably over 100 times I've listened to it. Kanami writes instrumentals as coherent songs (not just jam sessions giving members the chance to show off), and I think this adds to their replayability for me (I react to their instrumentals with "wow, so beautiful," not just "wow, so impressive"). Band-Maid puts out white room instrumentals for just about all their songs, and these are as much fun - and in some odd cases for me even more fun ("Giovanni") - than hearing the song with vocals.

Anyway, I just wanted to say that when you said "They are listening to each other" you reminded my of one of my band directors who advised that we need to watch for his direction, but also, we need to listen to each other to be the best we can. He was also a session drummer for a record studio, but his passion was teaching. When you made the comment about the amount of time practice and 'listening to each other' you reminded me of him. Serious musicians and magnificent composers. I’m hoping you (or anyone) can help me nail down what inspired Kanami’s melodic choices starting @ 0:54? I’m betting my life it’s lifted from a classical piece. I just can’t recall which one. Their other instrumentals are equally good and each one unique. “Onset” is where Kanami uses her tapping as vocals. “Without Holding Back” is less complex and relies on a single motif. I could never be more proud and impressed with Miku's level of guitar playing skill, as she initially used the guitar as a simple prop for effect. But since then she has really learned a lot from Kanami as her (SENSEI) teacher, and what a blessing to have your lead guitarist in your band being your personal teacher. I look forward to the day when we see MIKU doing some impressive lead solo parts. It would not surprise me that we all see that in the next few years. She should win awards for most improved musician who learned to play due to necessity only after she found all the other musicians and formed BANDMAID, considered by many as the best Hard Rock band on earth today. I am as proud of them as I am with Lovebites who came out of the starting gate at full gallop and has blown everybody in the metal world right out of the water. Go all you Japanese all girl bands, as we need a few more of YOU coming up on the international music scene. The western world has been corrupted by highly vulgar Rap and Hip-Hop and sexualized Pop music and this has allowed the Japanese to take over and dominate, which is Bandmaids mantra. TAKE OVER THE WORLD.!!!! Check out an amazing Japanese band called YOUSEI TEIKOKU ( which means,THE FAIRY KINGDOM)with a bizarre genre called GOTHIC VAMPIRE METAL OPERA,with Astral Dogma to blow your minds.

Just the other day I spoke to you in the comments about Lovebites being one of our times best Metal bands. For me Bandmaid is one of the best hardrock/ rock bands. Right now they are touring US. And the Americans seems crazy about them. Every live show is unique with them. With a lot of fun too No need to say they are very skilled musicians too. Not as technical as Lovebites but awsome musicality here too. Also great that they bless us with awsome instrumental songs besides their also vocal songs. To few rock bands today's does instrumentals in my mind at least... Its also a way in their live sets to give some rest for their front vocal woman. Who in the past have had voice problems. So its both a wize thing and great cause it gives more time for the musicians to shine and them to leave place for great instrumental pieces. Everyone in this band are awsome. They are just as Lovebites very easy to love each of them. Cause they are all down to earth humble. And very fun and easy going. Something that really shows in their live sets. Really like ure reactions and youre chanel. Once again love from Stockholm Sweden/ J

I have to disagree on your statement of Lovebites being more technical. Now true, Bandmaid doesn't have 2 top tier main guitarist. But Kanami is just as capable and in some cases more capable than M&M due to the fact she has to handle the entire load.

@@yolandria No need to say their both great bands. But if we only talk technical skill Haruna and Fami and the guitarists in Loverbites have an insane skill compared. And also Lovebites singer is a ballerina and one of the guitarists is also a trained concerto classical pianist. With that said, skill and technical knowledge isn't offcourse everything . And yes they are both among BattleBeast, Unleash the Archers, and Nightwish my 5 favorite bands in the world. Never would I've thought that all of them would be female fronted or all female bands. But its a fact. And as I said, Lovebites and Bandmaid aren't in the same genre for me. One is metal and the other hardrock. And I love them both just as much. All the best / J

@@jonnyberggren4598 Even though they play in diff genre's I would have to say in recent years Bandmaid's musical complexity has grown leaps and bounds. Just look at "The Unseen World" album and holy crap Kanami goes crazy on several tracks. Which is a huge step forward. And as far as the other girls...MISA and Akane are probably the best duo in their respective fields. Which btw they met in music college. So their education on theory etc is up to par. Now as far as singing styles go. Both girls are unique in their own way. Asami has her Operatic (power metal) stylings while Saiki can deliver very rapid machine gun style words and phrases almost at rap speeds. But if I were to put my money down on the table...Bandmaid puts on a better show. And I am all about the show. Hell one time I almost walked out on "Bullet For My Valentine" It was so boring...I could have stayed home and put on a CD and got the same experience.

While on tour this year, Band-Maid has played 'From Now On' on nearly every full-set concert, only omitting it on short festival sets, with the exception of Lollapalooza where they opened with it. The Maids played an hour long set at Lollapalooza and they were at the top of their game: they know their parts so well that they joke around and goof on each other mid song. They've made a short medley of 'Dice' and 'Hate?' with an epic Misa/Kanami Bass/Guitar duel that goes all over the stage during 'Hate?'. In the midst of this Akane is at full song never missing a beat. See if you can react to one of the live 'Hate?' performances from the August 2023 US tour. You might see Saiki 'watering' Akane during the duel!

That was one big, happy smile you had when the playing started! The quiet electronic intros that Kanami has been adding to her compositions over the last couple of years usually, from my experience, presage an explosion of sound! I'd imagine that this relative quiet that precedes the storm is a technique to emphasise what follows and make it even more visceral and startling. Whatever, it certainly works! Their latest release, SHAMBLES, uses an extremely hard, solid riff as an intro but it is muted to emphasise the Hard Rock sound that follows. This is one of the few instrumentals of theirs, though they have done instrumental versions of a number of their songs too. There are various fancams of them performing From Now On live which are worth taking a look at as seeing them do this live is an experience too, as apart from being note perfect you can really see the complexity of their playing in their faces - this is tiring stuff, taking a lot of concentration and, no doubt, a lot of hard practice work. Best fancam I've found is from Ohrenje-san, who concentrates on Kanami-sama's playing in close-up - kzread.info/dash/bejne/kaRr26iHd9fbfLQ.html

I'm going to suggest East of Eden "Evolve" they are a new group from Japan (it would be fair to call them a Super Group), they have only released 1 song, but if the rest are going to be like this we are in for a treat. Guitar: Yuki from D Drive; Bass: Wakazaemon, who's been Marty Friedman's bassist and will be playing live with Koiai (Li-sa-X, Hazuki (Nemophila), Senri Kawaguchi); Drums: Mizuki, from Lonesome Blue (a band somewhat related to Lovebites and Nemophila); Vocals: Minato Akane, from J Pop group Predia, also was singer in Mochi to Cheese (w Akane and Kanami of Band Maid); Violinist and Creator: Ayasa, known for the song "Kokuhaku No Yoru" also a member of Morfonica, a Bang Dream unit. Mao of Lightbringer has partial composition credits on the song (Mao kind of gets around, he has composed songs for Lightbringer, Lovebites, Lonesome_Blue and now East of Eden). 2 reviews from Lalapalooza - CHICAGO SUN-TIMES The Japanese rock act is the quintessential example of not judging a book (or a band) by its cover. Inspired by everyone from Carlos Santana to Deep Purple and Smashing Pumpkins, but looking like demure movie characters, Band-Maid is a total exploration of contrast, and about as shock rock as you can be nowadays - not for the blood and gore of, say, GWAR, but for the immediate hypnosis they impart. - Selena Fragassi ROLLING STONE Japanese Rockers Band-Maid Put Guitar Center Showoffs to Shame There’s a pun to be made about how much Band-Maid ripped, but the Japanese group goes even harder than that. Fluctuating between hard rock, aughts nu-metal, and pop rock, each member of the quintet is a virtuoso in her own right with more than a decade of practice in Band-Maid alone. They lured curious onlookers into the fold when highlights like “Domination” and “Don’t You Tell Me” got huge reactions from the crowd, but it was the bass solo-versus-guitar solo duels mid-song that got the biggest cheers. This is what those guys in Guitar Center think their ridiculous riffing sounds like. Turns out it’s done best, and most effortlessly, by women in black-and-white maid dresses and frilly hair-pieces as they smile ear to ear. -N.C.
