'Secret My Lips' is still my favorite BAND-MAID song, so I was very happy when they released 'Secret Maiko Lips'. - Miku's shodō (calligraphy) at the beginning was "World Domination". - Members BAND-MAIKO names: Miku = 鳩子 Hatoko. Saiki = 富士姫 Fujiki. Kanami = 叶笑 Kanoemi. Misa = 梅美沙 Umemisa. Akane = 紅月 Akatsuki. "Hatoko" redid the lyrics for this song to use Kansai, the traditional dialect used in the old Capital of Kyoto that is identified with Geisha culture. They followed this up the next year with a new BAND-MAIKO song, 'Gion-cho', and a mini-album of BAND-MAIKO versions of BAND-MAID songs. They've performed 'Secret Maiko Lips' live in Kyoto a couple of times. The second time it was part of a four song mini BAND-MAIKO set within a set. No kimonos though. Akane has said they make playing the drums really difficult. And there's some behind the scenes footage where Kanami drops a pick while wearing a kimono, and is unable to pick it back up. Fortunately, someone is there to hand it to her. : )

It was indeed an April fools thing, then it ended up being popular so it kinda became a trend for april 1st to release a song under Band-Maiko

This was a April Fools Day joke originally. It ended up as a 5-7 song EP album that featured one new song, Gion-cho, and reworked versions of other B-M songs like 'Alone' , YOLO' and 'Secret My Lips' (IIRC).

Yup it is a Band-Maid song that was re-recorded with new lyrics (in the Kyoto dialect), and with the sounds of traditional Japanese instruments woven into the mix by Kanami on her computer. Check out their song Gion-Cho for one that was specifically written for Band-Maiko.

What Miku wrote at first was “SEKAI SEIFUKU “ means “conquer the world” Their goal is to conquer the world My recommendation to you is “YOLO” you only live once

Simply put, maiko is young geisha. She sings in Kyoto dialect

Next up, Gion-cho, (gee-ohn, with a hard “g”)which is even better. (Gion-chon is the district of geisha houses in Kyoto where one is likely to see maiko [apprentice geisha].) The lyrics in Gion-cho are evocative and, again, in that funky Kyoto (k’yo-to) dialect. The art direction (kimono, makeup, hair, sets) in both videos is exquisite.

Yes, it is an April Fool's thing. As to doing it more Akane said playing the drums was difficult wearing the costume. Notice that they are not moving as much as normal. Also Miku is wearing her red flower and Saiki is wearing her blue one. Akane eating first is an inside joke, She is the "chow hound" in the group and is known to eat everyone's leftovers. In an interview she talks about eating an insane number of bowls of noodles in one sitting. Last I love MISA's howl. You guys ever going to checkout Aldious? I want to see Alan's reaction to who I call the "Pink Lady".

With Wagakki band, the mix of instruments is the whole point. This was just a lark for Band-Maid. And Alan, they are heavily jazz influenced, you especially hear it in their drum and bass lines in a lot of their live songs.

There is a normal Band Maid version of this song but I vastly prefer this one, I can see why Alan thinks the traditional instruments don't mix as well as a Waggaki song because of this literally being a Band Maid song that they later added those instruments into where as Waggaki's songs were written with those in mind. "Gion-cho" and "Tora and Tora" are 2 other Band Maiko songs I really enjoy.

The song "Gion-cho" should be a better song, in case of the song was composed for traditional instruments. This song was actually a full song before (secret My lips), then they add traditional instruments in to make a April fool version of the song. Let try Gion-cho guys.

The instrument that MISA is playing is called a Shamisen. If you're interested, there's a band called The Yoshida Brothers, two guys that play some very cool rock music crossed with shamisen. Rising is a great instrumental.

I love both versions of the song. But if you want a just Band-Maiko, check out Gion-cho. It also has subtitles if you turn on the CC!

It's pronounce (My-Co) So, 'Secret My Lips' becomes 'Secret Maiko Lips', or 'Secret (My-Co) Lips'. It's a play on words. Now you have to do the other BAND-MAIKO song, "Gion Cho'. And what's is the obsession with hydration? It seems like no KZreadrs can drink in between videos. Like they can't go five minutes without drinking something.

That was an April's Fool joke. Even the lyrics was changed to an old dialect... I prefer the original, but it's cool, since it's a kind of joke that it's rare to see other bands do the same xD

IIRC both MISA and Akane have played jazz from time to time, and Kanami appears to be a walking encyclopedia of music genres so it's probably not surprising that they sneak a little of the devil's music in from time to time. Check out the Maiko song Gion-cho, which makes a better job of marrying the traditional and modern elements in a less tongue-in-cheek manner. In fact it's a very beautiful song and I've suddenly discovered a need to watch the video right now!

For those who might not be aware the the banner at the beginning says "World Domination" You are not off in thinking the Traditional instruments were added in later as this was a preexisting song they altered for Band Maiko (April fools joke) The original "Secret my Lips" is bad ass and my personal favorite. You should for sure check it out. 🎶🎸🥁🎸🎶🔥🙂

This is an adaptation of an existing song. The one they did the year after, Gion-cho (also on their official channel) was written purely for Band-Maiko. The original of Secret My Lips is also worth checking out. The version on the official channel looks to be the studio version over live footage, but I'm sure "somebody" could point you to where you can see the great Studio Coast live version, if you wanted to see that.

For this, the maids go by their Maiko names, yes, they had other alternate names for this little April joke, and they used diifferent dialect for the songs too, Finally you did this, I wonder if you go for the second one,

@@dicodec in 2020 we didn't get any Maiko, maybe because of the virus or they didn't plan to do so, since they did have to make early reservation for the Kimono, location shoot, rewrite the songs and they did plan a lot of road show after their Valentine's day show, there is plenty reasons to why this year the Maiko didn't show up,

This is a joke published on April 1, 2018 in April Fool's Day. At the same time, the official website was renamed to Band Maiko. They revealed that it was a joke that night and returned to Band-Maid. Traditional Japanese musical instruments "Shamisen", "Koto" and "Wadaiko" have been added and are sung in the dialect of Kyoto. Kimono has the special characteristics of Maiko. On April 1, 2019, the band Maiko's original "Gioncho" was released and a mini album was released. It was expected on April 1st of this year, but no new song was released. It's their present of a very well made April Fool's Day. They value their fans.

Best April Fools ever performed by any rock band ever!

It might be mostly coz you’re looking at it after having heard Wagakki band. For them, this traditional folk-rock fusion is their signature sound while with BM this is just a side thing they started as a joke so the level of mastery with the traditional instruments would undoubtedly be quite significant. I personally find this quite refreshing and considering what it is, they did put in quite the effort. This adventurous persona they have as a band that is willing to experiment and have fun while also putting in genuine effort in the process, is one of the main reasons why I love them. Its great for their continuous growth and longevity as artists. Would be great if they pull off a new theme for their next joke. As musicians, they honestly give me the impression of a bunch of eccentric, restless brats that are just too curious about everything to simply sit still 🤣 and as weird as that may sound, its the most promising and interesting image I’ve seen in a music artist in a long while esp. for a group of ladies.

In 2019 and 2020 on March 31rst (think April fools) they came out with a song dressed as Geishas.

Fun Fact: they also change the lyrics to Kansai dialect. Unnoticeable to those who don't speak Japanese / familiar with the culture, but that's such a nice touch and attention to details, since Maiko is a huge cultural thing in Kyoto (which use Kansai dialect).

I love their collective "WHAT?!?" look to camera wben they're eating. 😂

It was quite an elaborate joke. Band-Maid announced their disbandment and change to band-Maiko over social media, changed all their individual social media accounts as well, then released this MV. Many fans took it seriously. Band-Maiko are Hatoko (Gt/Vo) Fujiki (Vo) Kanoemi (Gt) Akatsuki (Dr) and Umemisa (Ba). So I have no idea which girls you are referring to in this video. But yeah at least for your own sake, please check out Sectet My Lips to see the original version of this cover. There is only 1 original Band-Maiko song so far - Gion Cho. Band-Maiko broke many hearts in 2020 because of COVID-19. Many fans stayed awake past midnight on 31 March waiting for a new Band-Maiko MV That never came.

Wagaki Band is what they do and make them special. Band-Maid didn't force anything. I was as an April's fool joke as an alter-ego band, but also with a tribute to Kyoto's ancestral culture. The lyrics of the original Secret My Lips, were written by Miku in the Kyoto's dialect to make: "Secret Maiko Lips". Of course, we western people don't get it 'cause we don't know the language, but it's a nice touch besides the April's fool thing. Good for Band Maid.

The instruments in the background are just there to bring out a traditional side of the story being told!

I like it ,traditional Japanese dress seems really cool , they should keep that look

Band-Maiko seems to have been underrated so far. There are a lot to be talked about. One thing is Kanami’s musical ability and flexibility which is, probably, insane. The “wagakki (Japanese traditional instruments)” parts were composed by her, and it was produced by her with her DTM (Desktop Music=PC music) system, and then, it was mixed and recorded, while she was closely working with the Band’s rec/mix chief engineer. Check out “Gion-cho” by Band-Maiko where all most all, except rec and mix, was done by Kanami and the Band.

Name one other band that loves their fans so much, that they are doing an effort like this as an april fool... Changing the style, naming all social media Band-Maiko, producing an whole musicvideo (in the first place), after that it blews up and they are making an album... There is no one like Band Maid. They love the fans and we love them, it´s that simple. Combined with that much talent and a humble character, it´s stellar!

You don't have to like everything .. regardless this was a welcome prank for us fans ... Thanks for the reaction.

It appears no one has commented including the video hosts about the meaning of the term Maliko. A is a Geisha in training. So what do you guys think the visuals portray ? Alan and Eric perhaps listen again particularly (Eric ?) who at the time this video was made, did not show a well developed understanding of Japanese music.

The lyrics of the song have a different sound and color than the original song, in my opinion great, since they rewrote the lyrics in the Kyoto dialect, which is the one used by the Maiko and Geishas, ​​greetings.

Yes. This was an April fools joke. Well played Bando-Maiko (Band-Maid). Cool reaction. I do the opposite. The first time I listen to a song a just go for pure enjoyment. Second time on I start to listen for different sounds I missed before and then I start to analyze. Best songs are the ones that get better with each listening including because something new is found. Wagakki Band reminds me of the soundtrack by Masuda Toshio for Naruto (first series). A mix of rock and traditional Japanese instruments. One of my favorite soundtracks along with music for opening and closing titles brought Japanese J-Pop and J-Metal into my playlists.

They must play the traditional instruments separately and mix them in, which may compromise thei4 usual freshness. I have noticed jazz phrasing in Band Maid before, especially from Misa and Akane. They are Japanese - less musical prejudices than in the West

WagakkiBand does this style for their whole career and are amazing. Band-Maid did this as an April fools joke, and came out with a whole album. Yes, WagakkiBand does it better, they've done it longer and is their focus. For what this was, I think it was amazing, and also check out Gion-cho by "Band-Maiko". At the same time, I don't think WagakkiBand would sound as good playing by Band-Maid rules. Also, "mah-ee-koh".

Stop me if you heard this already: This vid was released for April Fool's Day 2018. It's a "cover" of their rival band, Band-Maid. Pretty elaborate prep, including translating the Japanese lyrics of "Secret My Lips" over to Kyoto dialect. Us old timer Maidiacs wondered how they were going to outdo themselves in 2019 - for April Fool's Day 2019, they released a 7-song CD with a bunch of cool, beaufifully recorded "covers" and the original song someone mentions below, "Gion Cho" Like me, you guys are too far gone down the B-M rabbit hole to NOT dig this one.

I mean, you're right yet I still disagree with you? I don't agree with saying the traditional instrumentation was "thrown on there." I think they're fairly well implemented. However, boiled down to the very essence of things, that is what happened. They had a song, "Secret My Lips," which they then changed up to add traditional instruments and changed the lyrics to a very old Kyoto (the area of Japan most associated with Geisha, and therefore Maiko, culture) when they decided to do this April Fool's gag. They have another BAND MAIKO video, "Gion Cho," which is probably my favorite of the two. This kinda sorta became a band tradition, with them putting out Band Maiko videos on April's Fool 2018 and 2019. None this year for, I imagine, obvious reasons. When the 2019 video came out, the also released an EP of Band Maiko songs. I love this, it's such a great, hella-fun marketing idea.

This is a remake of a BAND MAID song SECRET MY LIPS but sung in a different language so in other words it's translated so perhaps you sensed that try GION CHO it's a BAND MAIKO song only there is no BAND MAID version no translation.

Wagakki band is completely different. Band-maiko is still extremely hard rocking maikos! Wagakki band is more focused on, wagakki. Band-maiko is hard rock.

This is not the best Band-Maiko track. Gion-cho is better.

You heard the translator right..its not english right?? You should try to learn first...its not good right?? For your own disgration.

IMO 'Gion-Cho' is better Band -Maiko song than this.
