On March 31, 2018, the band released a video under the pseudonym Band-Maiko entitled Secret Maiko Lips. In this, the musicians appear dressed in classic geisha robes and play a new version of the title Secret My Lips, which was originally published on the album Just Bring It. Classical Japanese instruments used by geishas can be heard in it. The lyrics are also sung in a Kyoto dialect. This was originally intended as an April Fool's joke, but was so well received by the fans that the band released another video under the pseudonym on April 1, 2019. The specially composed title "祇 園 町" (Gion-cho) is presented. These two tracks were released along with five other tracks on the Band-Maiko album.

Miku....I mean Hatoko, writes World Domination in the beginning of Secret Maiko Lips. This was a joke the ladies pulled on April 1st, 2018. They announced that they changed their names to Band-Maiko, adopted Maiko names: Miku=Hatoko, Saiki= Fujiki, Kanami= Kanoemi, Akane =Akatsuki, and MISA= Umemisa(Umemisa, Umemisa, Umemisa!!!). A Maiko is a Geisha apprentice. They even changed the lyrics using a Kyoto dialect(Kyoto is the center of Geisha culture). It was so popular that they released a mini album the next year(all but one is a "cover" of Band-Maid songs). Gion-cho is a song written specifically for Band-Maiko. Secret My Lips is definitely one of my favorites. Nice double reaction!!!👍👍🤘🤘🤘

In Kyoto, the word "Geisha" is not used. In Kyoto, they are called "Geiko". Outside Kyoto, they are called "Geisha" in Japan. Of course, they are also "Geisha" in Tokyo. "Maiko" is also a word used only in Kyoto. "Maiko" uses its own language based on the Kyoto dialect, and Miku has adapted it to convert all of its lyrics into the language of Maiko. They are doing very elaborate things :)

Yep, a Maiko (pronounced "my-co" is an apprentice geisha. These scenes are reminiscent of Kyoto Japan, the ancient capital, where the geisha culture can still be found. Not nearly as many now, but learning about the geisha is very interesting in it's own right. This was released on an April 1st song - they turned an existing song on its head, using Kimonos and traditional instruments, like the shamisen. (stringed instrument) I'm sure I got something wrong but I don't mind being corrected. Okini (thank you in Kyoto dialect) for doing this fab double-header!!

Five of the most beautiful apprentice Geisha's that you will ever see. There are 3 comical things in this video that really make me smile. Misa's cute little wolf howl. And when they all pause as they hold up a bowl of food and look at the camera. But as we all know, Akane loves her food, so she just tucked straight into it without waiting for the other girls.. One other interesting thing about this version of the song is that they sang it in the dialect from Kyoto (the old capitol), which is the area of Japan associated with Geisha culture. The fan-throwing game at 10:44 is called tohsenkyo. If it were a formal game, there would be an opponent sitting opposite Saiki with a judge sitting in front of the target box. The two contestants would take turns throwing fans at the box, and the judge would score each toss based on the fan's posture and position. In the 1800s, tohsenkyo was so popular that it was banned because gambling on matches got out of control. I have no clue how good Saiki's throw was in the video.

Great job!. It has been a lot of fun. Band Maiko. I tend to consider this as a side project rather than an aprils fools joke. They do a tremendous job adapting their music to Japanese culture by showing great respect for it. To give you an idea, the lyrics are adapted to the Kyoto dialect, the place where the Geisha/Maiko worked. The music incorporates multiple layers of ancient chorus or instruments, digitally composed by lead guitar Kanami Tono The videos are an art work of setting and clothing (BTW, it is almost impossible to play instruments with that heavy and tight clothes). For the occasion they also change their names (Hatoko, Fujiki, Akatsuki, Kanoemi and UMEMISA). They released an EP in 2019 as Band Maiko with six Band Maid songs adaptations an one original as Band Maiko, "Gioncho". From this last song they made an MV of incredible visual beauty (you can find it in their official channel).

I agree with you Heather about alot of bands keeping their bass in the back and not even really noticeable in the music.. for example for like 15 years I did not know AC/DC had a bassist. Love both these songs and the clean, clear and evenly mixed instruments. Thank you for reacting to this video.

AC/DC is a perfect example, the Rhythm guitar and bass play the same things. Usually a string of 8th notes from the bass, that follows the chord progression. That gets so boring, so quickly. If your band's Bassist plays like this, you are crazy not to let them just do their thing.

The town I live in, seems to think Thunderstruck is it's anthem. I have such an intolerance for that song now. Because of this town, I can only really handle hearing the Bon Scott songs from AC/DC, but Bon was a WICKED vocalist. Such a unique voice. Brian Johnson's voice is unnatural.

This is nothing less than by far the best and highest quality April Fool's joke in music history. At least in my opinion. :) First performed with this song/video on April 1, 2018, the ladies changed their entire homepage and names on their social channels and announced that they wanted to go back to the roots of their history, in the process changing their name to Band-Maiko and continuing like this. If you think about it, it's a concept that also involves a bit of risk, because you could have scared away some followers with it, which fortunately wasn't the case at all in the end. Quite the contrary. The concept worked so well that on April 1 of the following year, they released not only a Band-Maiko original song & video titled 'Gion-Cho', which is 'highly recommendable' btw :) , but also a complete mini-album with several covers of the Maids in this style. In 2020, the concept was put to rest, which was probably due to the freshly erupted pandemic. This year however, the ladies, or rather one of them, didn't let themselves be deprived of the fun. Actually, after little teasers in some interviews, every one of us was sure that there would be a return of the lovely Maikos, but instead our heroine Miku has presented her solo project 'cluppo' with the song/video 'Peace & Love', which again shows a slightly different side of her. As if we didn't love and admire them enough for being exceptional musical talents, they also underline their inventiveness and creativity. :) _____________________ 【 Pigeons will save the world. 】- by cluppo / Miko Kobato 'Peace & Love' 🕊

It more about similarity rather than timeline, Maiko/Geisha still exist and operate the same way as it used to be hundreds of years ago, Maids in maid cafe and Geisha in tea houses pretty much do the same job with the only differences are traditions and era, they play sing, dance and flirt with their patrons, and serve food, while modern maids serve their masters in modern way, Geisha does the same in their ancient ways,

GREAT POINT!! Effects - "It's not used to fix something, it's used to "effect" something". MIKU (Rhythm Guitarists/2nd Singer) - I totally agree. I feel because of her late introduction in playing guitar she plays the "basic structure" of a song which really allows MISA (Bass) to do what she does, and a "sizable" part of what I think is Band Maid. Miku's anchor role allows MISA to be more expressive, and therefore the music. FYI - MISA is a "hybrid" bassist.... in that she plays with a pick, then slaps, then back to the pick. She NEVER drops the pick in transition. She also fingerpicks in songs, but usually she uses her own "hybrid" method. She loves using the pick and slapping. Band Maiko was an "April Fools" prank a few years ago..... They actually "overtook/Raided" the Band Maid site and proclaimed it as their own. Gion Cho is the only original Band Maiko song there is.... and it's great. A year after taking over Band Maid's site they did an EP of Band Maid covers which Gion Cho is a part of. It is a cool song and worth checking out........ Talk about fan service. This is a band that just keeps on giving. I wish them nothing but "World Domination".

Edo, rule of the Shogun, ended in 1867. By 1880 the first Giesha, Gieko in Kyoto, entered houses of prostitution to perform as artists and musicians in the lobby for customers as they waited their turn in the tatami room. Obviously, many Giesha were attractive and propositioned by the customers. So not medieval. In fact this chapter did not close until 1945. People say but prostitution is illegal in Japan but they haven't read Japanese law. Prostitution, in Japan can only occur with penis insertion in the vagina in exchange for money. Any other sex act can occur for money and it is not prostitution there. Typically, foreigners are not allowed though this is slowly changing. Also in Kyoto, among the very conservative population they dislike all foreigners. Who is a foreigner? Anyone not from Kyoto to include all Japanese not from that historical city. Gion-cho is a neighborhood in Kyoto.

I agree, the added Shimasen, cuts straight through that mix. It's interesting because the tambour and pitch of that instrument really has nothing to fight with in the general mix of that track, so it cuts through very clearly and makes that track pop. It would be cool to hear one of their tracks completely acoustic with traditional instrumentation.
