A Maiko is a trainee Geisha from Kyoto. This was an April fools joke. On April 1st 2018 the Band-Maid website and You Tube channel was taken down and replaced by Band-Maiko. All music was removed and replaced with this MV. They stated this was their new direction. They also don't sing in normal Japanese dialect, they sing in Kyoto dialect. They also changed their names: Saiki became Fujiki Miku became Hatoko Kanami became Kanoemi MISA became Umemisa Akane became Akatsuki In 2019 they did it again on April 1st releasing the MV to "Gion-Cho" - the only Band-Maiko original. They also released a seven track EP of Band-Maid covers with added traditional instruments plus "Gion-Cho" "Secret Maiko Lips" (Band-Maids "Secret My Lips") "Akasimahen" (Band-Maids "Awkward") "Ansan" (Band-Maids "Anemone") "Tora and Tora" (Band-Maids "One and Only") "Yolosiosu" (Band-Maids "YOLO") "Screaming" (Band-Maids "Screaming") "Gion Cho"

One of my favorite things about Band-Maid besides great musicianship and great songs is all of the unique interesting little things that they have in each and every song that make me even more impressed with them. The little fills, the bass melodies, the guitar backing riffs, the vocal interplay and melodies, and just the little details that they include that just blow my mind with amazement. Band-Maid have earned a spot at the top of my favorite bands of all-time and they seem to be getting better with every thing new that they write and record.

SECRET MY LIPS is an amazing Hard Rock song that sounds like no other I’ve ever heard. KANAMI created SECRET MAIKO (my-koh) LIPS as an April Fool’s joke by taking the original instrumental tracks and recording a new vocal track where SAIKI sings lyrics in the style of the Kyoto dialect. She then mixed in samples of SHAMISEN (three-string banjo) and SHAKUHAXHI (bamboo flute). The cherry on top is the whoops provided by MISA (the only time we hear her voice in a song). BAND-MAIKO released a full album of BANAD-MAID covers, plus one original song, GION-CHO (the name of the famous town in Kyoto that is home to the traditional geisha houses). Check out the beautiful video. MAIKO are young trainee geisha. The ladies are wearing beautiful and very expensive KIMONO (which literally means “things you wear” in Japanese). In this video we see the MAIKO doing MAIKO things and playing MAIKO games.

Believe it or not, I overlooked this song as first because the title seemed weird to me. 🤦🏻 What a song! Speedy hard rock, Akane’s switch to half time for a power chorus, signature Maid drop interlude…jazz!?…unexpected…straight out to the chorus. And great lyrics; worth reading on your own. Complicated and clever. I’m a musician, so it blows my mind knowing just how much work they put into each song. Band Maid are more than just musicians. They’re international ambassadors. Being a fan of their music comes with exposure to Japanese words, customs, and has even taught me the throwing folding fan game from this video. (Tohsenkyo) It’s scored something like horseshoes, if you’re familiar. And if you’re wondering, yes, they play this live just like the studio version. Kanami’s little foot tapping away on her pedal board to switch tones throughout. “Secret my lips” has become a top ten song for me. For me, it separates Band Maid from everyone else out there today. Great reaction as always! I have enjoyed watching you fall further down the pigeonhole. Keep exploring! 💎

On the Band Maiko album, there were some outtakes that if you can find them will crack you up. One is of Misa after doing the weird sound on one of the song, bending over and laughing her butt off at the sound. Another outtake was of Akane having to walk a set of steps in a kimono and the wooden platform sandals. The look on her face during the photo shoot for the video was "If I fall in these, someone's going to die."

A few easter eggs - MISA always performs barefoot (hence her nickname, The Barefoot Assassin). But in MAIKO lips, she's shown wearing zori (Japanese kimono sandals). Also MISA doesn't really do vocals so they had her do the "howling" at 10:22 which is commonly done in Japanese Kabuki theater. And at 10:50, Akane immediately eating the udon ramen while everyone else breaks the fourth wall is a running joke as Akane has a virtually bottomless appetite for ramen.

Nice to meet you. I always enjoy looking at your works. I am Japanese and I would like to explain the lyrics used in this song. (I try to comment on Band-Maiko's reactions with this explanation, so I know some of you who read this comment section have already read it somewhere else, but I'll post it here as well.) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ In all the songs of BAND-MAIKO, Saiki uses the word called "京ことば Kyo-kotoba(Kyoto dialect)". The Kyo-kotoba has many special phrases that are different from the so-called "Kansai-ben(Kansai region dialect. Kyoto is included in the Kansai region)", and even if you are from Kyoto, it is not a word that ordinary people other than maiko and geisha use on a daily basis. Many maiko are not from Kyoto, but when working as a maiko in Kyoto, it is not desirable to use the dialect of the region in which they were born and raised. Therefore, the training content of Maiko includes the acquisition of this Kyo-kotoba. The Kyo-kotoba is, so to speak, a "common language" for maiko and geisha. ※ "Maiko(Pronunciation is my-ko)" means a person in the apprenticeship stage of Geiko (Geisha).
