Although she is from Kumamoto, Miku is very fond of Kyoto and visits it whenever she can. 'Gion-cho' means Gion town, and is her "love letter" to that part of the old capitol of Kyoto that is the heart of Geiko culture. A Maiko is an apprentice Geiko in training. Geiko is the regional version of what we would think of as a Geisha.

Cap'n, in the "Making of Gion-cho" vid, Kanami was playing along to the backing track & dropped her pick. Her kimono was so tight she couldn't bend down to get it & had to ask one of the crew members, whilst she giggled & smiled sweetly :)

This is another grower. It's always exciting when the girls do something different, and they do it frequently that I never get bored. I always find myself singing one of their songs in my head. Even bottom of the ladder song in my b-m playlist dominates my mind for a few hours until I listen to another bandmaid song. Oh in this case band - maiko.

It's about deciding to be a Geisha. And a Maiko is a Geisha in training. So the words are the Geisha speaking to the Maiko, telling her what to do, and the Maiko thinking her life now, and talking to the customer and thinking nostalgically about the history of her city, which is Kyoto, the birthplace of Geisha.

My take of this songs is about. Maiko is apprentice for Geisha and this song is about young Maiko motivating herself to work hard to become Geisha one day. Gion-Cho is area in Kyoto where young maiko are trained and working. Raise your butt is Japanese saying of get your ass moving. This kind of overall with Miku, Banmaid's vision to be awesome rack band. Or Miku's own story for coming to Tokyo from Kumamoto to success in music business. Miku also loves Kyoto and visit often and the admiration and love for the city is in the song.

I can tell that Heather would be an awesome poker player!! You two are fun to watch.

I love at 3:11 how Miku, er, I mean, Hatoko does the tea ceremony for the others but -Akane- Akatsuki is working on some noodles. One thing about the tea ceremony itself is that when stirring the matcha, I believe the stirring should be a north/south motion, not circular like what I believe is going on here. It's a nitpick, I know, and I could be wrong, but in a ceremony where every movement is meaningful and practiced in minute detail, nitpicking is the name of the game. Fantastic song. I still think it's one of Saiki's best vocal performances. The video is lovely, too.

The Tea Ritual is very nitpickey. I think you are right. I also even think it is supposed to be North (away from you) first.

You really should react to Nemophila’s new cover of Rosier by Lunasea. It’s so amazing. And we get to hear the bass player sing a bit!

Miku's harmonies with Saiki near the end are the most beautiful of any Band Maid/Maiko song.

They did six original songs as _Band Maiko_ not just covering _Band Maid_ songs. This is one of them.

@@CaptainFaceBeard It’s pretty much impossible to play while wearing a traditional kimono and they aren’t going to play them as Band Maid. The only time I know of them playing Band Maiko songs live was during the live show in Kyoto for obvious reasons.

I checked the English translation of the lyrics. It is mostly OK. Some parts sounded funny because those parts were word-to-word translation (instead of semantic translation). For example, "raise your butt up" most likely meant as "don't be lazy and move promptly with your will" In Japan, "heavy butt" means laziness or "not moving when one should be". So that part of the lyrics meant "don't be heavy butt"...probably😏

Direct translations from Japanese to English can turn out really strange. Heather and I both used to FanSub Anime, the editors had a rough time with getting some of the lines to sound naturally phrased from time to time.

Captain FaceBeard The "Gion-cho" lyrics are written in refined Kyoto dialect with some expressions (called 女房言葉 in Japanese) which originated with the ladies of the imperial court when it was located in Kyoto and which the geiko adopted. The "raise your rear" line - おいどすっと引き上げ - uses for "rear end" a term おいど which is one of the 女房言葉 expressions. These expressions are common among geiko. There's no way any English translation can render the quality of the original lyrics and in fact some of the terminology in the original lyrics is not translated. Some fans have said that "cherry blossoms" has a sexual connotation too, but in the "Gion-cho" lyrics that term is used like a season-word in haiku poetry, because the video was released in the spring (April 1, the album April 3, 2019) and the lyrics are set in the spring. The Band-Maiko album has seven tunes and some of the other tunes have lyrics that are sexually suggestive but the "Gion-cho" lyrics are not so.

Howzit Captain and Heather.. Beat me to this one... First time seeing.. :) Thanks.. What an awesome song!! You have to watch Without holding back (instramental) MV. I know of both of your loves for the bass.. This is a nonstop bass solo throughout the whole song (as only Misa can do), not making any less of Akane, Kanami, and The Little Pigeon who are all fantastic too.. One of their best, sadly missing Saiki, but thats what instramentals do. :) Great reaction.. Best wishes from France.

Raise your butt...🤭well.....Seiza is the formal way of sitting down based on ancient Japanese standards (which means sitting with legs bent, knees forward, and buttocks resting on the heels)...so might be interpreted as getting up with almost the same as being proud to yourself even people around you look down on what you do in life....i guess so correct me if I'm wrong..lol Maiko is kinda geisha apprentice...so reading the lyrics (almost kinda metaphor that need to understand the meaning of it)..well i guess I don't have to explain that much😜,.... Ma'am you are very close to right. And it is a very adult song. Gion-cho is in Kyoto. It is the most old school conservative neighborhood throughout the land. In Gion-cho the definition of a foreigner with all its negative connotations, is anyone not originally from Gion-cho. To include fellow Japanese as well. With kimonos you have ladies who wear one of three. Giesha, which are called Gieko in Kyoto, are older wearing wigs. Many other subtle differences as well but space limited here. Maiko, real hair and bright headgear. By age 20 you become Giesha or you go home. All our ladies are far too old to be Maiko or apprentices. Lastly, Oiran or prostitutes which wear elevated shoes. There is a famous Oiran walk there where a prostitute is wearing platform shoes so high she needs a person on each side to prop her up while she strolls. Giesha first entered houses of prostitution in the 1880's as artists and musicians to entertain the clientele while they waited their turn. Look at the lyrics. Red light means the same thing around the world. Where are the cherry blossoms does not refer to flowers on a tree. Raise your ass up and this is your life is self explanatory. Sai-chan welcomes the customer, offers sake and says let's go at it in the tatami room. Tatami are mats that roll up and they, at the time of Geisha appearing in the houses of prostitution, were a sign of wealth for anyone who owned his own tatami. Owning a mat to sleep on! Think about that. Lastly and with "hospitality" Sai-chan sings thank you and please come again. This is the story as you guessed of a young lady who failed but won't stand for it. And she will do whatever it takes to get a bankroll to finance her return or reemergence. That is pure Miku. Is prostitution legal in Japan? No. But here is the thing. Prostitution can only occur with penis insertion into the vagina for money. You can put it anywhere else you might like for money all day long as long as you don't do that one very specific act. Thanks for promoting my favorite hard rock band working anywhere on the planet today. Sacramento loves Band-Maid. And, yeah, l saw them live. They shine in person.

The lyrics of some of the seven songs on the Band-Maiko album are quite suggestive, but "Gion-cho" is not. The "raise your rear" line is not a sexual reference, as the context of the verse indicates. (The English translation is hopeless and no help in this regard.) The "cherry blossoms" in the "Gion-cho" lyrics corresponds to a season-word in haiku poetry, given that the video was released in the spring. Red is an auspicious color in East Asia and red lanterns have never been restricted to adult entertainment districts in Japan, although it's a fact that drinking establishments often have them nowadays. It's easy enough to see sexual connotations when a song mentions red lights or cherry blossoms, but it's a stretch as far as the "Gion-cho" lyrics go. Other songs on the Band-Maiko album would be better candidates for such association.

What started as an April Fool's prank turned into something that is no joke. These ladies apparently can't do anything that is less than stellar. Since you've already done a reaction to to Secret My Lips, how about doing Secret Maiko Lips?
