I love how you don’t try to get the colors exactly the same as the reference. I get so stressed sometimes trying to match my panting exactly to the reference in all ways. I forget that it’s okay to do it differently especially if it’s easier.

I honestly love that you’re a slow painter. You make me feel so much better about my speed in art. When I was a younger artist, I used to be able to put out art in under 2 hours… but for the past 2ish years, I can’t seem to do art faster than 2 hours. My art tends to average 5 hours at best and 24 hours at most if I struggled. And to see you actually consider each brush stroke and the complexities of lighting and rendering is smoothing. I think with imawonder and Cosmic Spectrum, their process is so ingrained and straightforward that it’s so quick for them (I also believe their lineart has a factor in their speed) while you’re a bit more intuitive and cautious, which makes your process slower.

  • @ChrisHongArt

As you say line art probably does help streamline the process a bit! i can say for my friend cosmic spectrum that she's got her process down pat lol whereas I feel like every new piece is a new problem I have to solve X'D but hoping to develop a reliable process I can fall back on!

Loved it! Ballpoints are everywhere and I've found myself picking them up and doodling whatever is in front of me. I love the fact that they don't bleed all over when you wash over them with bits of color, and I have tried some blind/contour with them and...it's fun because...you don't worry about cost, esp if the pen was free, you don't worry about being messy because some pens are so light you need to scribble to see the ink; it's not considered an "ART" supply...it's an office product, so you get to NOT call it art and just have fun without having to worry about how your drawing looks. I really liked this video. Gave me some great ideas. I hope you do more of these.

This is really good. I want to suggest use a paper towel with your left hand. When you lay down the color, when your edge from light to dark is too sharp, blot it very lightly and it makes a middle tone between the light and dark. Also, after it's dry. You can take a damp brush and rub out that area too. Just try those two things to get the times to face in better. However,. All said and done, it turned out fantastic after it was dry, even with the harder edges. It made it striking and lovely. I looooouuuuve the ball point pens you used!

How do you decide what colors to throw in a picture? I love the way you approach your art and it makes me so happy to watch. I have such a hard time with knowing what to change up to make it feel like the reference but not being an exact copt of it. When I draw, I get so stressed out about making it an almost exact replica of the reference. I never would have looked at those cat pictures and chosen the colors that you did. I really strive to have a much more loose and imaginative art work that I often end up in such an art block mentally because I cannot get over making everything exact. It honestly holds me back from just creating. I guess what I'm saying is, I draw with such realism, however; that isn't the style of art that I want to create. My art never feels like it's mine or my style because it always comes out so realistic. How do you push yourself into that imaginative direction that makes the art feel like your own creations even when drawing from references?

There is a cure for undercharging or fear of getting too high prized. Start logging time for a decent amount of works and spit the difference. Once you have this number, add your profit margin and ask fixed prizes. Your challenge will be to find enough work that you come out on top.

Just found your site. Beautiful style and drawings. Is it typical that you let the underlay contour linework set the hue for the entire drawing and remain prominent? Do you ever use fineliner pens?

I'm assuming ball point pen is not archival? Do we know anything about the lightfastness? At any rate, I'm definitely going to try this in my sketchbook!
