---
Former Ballet Mistress Ursula Hageli looks at the development of pointe work in ballet, where the dancers move on the tips of their toes - from Marie Taglioni’s experiments in the 1830s, through developments by Italian and Russian dancers through to the famed pointe work of Russian Classical ballet. With danced demonstrations by Gemma Pitchley-Gale and Fumi Kaneko.
Ballet Evolved events explore the ballet through the centuries from its origins at the French court. It is one of a number of Insights held at the Royal Opera House. Find out more:

But I came back today from my first class, and hear me out, I absolutely loved it and can't wait for tomorrow

I don't know a lot about ballet, but I know that I am just entranced when I watch it!!! Absolutely beautiful!!!!!
I don't do ballet anymore but I love watching these vids! Also, as someone who plays the piano, boy, are those pianists underappreciated! They're amazing.
Both of these girls are such beautiful dancers.
very interesting. I love learning of the history with the visual examples. They really help me understand the transitions each country provided.
Fumi is such a beautiful dancer! The amount of practice she must've put into ballet inspires me ♥
I come back to this video every so often just to watch Fumi Kaneko's Queen of the Dryads variation. Her performance, combined with the beautifully played arrangement on the piano, is so lovely - I prefer it to the videos of her performing it on stage!
Lovely... when you're a 6 year old child you just think the tutu is a pretty adornment - then you realise it was 'saving dignity' whilst showing the leg... now a days I enjoy watching rehearsals more than performance because of the work you can see happening... really enjoyed this! thank you very much x
Gorgeous playing from Paul Stobart; beautiful improvisations, and also a magnificently warm and stylish reduction of the Queen of the Dryads solo. My congratulations, also, to the piano technician and also those responsible for recording the sound.

The Fumi's happy face when she's dancing is so contagious
Fumi is amazing! Her port de bras are so lovely! I actually clapped and yelled "Brava!" when she finished.
Those automatic subtitles kill me. "Can we see the pizzicato, please?" becomes "Can we see the pizza cart, oh please? " And "Don Quixote" becomes the "Donkey king"...
Exquisite dancing, forgot I was supposed to be watching the feet. Very interesting indeed, thank you.
If only my back wasn’t so twisted, I would so be trying this. Pointe always looks so beautiful, truly like magic. But I know it’s hell on one’s body. Nothing but respect to these women
Gemma and Fumi are both such beautiful dancers.
Quite interesting and wow, what a wonderful rendition of the Queen of Dryads' variation !!! Congratulations to Fumi Kaneko but also to the piansit who makes the music more beautiful, rich and thrilling at the piano than with the full orchestra.
Lovely!! And informative. I think dancers could really build dimension in their characters when they learn the history behind it all; great lesson! I especially liked how Fumi finished her Dryad solo - so solid yet fluid. :D
Fumi Kaneko is one of the most beautiful ballerinas I've ever seen, she seems to move effortlessly. Always a joy to watch Fumi perform!!
I love how for most people who dont dance or know much about dance, the bright pink ballerina shoe with its crossed ribbons all the way up to the knee is such an icon of delicacy. And you see for the first time what ballerinas do to their brand new shoes when they get them to break them in, going absolutely to town on them with all their strength sometimes, and its a bit of a culture shock moment honestly.
Fumi is a fantastic artist! 6:35 Her hands twinkle with the piano!
i'm getting my pointe shoes soon and i'm really excited!! i've had a lot of problems with my feet and ankles since before i danced, so i've really struggled building the strength for it but i've been working really hard and i'm so excited for it to pay off! the rest of my friends are ahead of me and already have their shoes but everytime i get unmotivated and disheartened i come back to these sorts of videos to motivate myself and see what i'm working for. hopefully i get them some time this term!! good luck to everyone else working for theirs, you got this:)))

Let's give a round of applause for all people on stage. The lecturer for her knowledge the dancers for their beautiful talent making the hard look easy and the pianist for the music.

My dance teacher told me I could get pointe shoes yesterday and I can't wait!! I'm 14 but I was in a small studio that closed down a little while ago the teacher wanted everyone to go en pointe at the same time so whenever there was a new girl we'd have to wait even longer but in my new studio we do competitions , grade work , shows and exams every year so I'm moving at a much faster pace and I LOVE IT!! The teachers at my new studio normally don't let you en pointe until you've been in the studio for a year and I've been there for 4 months so I'm really happy

So informative!! There is something really great about the romantic age style. I like to see the nice footwork they used it wasn't all about the pointe and I kind of like to see it! Even though she doesn't get on pointe as much, the dancing still looks just as graceful and elegant! I kind of wish more modern ballet choreography included more dance steps like these :)!

That last solo was absolutely mesmorising!!
Fumi is gorgeous and has exquisite form too
this is the most amazing and exhilarating perfromance ive ever seen in my whole fucking damn horrible life !
The second girl’s shoes look like they’re almost dead!
In my 40 years of studying dance, I've never had this explained to me in a visualization! This makes more sense now then just reading it! Thank you!
Fumi Kaneko, I'm your new number one fan!!!
This video was very informative, and that's why I really like this channel's video.
Brava!! Just beautiful! Thank you for this knowledge filled video. As an educator I love sharing how we've gotten to where we are and I feel it's left out way to often and replaced with tricks to try and keep dancers interested, so thank you so much! I love ROH! All the creative vibes to you all!
I danced for 12 years growing up and I recently decided to start again. I’m now 24 and I had quit when I was 14 but I still remember a great deal! I hope maybe someday I can be on pointe again.
I literally just got my pointe shoes today and now I’m binging ballet videos
I love the low leg positions from early choreo. So much more elegant. I remember doing this amazing Baroque dance and music course one time. There were a couple of National Ballet students there who had a bit of a practice at lunchtime. He took her hand and she went up into an arabesque which was fairly normal for modern ballet style but, compared to the Baroque dance, it looked positively vulgar. haha
absolutely beautiful
Fumi's ballet tech is absolutely perfect! clean and wonderful. thanks for nice video
I do ballet, ballet flats only though. It’s harder than some people think.
Fumi Kaneko is so beautiful!
I have a break from dance for a month so i spend my time watching pointe videos and breaking in my pointe shoes 😂😂
My dance studio is named after Marie Taglioni and it was really nice to learn about this!!! Thank you!!
I love the history of dance! Thank you for all your amazing videos about it!
i can't wait to get my point shoes so i can dance like that! They are sooooo talented
History of the tutu: it was created for the Paris theater whereby the toff males were in the lower seats and could peer up the legs to the crotch whereas the 'nice' people who were also Victorians, saw the female dancer from ABOVE and could see her dainty feet kick out from under the tutu's umbrella but not see her LEGS so well! This bizarre way of dressing which we think is 'normal' today was actually a Victorian era combination of moral rectitude combined with Playboy desires to see a lady's legs.
