The Sleeping Beauty: The challenges of technically demanding roles (The Royal Ballet)
Ойын-сауық
Sarah Lamb, Steven McRae and Alexander Agadzhanov on how technically demanding the two lead roles are in The Sleeping Beauty. Find out more at www.roh.org.uk/sleepingbeauty
The Sleeping Beauty holds a special place in The Royal Ballet's repertory. It was the ballet with which the Company reopened the Royal Opera House in 1946 after World War II, announcing its move from Sadler's Wells to Covent Garden. Margot Fonteyn danced the role of the beautiful princess Aurora in the first performance, with Robert Helpmann as Prince Florimund. Sixty years later, in 2006, the original 1946 staging was revived, returning Oliver Messel's wonderful designs and glittering costumes to the stage once again.
Marius Petipa's classic 19th-century choreography is combined with newly created sections by Frederick Ashton, Anthony Dowell and Christopher Wheeldon. The ballet contains many memorable moments, from the iconic Rose Adagio, when Aurora meets her four royal suitors, to the vigorous hunting dances and the famous waltz for Aurora and her Prince. Throughout, Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky's score conveys passion and intensity.

The technical demands affect the ENTIRE cast, not just the two leads! Which is why few companies are brave enough to take it on

I was lucky enough to see these two at the cinema. Steven McRae came across as such a considerate partner. As a dancer he's an understated gem by the press. I was incredibly impressed by his control, power, lines, balon, and acting. Great partnering too. Sarah was light, beautiful and so much control. Great partnership to watch. Hope their cast together again.

2:15 That's how you know he was casted perfectly for that role. In ballet, the man is supposed to lead and guide and be that pillar for the ballerina to lean on. He's acknowledges that super well and you can see it in the dance. It's not about overpowering her or controlling her, but to be present for her.
I love watching all of these Royal ballet videos , to study the ballerinas techniques, I'm 11, and I've been doing ballet for 8 years and my teacher says I'm nearly ready to go on pointe!!!

Beautiful, this is why I love ballet, it shows even the masters struggle, ballet is something you always learn and progress with, challenging and freeing all at the same time 😊
( 4:16 - 4:48 ) “I think all that time in rehearsal, you can work and work and work and work. And then on stage you just have to remember, that what happens is what’s happening in the moment. So if you’re not enjoying it in some way, and if you’re not showing the lightness and the beauty, and what ballet is really about. Which is not just technique, technique, technique, but someone conveying a story through movement; then you know, then there’s, there’s no point. You have to remember that, and that’s really all that matters ultimately.” ~Sarah Lamb

Steven is also perfect. He understands the team . That is what matters in ballet
it's so wild to me that the prince also did the mad hatter's role as well. the magic of acting, make up, costumes, and different styles of dancing lmao
That was lovely. I was proud that an American woman could make her way to principal at the Royal Ballet. I've seen Steven McRae on several videos and he has such an amazing presence. It's a warm day in California and I found this video soothing.
Steven McRae is so sweet and sensitive and intelligent. And not to mention talented
02:20 My God bless his soul. Steven is such a gentleman, fml. True Prince Charming, he so sweet I literally melted the second he opened his mouth 😍😍😍😍😢😢😢
I love her white leotard at the beginning!
Praise also to the work of repetiteur, Alexander Agadzhanov or "Sasha", whose calm patience has been an inspiration to so many dancers in the last 30 years in London.
Oh, delightful! PLEASE release a DVD of this pair, they are magical together!
This is fascinating. It is really interesting to understand the thinking and preparation behind what takes place on stage, and it causes me to reflect on how ballet is far more than just pretty entertainment, but a metaphor and inspiration for life, accomplishing finesse through very considerable difficulty, dedication, sacrifice, with all of the accompanying rewards as well. Bravo!
When I saw Steven McRae dancing on the stage in that clip my heart melted ❤️
I've never danced , I can't dance and never will but still ballet entrusted me and I believe is extremely underrated through its athleticism and that people honk it's easy but I don't believe that I think it would be an extremely difficult sport/ art form I take my hat off to all the dancers you guys are great

It’s astounding the difference, watching these videos, seeing up close just how difficult each move is, then watching the dancers on stage from a distance and they make every move look effortless. Ballet is such a beautiful art form. Beautiful yet so hard. (I’ve never danced)
I love how the editor's decided to seamlessly transition between the live performance orchestral music and the virtuosic piano playing during the rehearsal :)

This clip reminds me of my first time watching the 4 princes scene. It was a much smaller company, and that Aurora was shaking A LOT when she was held by the princes. I didn’t know ballet that much back then but watching her entire body shaking like that, I knew immediately this part must be super hard for the dancer. I didn’t realize dancers could hold still In this scene until I saw ABT’s production. Well I know I am watching The Royal Ballet here, I guess all I want to say is there is a big difference between elite companies and not-so -well-known companies! I believe that shaking Aurora must have worked super hard to become the principle of that small company, it just proves how difficult ballet is!
They're all so soft spoken and truly invested and passionate, gosh I love it.. I forgot how much I love ballet 🥺
Beautiful: for sure ballet is no joke ! Love Steven McRae: incredible dancer with magnificent line and style.
Sarah is amazing! I also saw her on screen in Alice in Wonderland. I loved it!! She's an incredible dancer.
I didn’t understand how difficult of a ballet sleeping beauty is (though I was blown away by the performance) and I feel so lucky to have gotten to watch the sleeping beauty now. It was absolutely gorgeous and made me fall in love with ballet. Truly an art. It makes you appreciate the beauty of humans
Sarah Lamb is breathtaking. This looks like a beautiful production!

I've been dancing since 2015 and i used to do cheerleading when I was in middle and early high school so im pretty flexible. my dance teachers say I am a natural and its incredible considering how late i started ballet that I'm on pointe now. I wouldn't have been able to do any of this without my incredible dance teachers making me work so hard
I'm a little disappointed they didn't mention the act three wedding pas de deux. The three duck(or fish) dives they have near the end are simply impressive, especially when it comes to the trust between partners.
I adore Monica Mason. I remember her as a dancer, she was exquisite.

04:22 - 04:30 Ballet is a graceful sport, and we sacrifice our body, feel the hot pain. We are doing a worthy thing, ballet is the calmness of life. - UNKNOWN I totally agree!! When I dance ballet, I feel like I am a bird soaring high, my surroundings are clouded. For those who think ballet as a painful and negative: I think you have no taste. Yes, we take a risk sometimes but life is a tower of risks and choices. The correct choice for me is ballet, and that is what I will do for a lifetime. UNKNOWN has written and means well. BALLET IS ENCHANTED

I have a famous ballet school 💃🏼I love sleeping beauty 👸🏼
god damn. is there any clips of this ballet online?
Is it bad that the whole time the director was talking, I was eyeing the piano? Ahahahh Really good videos, though! I love ballet even though I’ve never had the chance to see a show myself
As far as I can see only the Royal Ballet due such an extended solo for the rose adagio no other company attempts it.
The most classic roles seem to always be the most difficult...
She is real life Aurora!
I like what the Male dancer has to say about what the ballet means... it really makes you think!
