There was a question here about my publications. I can't seem to find the post, but for general information: I have a PhD in History from the University of Hamburg. My dissertation, "General Friedrich Olbricht: Ein Mann des 20. Julis" was published by the renowned German academic publisher Bouvier Verlag in 1993 and, after very positive reviews in the Sueddeutsche, FAZ and other leading German papers was sold out and re-issued in 1994. The English language version, "Codename Valkyrie: General Friedrich Olbricht and the Plot Against Hitler" was published by the British specialty press Haynes Publishing in 2009. My comparative study of women pilots in WWII, "Sisters in Arms," was published by the aviation branch of the respected British publishing house Pen & Sword in 2006 and again in 2015. My book on the Berlin Airlift, "The Blockade Breakers," was published by The History Press, 2008 and 2010. Naturally, my novels are per definition not academic studies and as such unsuitable for publication with academic presses or other publishing houses focused on non-fiction publications such as Pen and Sword and The History Press. After retirement, I hope to find the time to produce a thorough history of the Ibelin family or release with a respected history press.

Apologies, I know my question is not directly related to the video. However, I believed the contributors of Real Crusade History would more likely see this question on a more recent video. Regarding St. George, what exactly did the crusaders see according to historical sources in the context of apparitions of St. George to inspire the soldiers to victory? Moreover, was it the believed intercession of St. George in several battles that led to Crusaders having a great devotion to this saint and adapting a love for him and encouraging this among their countrymen upon their return to their native countries? Similarily, from what I have read, St. George is also stated to have appeared to knights and the people of Malta in their defense against Islamic armies. What is your knowledge of this? Is St. George therefore a defender of knights of Christendom? I am just curious what your scholarly views are on St. George and his part in the crusades and indeed his role upon Christian knights and monarchs. Update: Dear Bill, thanks that was helpful. Obviously, I know he did not physically take part in the crusades and was an early Church Martyr, that is general knowledge and easily obtainable. What I wanted to know was, what exactly do historical sources state the crusaders had seen in the context of apparitions of St. George to inspire them to victory. Thanks for answering this question and particularly the information regarding Demetrius of Thessaloniki, and Mauritiu, I will check that out. Many thanks.

Thanks for the great interview, J. Stephen! The questions really focused on conversation on the important aspects of Balian's life and why it is worth writing about.

It is possible that you make a video dedicated to the byzantine Emperor Manuel I Kommenos and his influence on the crusades?

Any movie should be taken with pailfuls of salt. But their ability to influence those with no awareness of the Crusades is significant sadly.

Great podcast/talk, but man is Orlando Bloom going to be the portrait of Balian forever now since that movie Kingdom of Heaven! I hope NOT! Bloom does not look very Kingly or carry himself like a king. I would like to think Balian looked more intimidating than any of Orlando's pics. Someone like Grordon Napier should do a rendition of Balian. Shame Balian himself or others around wrote so little about him. I bet there is some amazing stuff about him lost to time. Great work Dr. Schrader and J.
