I actually think it's much more common than you think. Just look at Remedy, Larian, Fromsoft, Nintendo, Kojima etc. There are a lot of really really good and passionate devs out there. Especially outside of the US. I actually think there are a lot of similarly minded people in Western development, but they're stuck under the yolk of greedy corporate shareholders who only care about the bottom line. Larian literally went indie (which is super risky) to escape that corporate pressure. Hopefully more creative teams will follow suit.

@@yveltalsea Mario Wonder, both of the recent Zelda games, Pikman, etc. Nintendo’s got plenty of passion and care behind their games and pretty much always delivers polished entries in their core franchises. And they have general innovation with console design (Wii and Switch). Some of their business practices aren’t great for consumers (but make sense for their own business since they are hardware sales dependent and make a profit from console sales unlike Sony/Xbox). I’ve also never seen them stuff their games with microtransactions 🤷🏻‍♂️

@@gatorarman12 Pikmin is made by a subsidiary developer, not Nintendo. The recent Zelda game was poorly written, with some of the worst repetitive quest dialogue I've ever seen in a game, and was basically a copy of BotW with some new mechanics that arent really necessary in most of the game. BotW was revolutionary and really changed the market but definitely not TotK. The amount of reused assets in the sky area was abysmal, and the underground exploration was some of the laziest level design I've ever seen. And they don't really care about a lot of their playerbase given the state of Mario Kart 8 online servers lol. Pikmin is definitely the exception, but like I said, it's a different company. Plus a company who cares about their players wouldnt ban tournaments for their games like Smash, and take down videos of people playing their games. Like other companies, Nintendo is just as greedy. There is no way anyone can compare a company like Nintendo to a company like Larian. Larian is on a different level.

Before we get excited for "One really big RPG to dwarf them all" we have to remember that the new Larian game, whenever it comes out isn't going to be the biggest RPG because the tech hasn't been invented, that is coming later. I totally fell in love and eventually started playing on my own and only recently finished my first playthrough all by myself. Once again, I'm not a gamer so this was a big deal for me 😂.....I've been craving some good fantasy for quite some time now. Not taking up BG4 was clever move by Larian studios. Nothing in BG4 could have surpassed BG3.They would just be setting themselves up for disappointment as expectations would be impossibly high that they are better off avoiding the stress and have a fresh start with a new IP. DLC was never realistic considering all different choices made throughout a playthrough making it extremely difficult to tie into a new story expansion. BG3 does not need expansion. Despite problems with the third act, particularly the abrupt ending, BG3 is one of the best games of all time and a stark contrast with the current trends of gaming. I look forward to their next project. Praying that its a detective game similar to LA.Noire. It would fit well with Larian's game design.

Cool interview. Thanks for sharing this insight from Larian. I'm currently about exploring Cazador's palace, & looking forward to the battle with the 3rd 'chosen'. I usually stay clear of turn-based games, & I've never played D&D before... but I'm loving BG3 It was incredible to hear how Larian shutdown its production in order to help their team get out of the war's dangers, + the fact that they don't chase profits... instead they focus on evolving their company, (I feel like that's fantastic advice that many other companies should take to heart as well)

Unfortunately it has a shitshow of a launch on Steam. Here I was thinking Capcom's venturing great into their redemption arc, but they just had to do it again... MTX in a singleplayer, $80 game is unacceptable, having to pay extra to customise your character is even worse. Not to mention the poor performance.

I had no idea Larian Studios existed before bg3. I only really played MMORPG's. Now I am addicted to Baldur's Gate 1/2/and 3 and I will be buying DOS1 and 2 on payday. I did used to play a lot of turn based rpg's in the form of Final Fantasy and games like them but BG3 has opened my eyes to this entire genre of games and they are perfect for me as I get older. Much more chill while still being challenging and complex. I've not has this much fun gaming since I played Heroes of Might and Magic 2 on my Packard Bell PC that had 128Mb of RAM

I'm actually glad that they're not going to immediately go into Baldur's Gate 4. The last thing I want is to see a studio like Larian suffer from sequel-itis. I think Sven is absolutely right, if you're forced to just keep doing the same thing you'll start to get stale. I think it'd be better for them to explore some new IPs or try something they find interesting - chances are we'll get a much more inspired and high quality game, and they may be able to use what they learn from the experience down the road when or if they do decide to do a Baldur's Gate 4.
