probably chose spores because of it's relevance to certain parts of BG3. Lots of druids in Act 1, and without spoiling too much, there are some areas and quests that are appropriate for a Spores Druid. There's also a lot of Underdark in this game as well, which is another reason I think they chose spores druid and gloomstalke ranger in particular. They seem to have limited themselves to 3 subclasses per class, otherwise it would get messy pretty quick and balancing would be all over the place, and it seems like they chose subclasses that are appropriate for, or relate to, the setting. They did squeeze some subclasses together too, like pact of blade/hexblade warlock and some others.

Wow, I just pitched this exact build for a character idea to my discord group (we have a 4 player run planned at release) but I was actually having trouble figuring out how to do my build. Part of me wants to start Monk to lvl 6 for shadow step asap, then go gloomstalker but I haven't decided on how many levels given BG3's lvl 12 cap. This might sound crazy, but I'm considering 1 lvl Monk, then 1 lvl Ranger (for Hunter's Mark to use with Flurry of Blows for early damage boost), then back to Monk til lvl 6. The main reason for this is that I don't know how long it will take to get to lvls 7-8 in game, but it'll probably feel like forever since we're doing a completionist run. I don't want to lag behind the rest of my party too much but I figure I can stomach getting my 2nd attack one level later than everyone else. Care to share any tips?

  • @rymcmanus

@@theexpatriate Yeah, the level order issue is always one of the most challenging parts of multiclassing for me. I think it's basically impossible to say right now since we don't know the full extent of the changes Larian has made to the Monk. During the class showcase, they mentioned a new ability called "Shadow Strike", and it's not clear where that fits in (is it truly an additional ability, or a replacement for Shadow Step that folds in an attack a la Backstab from DOS2? if so, can it be used out of combat?).
