YOU DID IT!!! Good for you!! My starter is 12 years old so I've been at this awhile, just a few tips. Don't put the discard down the drain or any flour/water mixture. Remember that glue you were talking about? That's what it can do inside your pipes. Just trash it in the trash can. Go back to the bigger jar, a lot of recipes call for one cup sourdough starter, so you will need more. Now that it's established feed it a cup of flour at a time, it will rise more and you will have enough starter to work with. Use a nice long wooden spoon to feed it, much easier, and then go around the inside of the jar with the spatula to scrape off excess. You can also turn the light on in your oven and just set the starter sit in the oven the warmth from the light will make it rise. Get yourself a bread knife and let the bread sit for 30 minutes or more it still cooks when it comes out of the oven. Then you wont get that gummy part. Every loaf you make will get easier and faster. Also, you can always invest in a bread machine for a dump and go process, I found mine at goodwill. You are on your way!! I have a loaf baking right now.

Oh Kristen, your are too hard on yourself. You have no idea what a blessing you are to so many of us. Most of us fail at our first attempt to try something new. The key is to keep sticking with it until you get it right. Allow yourself a little grace . You are a precious daughter of God and He loves you. You really bring joy to us as we watch you care for your family and your beautiful home.

Farmhouse on Boone has the easiest tutorial on making sourdough. Unbleached flour works best and filtered water. Faucet water usually has to many minerals such as clorine that kills the bacteria needed to make the yeast. You can also save discard to prepare pancakes, bread, cookies etc. Making sourdough takes patience and practice. Don’t get discouraged. Your first loaf of sourdough can out beautiful!

Ivy is adorable!!!! Such a precious helper! My daughter has just begun making sourdough bread in the last month and she discovered that the crust softens as the bread cools. I think some of the moisture from the bread soaked into the crust. I love the denseness (is that a word? 😂) of sourdough bread. She keeps her sourdough discard in a container in the fridge and then uses it in recipes geared for discard. You’re absolutely right… it’s like a science experiment! Bravo on your perseverance and ultimate victory!🎉🎉🎉.

You can try using Bread Flour as the protein is higher; also - placing a rubber band on the jar, at the level the starter is at, right in the beginning, then you can see easier, if it is rising... I just watched a Faux Sourdough method, from "Wyse Guide" on YT; he uses instant yeast and makes what he calls a "POOLISH", the night before... how fun to try all methods and see what works best! Kristen, you could have a whole series on all different yeasts, and breads, etc.! And love your dress! All the best with your new little one, brewing away in there!

Hello Kristen, I have been making fresh baked bread for a while now. I found the quick bread recipe that is so easy to do no sour dough at all. my family loves it. once you mixes 3 cups of flour 1 and 1/2 cups hot water but make sure it's 130 degrees only.1/4 tsp of yeast 1 tsp of salt. mixes it well cover with plastic and a tea towel. for 3 hours that is it. then you preheat your oven on 450 and put your pot with the lid in the oven for 30 minutes and then use a piece of parchment paper. and put the bread in the oven for 30 minutes and then take the lid off and finish cooking for 15 minutes. that is it. so tasty and good. once you let it cool off.I slice the bread and i put in a freezer zip lock bag and put it in the freezer and take it out as you need it . pop it in the toaster or the toaster oven. I got the bread recipe off of Jenny can cook. on KZread. enjoy girl.

I used sourdough about 40 years ago when it was not even trendy. While I liked the results I wasn't crazy about the commitment. You have to feed it, you have to discard excess. Worse of all, when you go on vacation you need to find a friend to babysit it. I prefer to use fresh yeast and flour to bake bread when I'm prepared and wanting to make it.

Kristin you did wonderful!!! It’s not easy getting started in a cold climate. But once you do the sky is the limit. Try waffles and pancakes they are so light and airy. Breads seem to taste so much better than store bought. I did bagels this week and they were amazing, like ones that come from a good deli. You’ll even find that it’s easier for your gut to digest. Which you probably already know. Have fun and keep going😊

My starter is fed with bread flour and filtered water. I never measure or weigh but go by appearance and consistency when feeding my starter. I also use a metal knife to stir. Sourdough is very forgiving and not as difficult as some make it to be. Mine is almost 2 years old and has risen so many loaves of bread that I’ve lost count. Your artisan loaf is beautiful!! Nice crumb too!!👏🏻👏🏻 (Waiting about an hour to slice makes it less gummy in texture)

Either the next day, or the following day it exploded all over the places. When you discard what’s inside, does it stink? Mine stink so bad. My daughter and son in law are coming next month. And I want to make some bread for them. I might just buy a starter from Amazon if this attempt doesn’t work. But I will try again tomorrow afternoon. I have a proofing bowl and maybe a towel or something to go with it. In my pantry. That looks so good. You need a serrated knife to cut bread. I’m really proud of you.

When I feed my sourdough, I like to use distilled water, since I do not have a Berkey.(sp>) this way no impurities are in the water. I also cover my jar with a cloth and secure with a rubber band , to allow it to breathe in the bacteria in the air.

LOL good job! The big differences I do with mine is - I first mix the starter in the bowl with warm water, then add the flour and salt. I let mine sit out overnight on the counter at room temp and it rises good. And then I bake it covered, uncovered then on the rack out of the pot for a few. Then I try my best to let it cool first, it will be even better - though I know it's hard not to cut into it when it's out of the oven. Good luck on loaf number 2!

I made a starter and loaf thanks to this video!!! I had the opposite problem as you. I live in Houston and it’s humid and warm here I swear my starter was bubbly and ready in 2-3 days 😆. My dough is rising now and will refrigerate overnight. Hopefully I have delicious bread before church ⛪️ tomorrow morning!!

It took me 2 months to get my starter going. I started using some whole wheat flour with the white flour and that did the trick. I live in Michigan and my house is just too cold. I started putting it in the oven with the light on and that helped. I use a scale to weight water and flour in grams. But some KZreadrs say it doesn’t matter. I also just made my first artisan loaf and it turned out great! You persevered and did it! My friend freezes her starter in the summer and revives it in the fall since it is hot and a busy time. The discard recipes are bountiful as well!
