Baits, Rigs, Gear, Sheepshead Fishing Tips

Спорт

This video is dedicated to providing tips for catching more Sheepshead, specifically around the jetties. These fish are not resident jetty dwellers all year round. There's a certain time of year when they migrate into the area.
Gear, Rigs and Bait
1. I am fishing with a 2500 size spinning reel that is paired with a 6'-6" rod. The reel is spooled with 15 lb Berkley mono.
2. I use a knocker rig with a number one sized J-hook combined with either a 1/4 or 3/8 ounce slip sinker
3. I've mainly been fishing with live shrimp. If they are small I put the entire shrimp on. If medium sized I break them of the tail third. If the bait is larger I will break it in half.
All of the methods, tricks or special hacks that I do that produce good results are included in this video about catching Sheepshead. I honestly didn't leave anything out that I can think of. I hope that this video helps you catch more fish at the jetties.

Hey JC. What about using bullet weights rather than Barrell weights... Would they get stuck more? can't imagine there is a real difference but hey, you're the one catching all the fish. Thank you.

There are so many rock ledges at the jetties i don't think the style of weight would make much of a difference, might be wrong on that, just never really tried any other type weight.

Thank you JC very informative. For some of the folks that have boats the intercostal bridges and most importantly the Skyway holds very large Sheepshead. My PB was caught at the Skyway and weighed 9 lbs. There are some monsters there. A very old trick is to take a shovel and scrape a bunch of barnacles off the bridge piling. It will chum up the Sheepshead in a hurry. Also, instead of a knocker rig I used to use jig heads different weights depending on the current. I always felt you had a better feel with a jig head, compared to fish finder or knocker rig. There’s some big Sheepshead out there as the state record is around 15lb.

The small tap tap results on bait gone almost everytime for me. I just gently jig my rig until I feel resistance/tap tap then just set the hook. I will agree with you that the bigger sheeps just have harder pull.

Thanks for sharing. I really wish fiddlers were available here. I was thinking about catching some the other day in an area where I just happened to find a bunch last year. The problem though is I couldn't justify the travel time involved, much easier for me to just purchase shrimp. I'll have to ask the local bait shops why they don't sell them.
