Pete Finestone has got to be the most engimatic drummer in the history of music. He has a terrible, inefficient, energy depleting technique, blasting away at the kit, but at the same time he's really good with it and never loses stride. It fits perfectly with the early BR sound and he's extremely fun to watch even though he's wearing nothing but his underwear.

Concur. In other words: he was an early punk rock drummer. No technique, only fun. 1989: merely, 5 young guys playin punk hardcore, nothing more nothing less; amateur musicians who loved music, fun and rebellion. I think that any br drummer chimes with any br music era. Finestone, as you say, fits perfectly with early br. No better drummer for br style in those years than pete. 😉

I really like all of their albums and manymany of their songs! But the stuff they played with Finestone is the sound I got into punkrock with. Brooks was a beast and I like his drumming a lot, and also Jamie is a great drummer to me. But Finestone defined the sound of BR to me! I still don't like Bobby's sound, though. Technically most probably a super drummer, but I didn't like the sound. He destroyed it for me. IMHO! Not wanting to start a fight here! If you liked Bobby, it's perfectly fine for me! Enjoy! Anyway! Still glad those guys are still around and I really enjoyed that video! Thanks for sharing!

Reading the book, found out that Pete became their drummer cuz he was just a friend who loaded their equipment and kinda stepped up to the plate when there was a vacancy. It’s kind of odd to think of Graffin and how he is perceived being an academic and all, but when it came to the band, he was always just like “no come on man it’ll be fine” (Pete becoming drummer, John Albert becoming drummer, convincing Brett to play shows pre-Suffer, Mike Dimkich joining)

@@aWhimTestedI think that comes from the fact that they all probably though that at the end of the day, Bad Religion pre Suffer (and throughout its run too) was just a side thing that was fun as hell to do. Basically, a hobby. Just like after a long day of work one will come back home to play an instrument, video games, etc. Even on the Along the Way DVD Pete says "after this I'll probably try and find a real job", to put in perspective how they were all in BR as a side project instead of their main source of income. I remember seeing on an old interview (maybe ATG or Generator era?) that they all thought that the European Suffer Tour was the best the band would ever get popularity-wise and that they would probably make zero money out of it and before that, if it was even worth it to go through the hassle of flying over to Europe to play a few gigs. Then they thought "hey, who gives a shit? Why not just go and have fun?" and it was a massive success, then they make No Control, ATG, Generator, Punk Rock gets super popular in the 90s, and history is made.

he'd still do it but it's really bad for your throat, and he wouldn't be singing as well now if he kept doing it through the 2000s. Personally I think the against the grain era had his most balanced vocals, but that's just me.

I was at this show. I hadn't heard Bad Religion before that night, we just went to every punkrock gig in those days. If I remember correctly 'Suffer' wasn't even released in Belgium at that time and there were probably about fifty people that night. I was a big Circle Jerks fan back than and remember thinking 'I know that guitarplayer from somewhere' :-)
