Had a potential customer contact me and inquire about IBM service or reconditioned IBM selectrics. I talked to them a while about all the options, then they went a purchased this machine from out of state. Very frustrating . . . . .
BTW I also found impression cable and mechanism under carrier broken, c-clip missing from correction drive arm, you can see it in video, loose debris, feed rollers dirty and many other items in need of attention.....

You sir, are the foremost authority on the Selectric in my opinion. Your videos and help was invaluable in helping me fix my Selectric 1.

I agree I trust you to fix my moms selectric. Lovely machine that got us all through college during pre desktop computing days.

I was lucky. I purchased the exact Selectric II, blue, WITH dual pitch off Ebay for $125 shipped. It arrived undamaged and only needed two minor things that cost less than $10 in parts to fix. The hub is not cracked and the belt looks good as well. Overall, it is a clean, well cared for machine. As I said, I got lucky. Most on Ebay are as bad or worse than this machine.

I was going to say they were penny wise and pound foolish, but since they paid the same amount they would have paid for a quality machine from you semi-locally, they were just foolish.

why didn't they return and report seller? I know this repair and service is money for you but you sound like a rare species, a honest skilled person who takes great pride in their work and hates that a customer has been cheated out of their money for the same amount as it would have cost them if bought from you. Plus I'm sure you give a guarantee. People get silly sometimes on ebay and don't take into account the delivery cost.

I told them to do that virtually immediately, I think they think they were stuck. I also told them they should send the bill to seller for reimbursement, they didn't want to do that either. I have had some places contract with me to repair their typewriters they sold and were received broken before, not too uncommon.

@@phoenixtypewriter2136 just shows that you have a very good reputation but there is a massive difference between delivery damage and misrepresentation of an items condition. People also are getting flummoxed buy the "Sold as seen" , thinking that they have no recourse but the description is a part of a legal declaration. Anyway do you have any recommendations for a good model for a dyslexic? Computers have their uses but I find them too distracting but I thought they were the only option until I found your channel quite by accident, any help would be gratefully received.

I am trying to clean and repair a machine like that to sell, what should I watch out for so I don’t make the same mistakes? I consider you and expert on these machines and would like some expert advice. Thanks in advance.

The 40 year old coagulated oil will be #1 stumbling block, followed by parts that are failing due to age. Took me 10 years to become proficient at repairing IBM selectrics and 30 yrs to become an expert. Now that all the age related problems have begun, It's a whole new learning curve, way beyond explaining things with a few words or video's.

The only mechanical issues it has right now is a ruined motor belt, and. You did a video on that (it’s very help duo by the way, thanks!) is it best to clean out the oil and grease and replace it? If so, what kind of grease and oils do you recommend?

Yes, all that old oil is coagulated and sticking or will be sticking, IBM #10 oil = 0W30 Mobil 1 synthetic oil , I also use marvel mystery oil (red) IBM #23 grease = Mobilgrease #28 Aero Grease

If you dont recondition it yourself how can you be sure it was done properly or at all. anyone can buy a typewriter and clean it then sell it as working, but that does not mean it was reconditioned. It is cleaned and possibly adjusted. Hopefully they knew what they were doing and actually did it. Some people buy cheap ones broken and fix them, but this is even a risk because you never really know whats wrong until you get into it.

That's very frustrating you think they would have been smart enough to buy local or even to get their own fixed for the same price

Fedex , watch packing video's, What are you sending ? IBM selectrics rarely survive shipping without damage Best to contact me thru phone or email, youtube has limitations

Looks like all the reconditioning that was done was to clean the dust covers, keys, and case lol I didn't have my sound on so that might have been covered. This is like running a 40 year old work truck through a car wash and calling it a day.

It really is baffling why someone would buy a Selectric online, when there's a reputable and skilled person they can turn to with several machines available. Maybe they were too lazy to drive to Phoenix. Or they like gambling! They made a good decision to have you fix the blue Selectric.
