I think it's not controversial to say that Zootopia hasn't aged well; the first, dystopic version of the movie from Nick's PoV would've been a better, more resonant film given America's own descent into fascism (starting in red states like Florida and Texas), but the creators were too scared to go through with it and chose easy, marketable #girlboss white feminism instead.

@@Rosemont104 ...Wait what? I would say that's extremely controversial! That original version dealt with the subject of slavery. Do you really think that would be a good allegory for our times? Where the enslaved are dangerous predators? ...Wow. Also, a bunny wanting to become a cop in a world dominated by predators is just a much more interesting premise for a Disney movie. Her gender was never presented as a big deal.

The immediate idea I had was that the bad guys were animals because they're "inhumane" to society, that they're so evil people don't see them as human. I think it's clever and shouldn't be overthought

I certainly agree with that outlook but it also begs the question as to why society loves Diane Foxington so much? Mr. Marmalade I can understand, he's an adorable little animal, but foxes are usually seen as sneaky and untrustworthy yet she was elected as governor seemingly without any trouble. It's certainly one of the aspects of the movie that I wish they had gone into a little more depth with but overall it was still a really good movie

Also many of the stereotypes about the animals (sharks, snakes, foxes, guinea pigs, etc.) were created by humans. I doubt it was an accident that both the police and news correspondent were depicted as humans. Additionally - to build off the point made by @Ivana Čurná, Diane was only recently elected and the Golden Dolphin award celebration would be one of the first major public events, hence the concern with the celebration going well.

Megamind was a masterpiece. Emotional, mature, hallarious, and a deep insight into how "Incel culture" can and will corrupt someone into a true villain. It's so subversive too. The bad guy actually WINS, but then becomes depressed after there's nothing to do after he has everything, as his epic battles with Metro Man gave him purpose. He then tries to artificially create a new superhero to fight against, but then he turns out to be a villain even worse than him. So now Megamind has to be a hero once in his life to fix everything. Such a good movie, and taught me an important life lesson as a kid that even when you have everything you could ever want that won't garentee you happiness. Sometimes it's the journey to your goals, not the destination, that provides true happiness.

To be honest, diane foxington from the bad guys is like spamton from deltarune chapter 2 because they both wear glasses and they both make deals and i think i remember the fox girl say now's your chance to redeem yourselves like how spamton says now's your chance to be a big shot. When wolf talked to the fox girl on the stairs it reminded me of the original spamton fight in deltarune and when the fox girl was reavealed to be the crimson paw, it reminded me of spamton neo. Instead of rescuing wolf and the gang, i was expecting the fox girl to fight them instead and have wolf's soul turn yellow and be able to shoot things and wolf and the gang will be in minecarts and the fox girl wants to take wolf's body as a vessal and says he doesn't need his freinds. Wolf and the gang can either beat the fox girl up or break her strings and then they get an item and a shadow crystal and also marmalade is also kinda like queen since they're both selfish. Could someone please do a YTPMV of now's your chance to be a big shot where the fox girl sings now's your chance to be a big shot and also with sounds from the movie as the melody of the music. Since matpat did a ness is sans theory, i could also see him do a diane foxington is spamton theory. So at the end of the day, the fox girl from the bad guys is like a female version of spamton from deltarune.

The bad guys movie is pretty different from the books they came from. I love both adaptations and I think it's fun to compare the two, especially with characters. In the books the plot revolves around mr wolf being tired of being bad and seeks out the other 3 and convinced them to make a good guys club. But its turns out all of their good deeds are actually just crimes that have been warped to sound good, for example their first heist in the book involves them "saving a bunch of sad puppies from a bad home" when in reality they're breaking a lot of convicted dog criminals out of prison. Also in the books theres a LOT more animal background characters who are scared of the main 5 like everyone else. Character wise in the books, mr wolf is insane and happy, but still has those scary moments, it's very funny to watch. For mr shark, snake, and piranha they are are pretty similar personality wise, usually actually as the straight men to wolf's chaos, they do get their own bit of character development though. Also ms. Tarantula is a boy in the books, their personality plays a lot into that nerdy hacker kinda character. Him and mr shark also have their own little arc which I think is very cute ANYWAYS yeah plot twist this was actually a sales pitch and I'm now sending the entire book series to your door via missile. (In all seriousness though the books are very goofy and fun, I'd reccomend yall check them out) Also fun fact in the books mr wolf canonically enjoys cosplaying as a grandma

My favorite parts of this movie were Snake’s little character arc, and how much chemistry Diane and Wolf had right off the bat! Also the good message about doing something right for the sake of wanting to do it, and not for publicity. Though Wolf was just trying to keep up a good rep at the start, at any point necessary, he would stop whatever he was doing to help someone without even thinking. THAT’S real kindness. And the difference between KNOWING you’re a bad person and sticking with it, and PRETENDING you’re nice while being a shitty person and manipulating people’s hearts, instead of just revealing it and getting on with your day, like the Bad Guys did at the start. They were GOOD at being bad! It reminds me of Mean Girls, with Janice and Regina. How most people are just shady, but at least they KNOW who they are, and have nothing to hide. Might not be something new, but it was damn heartwarming, and immediately set up the Bad Guys as likable characters with redemption arcs that made sense from the start. And I love how intentionally cringe they made Marmalade’s “Just find that blossom of goodness” lines, because they’re SO accurate to celebrities today after they do something shitty. But he KNOWS that he doesn’t have to do much to make people adore him! That makes him very interesting. But just like with Turning Red and Encanto, I wanted MORE!! More character interactions, more backstory! But that’ll always be the case with good things, I suppose. At least that means there’ll be some FANSERVICE, I hope! Also, I immediately recognized Sisu’s voice actress from Raya with Webs. She did great!

From what I can understand, it's more that certain people on the internet made the bean mouths the... "representative" if you will, of all the ills of modern animation they dispose. A move away from the pseudo-realism of older Disney movies and 80's cartoons, a bigger focus on animated figures MOVING in wacky, squash and stretchy ways, an overall increase in chaos over the more stiff, but detailed style of, say, 2002 He-Man and the Thundercats show that was, I think, also from the early 00's? Basically cartoons are being more "cartoony" now than before- and I would of course be remiss if I didn't mention that there's ALSO the fact that modern cartoons increasingly feature themes of exploring social justice, historical IN-justice and LGTBQ+ stuff. The people who get mad at the latter would probably be mad even if the lesbian cartoons looked like 80's TMNT and 80's he-man (get the sniggering out of your system now...), but since the visual shift occured about the same time as the content shift, it's become an easy shorthand to point to for people who are basically mad that times are changing. "Bean mouth-criticism" is basically "modern BAD-criticism" but masqueraded. It doesn't necessarily HAVE to mean the complainer is a bigot, some people just don't jive with looser, zanier animation over more detailed realistic stuff, but I've sadly seen so much overlap between those two groups that I presume those complaining are mad about both things, until proven otherwise.

Okay the bean mouth thing just because some people are bringing it up. It's not a bad design, it's nice, it's cartoony and it suits this movie. But I think the problem people have is that it feels like it's being overused and it's resulting in a lot of current animation looking too similar. Yes different shows/movies in the past looked similar but that was usually because they were movies made by the same studio or shows drawn/created by the same artist. The bean mouth/cal arts style thing gets criticism because the reason it's so prevalent is because it feels like companies are looking at shows like gumball and saying that's popular make out new shows look like that even when it doesn't fit specific shows and it's even more noticeable when its happening in established franchises. Case in point that new Thundercats thing a bit ago and the Ben 10 reboot went from action anime inspired artstyles to bean mouth style or something similar. The Bean mouth style is a good design but it shouldn't feel like the only design out there and shows/movies should have artstyles should reflect there story. The Bad Guys looks awesome and it's artstyle is perfect.

Chris Pratt had been "cancelled" like, 10 times on Twitter over minor crap yet he's never been banned or ostrasized from anything. Terrible, awful people like Jeffery Epstein and Bill Cosby got away with their crimes for YEARS while everyone in the know knew, and countless other major elites have been exposed but nothing has been done about it. Meanwhile it seems like a false allegation gets put forward against some major KZreadr every month and 9/10 times it ends up completely false or taken out of context/exadurated. Sometimes the allegations are completely true like with LionMaker, Cosmodore, etc and other times they're completely bull like with ProJared, Pyrocynical, Mangs, CallMeCarson, etc. Even Hollywood celebrities like Johnny Depp are not immune to these false allegations from spiteful exes. Big celebrities like JK Rowling or CEOs like Jeff Bezos and Bobby Kotik can just get away with all the crimes they commit because they have money and power. The shark being a master of duisguise. Snake having sclothing on under his shed skin. The parana stealing a catering uniform from a human caterer and it fitting. Like its fucking hilarious i love that it doesnt makea sense and thats the joke

I think why the villain here works well is because they don't try to make it this big plot twist and hide his villainy. The opposite, he kept putting out these vibes that he wasn't what he seemed, so when the twist came you weren't surprised, but it felt satisfying cause you were betting on it happening the whole time.

In fact, watching with the answers known allows one to see the forest for the trees as a story of wisdom passed down from one to another.

Never forget...these guys ate people in the past. And we are not told they got out of it okay. That is a thing they did, and the world is willing to forgive them for, apparently. I was also shocked that Foxington didn't get more backlash for her abilities and setup, but I think the fact that she had ONE trophy for all she'd done, that diamond, and seemed to be unhappy as a criminal type deeds as she was alone, whereas the Team was actually pretty chill, and had a nice nest egg of stolen goodies, along with having actual fun times and enjoying themselves mitigated it. Also, her skills did not come from nowhere, and were built up throughout the movie, something that a LOT of other works using that trope seem to forget to do.

Maybe look at the animals being the only ones in a human world like you would animals in fairy tales? That's the vibe I'm getting from the trailers. Of course I'd love to see more animals in their own society and what that could do for the story, like Beastars and Zootopia (less Sing since being animals was superficial. I still prefer that over humans because I'm obviously biased lol). But more animal characters could take away from the focus from the main cast so it's fine.

This situation feels like the same feud years ago when Disney and Dreamworks had with A Bug’s Life and AntZ, only this time, it’s not about the plot or the premise, but instead the animation. Turning Red was a fine movie, but the animation was great, especially with the expressions. I just believe The Bad Guys had a style best suited for the animation to feel more natural. For The Bad Guys, it looked like it blended well together, as in, the 2D elements fit naturally with the 3D. In Turning Red, it looked like the 2D parts for the eye expressions were a last minute decision, given it feels slightly out of place and overdone.

I completely agree with your commentary here! I also am just glad to see Bad Guys getting such positive reception, because I too absolutely love the visual style and considering it’s the directors DEBUT film, that is an absolutely incredible achievement. Also another thing I wanted to touch on is, even if the film doesn’t necessarily explain it, I really appreciated how the film takes place in a setting where anthropomorphic animals and humans both run society, together. I really can’t think of any other recent films that can provide me with a setting like this (since usually in a family film, the setting will be run entirely by humans, and then there will be a few talking animals who enter that world.) This movie doesn’t do that, and it’s so refreshing to see: a film where they don’t take time to have humans react to the talking animals because instead they are just seen as common place. I really would love to see more movies in the future to this, it’s so great.

I love this movie. There is so much style, so much class. The story is so fun, and just like the director said "is both stupid and cool" I am quickly becoming a fan, and I hope to see more of it. I love the characters, especially Wolf. His main relationships, with both Diane and Snake are the highlight of the movie, and it can be explore in many different ways: it can talk about toxic relationships, dependency, the desire to want to do better but fear of losing what you have. Everything was tackled in the movie, but it can be explore deeper. Also, I gotta say I was very confused why they didn't made every character into animals. I mean, they are all Animals in the books, so not on the movie? I guess they didn't want to be compared to Zootopia anymore that they already were, but it did made things confusing. Nothing that breaks the experience for sure Also also, DianexWolf.... Best ship. So cute, so much chemistry, so fun! I don't get comparing this movie to "Zootopia" considering the only thing they really share is having anthro characters as the main leads. Also Zootopia is still a great movie! Second the "bean mouth" thing doesn't bother me in this movie because it's only a small part of the style of the movie. Every other visual aspect is great, and the only time the mouths look weird is with some of the background characters (which considering they're not on screen a lot nor in focus means it's really a non issue). It actually fixes my complaint with it in "Turning Red" which was similar design philosophy but the while the 2D/3D integration felt off at many moments, in "The Bad Guys" they blend perfectly. Finally, Diane doesn't get flack because she's well written and put on an equal level as Mr. Wolf. Sure she has moments of being "the best" but she also has her own flaws and doesn't overshadow the main characters where it counts.
