    I didn't know it was a reference either when I was a kid but still managed to find it funny. I think it's either because my parents got a big laugh out of it or because of Buzz's "NOOOOOOO!" being over the top. Most likely a mix of both.

    “Toy Story 2” has a bit more historical significance, if you think about it. Most animated sequels would be released DTV with the type of cheap budget expected from films of that caliber. But the fact that Pixar had the audacity to continue production and think on a grander, cinematic scale is a testament to how the studio was willing to push boundaries. “TS2” not only solidified Pixar as an innovation-driven, critically lauded titan of the computer animation industry, but assured audiences that Pixar was no one-hit-wonder. They had future staying power and would set a standard for animated sequels to live up to. If there were any movies to nominate for the National Film Registry’s selections, “Toy Story 2” would be my pick.

    I love both movies pretty much equally, but at the end of the day, I'm a sucker for the side characters interacting, and by separating woody from the gang at the get go in 2, forces these side characters to interact and this is where their personality's really shine through. Prospector's "wise old man" eske wisdom, T-Rex and his obsession with video games, Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head's relationship and adopting children into their family, the goodbye scene from the rooftop to buzz and his gang to go save woody, Jessie's energetic nature and so much more. Being able to see all of the characters react in their own ways to the same reaction made it feel more fun and enjoyable overall.

  • @jaschabull2365

    @jaschabull2365

    I've got to say, I kind of liked the side characters' performances in the first the best, largely because Woody spends a bit more time with them - each of them kind of embody a different reaction to authority from the bitter, resentful Potatohead to the loyal, devoted Slinky, to the kind of cynical jiber, Hamm to the spinelessly yielding Rex. Beyond that, they basically got reduced to party-members who each contribute their own special skills, which, don't get me wrong, was tons of fun, but 1 pretty uniquely had something interesting in the characters' personalities by not having them always all on the same page. And then in the 4th, they were basically reduced to a peanut gallery. Le sigh.

Who likes a video where it’s all one sided? Edit: I like 3 a bit more than 2. I think 2 & 3 are the best of the franchise but I think 3 just had a more exciting ending on top of it being an emotional conclusion for Andy’s story. 2 is also very good and better at the emotional level than 3 but 3’s ending just hit home for me more ultimately.

TS4 in the other hand spends a /lot/ of time examining many different aspects of being a toy without an owner)

    To me, Toy Story 2 has always been subjectively and objectively the better movie. Both have great cohesion and themes, but Toy Story 2 tackles them a bit better. I don't think it's that controversial actually. I think people just think about the ending of 3, and though it is a very good scene, they don't really judge the rest of the film. By all means, Toy Story 3 is still one of the best Pixar films. It still tackles the questions it tries to handle very well. But Toy Story 2, raises those questions in a higher and more respective regard, and overall makes the morals of this movie subtle, but excellent. Also, Toy Story 2 made a more general impact on me than 3. I feel like Jessie's song is still better than 3's ending, though to be honest, by a sliver. The Prospector, in my opinion, is better than Waternoose, the Prospector's plans are already clearly revealed at the start, but at the willingness, he puts towards that goal, makes him a more menacing villain. Toy Story 2, though not my favorite Pixar movie (that being the Incredibles), has been the one that has had the most emotional resonance with me, and has stuck with me the longest. Toy Story 3, I feel, is a bit better with pacing, though 2 is still really good with its pacing too. My personal ranking would be: 1. 2 2. 3 3. 4 4. 1 But thank you for making this video Cellspex. Really entertaining.

    This movie still has a warm place In my heart, especially Jessie's Song and truly miss my childhood at times. Why I still wish they could've made an actual animated series of Woody's Roundup while eating my favourite bowl of Cowboy Crunchies! Xp Did ya also know that some of the Instrumental Inspired The Loud House's usual Instrumentals during Lincoln and his sisters' usual schemes and shenanigans, every time y'hear that violin play, cause I can't be the only one! Forgot to also mentioned this In my Toy Story 4's review that; even If Bo herself would truly risked her own life jsut to save Woody or almost went head to head with Buzz just alittle what difference would It make for her to still stand out to be her own Femme Fatale of the gang we know today or an alternative scene were she actually could've got broken differently without the whole "being separate" thing. I could jsut be me or thought differently as a kid cause I really did love Bo as a kid and moved on ever since but doesn't mean she still deserved alittle better back then In my opinion anyway.

    Honestly, I really don't like Bo Peep in Toy Story 4. She's super cynical and snarky, and pretty much mean to Woody the whole time until the end when she finally decides to like him after he pretty much gives up his religion and abandons his family for her. I don't mind the idea of her being mean itself, as it has that snarky edge that Woody has in the first film and sort of in 2, but it makes her seem really annoying and ungrateful, and feels out of character for her based on her role in the first two. Even if she became more independent, it doesn't feel like she would just become a jerk like that. And they didn't even have her character grow over the years and years she was out of the picture, they made her just as tough and decisive in the flashback, instead of being meek and letting her journey change her.

    The “gods” reading has always been a mostly stupid way of interpreting these movies. While some points can be argued pretty well, the movies themselves have always been about attachment. Be aware, that these are how I see them: 1st movie is about putting your relationship with someone you care about above others relationships with that same person. The 2nd one is about the fear of abandonment, and if you should give up on something just because it will eventually end. The 3rd one feels like a mixture of 2’s theme with the added benefit that it will end, and soon. I think it’s more about coming to terms with things, though. Like how Lotso never came to terms with the fact that his owner genuinely loved him, and that she never meant to leave them. It’s a plot mirror to how the toys assumed they were already thrown out, and moved on without letting Andy move on, which left them all upset.

    TS2 was the first movie I ever saw in a theater when I was almost five years old, by the time TS3 came out my sister was finishing high school and on her way to college so 3 was significant at the time in our family. Too bad the same can't be said when my time came to transition to college and I got Monsters University. 2 was lightning in a bottle, it probably helped that that Pixar spent only a year reworking the film to make it the best it could be. I could easily watch 1 & 2 back to back and love both equally. I can't quite say the same about 3 and especially 4. So I would rank the series 2,1,3,4. TS4 is by no means terrible, but it ruined 3's perfect ending and made the shorts and specials after 3 pointless. If people like Animat can enjoy 4 on the same level, good on them. I'm glad they found enjoyment. For me, the last Toy Story was the special The Toy Story Time Forgot. So overall, TS2 FTW.

I remember we had a couple of Toy Story, well, toys that my mum and my siblings and I felt very nostalgic towards since we loved the movies when we were younger and I used to bring my Jessie doll mostly everywhere I went for awhile. My mum never could bring herself to donate them until recently since my dad likes clearing out anything that we didn’t use or play with anymore, mainly trying to keep the house clean, and my mum just thought it was time for them to go. (Or she sent them down to my younger cousins, can’t remember.) I don’t think the whole ‘growing up’ thing has to mean you have to get rid of your old toys and games and basically everything from your childhood just because you’re becoming an adult. I appreciate these arguments, and can totally understand them. For me, TS3 still wins though, all things considered. The darker tone; the flip of Sunnyside going from this bright, welcoming place to an oppressive, hostile one; the homage to prison escape films; and of course, the pitch-perfect emotional conclusion to wrap up both the movie AND the trilogy are elements that are all so wonderfully brilliant and creatively executed to me. TS3 is one of those animated movies that does everything I love most in animation: it doesn’t talk down to kids by assuming they can’t handle mature emotional subjects or intense moments; it is very enjoyable for adults BECAUSE it is more mature; and it employs solid cinematic craftsmanship, by way of good directing and writing, to deliver its story in the most effective way. In other words, it elevates itself beyond the standard notion of animation as “kids’ fare,” and just tries to be a great film that can stand alongside any acclaimed live-action movie. The Incredibles and Ratatouille do this, and that’s why they’re my other favorite animated movies. TS3 does the same: it doesn’t just try to be a great “animated,” film, it tries to be a great film, period.

    I wouldn't have thought that this would be a controversial opinion. To me, Toy story 2 and 3 are the gems of the series, and it would be very difficult for me to pick one over the other. They are both amamzing films imo. Toy Story 3 gets me in the feels more, but I also found myself very interested in the plot of Toy story 2 throughout the entire movie despite the fact it didn't really get me on the edge of my seat, whereas Toy Story 3 has some parts I found less engaging that just needed to be there to support later parts of the film. Not gonna lie, Jessie's backstory never really gripped me, but I think I liked Toy Story 2 so much still because that was when the characters really started to feel like very likeable and real people. My hot take tho, I appreciate that the spectacle of it at the time is a thing, but I really think Toy Story 1 is a very... eh... film. I found just about everyone except Slinky far less likeable and interesting as characters, especially compared to 2. I haven't seen 4, so I can't make a judgement about it, but from what I've heard it sounds ok.

    I actually really enjoyed this comparison format! Have you thought about doing this style of videos for other series? (HTTYD, Shrek, etc.)

    I’ve always preferred 2. 3 kind of feels like a retread of parts of 2. I really like Jessie and the Prospector. I find him more intimidating than Lotso 😂 But also I really like Barbie and Ken in Toy Story 3. Maybe it’s just my bias because I’m a collector and loved all the references, but I thought they were a really cute duo and were super funny.

    I have a weird history with the Toy Story series. I watched the first one as a kid in school and I (as well as anyone I knew) liked it. I watched Toy Story 2 and liked it but I didn't own a DVD copy so I didn't see again for years. The movie was good enough that I remembered the highlights (particularly the I am your Father Joke because I was and still am a huge Star Wars nerd) but there was a lot of stuff in the movie I forgot about which I think is why I never connected with it as much as everyone else did. Toy Story 3 I enjoyed just like the other movies but what I think was important was that it was the only one in the series my family had on DVD so I could watch it and enjoy it a lot more. And yeah the ending was bittersweet. So, anyway, I've always preferred 3 over 2 but I think it was just because I watched and therefore connected with 3 a lot more than 2. I recently watched 2 again on Disneyplus and definitely appreciated it a lot more than I did when I was younger. Just for the record, I was born in the early 2000s and I didn't see any of the Toys Story movies in theatres so I think that also effected how much I enjoyed the movies.

    I love how you lost it reacting to the Toy Story 2 optional craziness. It hit home. And totally agree that part 2 is the magnum opus for the Toy Story movies.

    why would anyone feel the need to complain that the incredibles wasn't high enough on the pixar list when it was literally 3rd? the incredibles would be my number 1 pick but I'm not complaining. some people really need to grow up.
