Me too. Not because they gave her a backstory, but because the backstort seemed too rushed. Like, her mom being knocked off a cliff by dalmations? That was the prologue, and all it did was make me wonder "why the hell didn't she run away?" I appreciate them having her embrqce her inner evil unlike they did with Maleficent, but even that comes with some problems. And the main problem I have is that... Estella is way too awesome to be the same Cruella from the animated movie or even the live action one. Cruella was either a graceless monster who got her car wrecked, or whom barn animals got the better of before driving her insane. Estella got the better of an aristocrat with her fashion and theatrics. I will not deny that the presentation is amazing in this movie, and it really comes back to the potential this movie would have as a standalone film without the convoluted twists dragging it down to Hell like... a DeVil, as it were.

Seeing Maleifcent as a child, I liked it for not being a really old Disney movie (I had something against the audio, don't ask). I thought it amazing, and a perfect Sleeping Beauty movie. And for a however year old kid, that was fine. I think it's an ok movie now, but I don't praise it as highly. Seeing Cruella as a teenager, I agree with the original character idea. I actually liked the less action and more dialog in this movie, and it was pretty refreshing to not have loud music and fight scenes every half hour. As a 101 Dalmatians prequel, it's just alright. As a movie on it's own, I think it's pretty great.

Honestly you’re right, I mean maybe if it gets a sequel she could eventually actually become the myth or more of try to become a puppy killer, but fails once the Dalmatians trumpet over her, but still it seems Cruella just doesn’t care whatever the public thinks about her, just those who are close to her(Horace and Jesper, oh and probably that dress shop keeper too since she needed his help for later in the film). I kinda had a theory that the reason she didn’t kill her mother’s Dalmatians was because of two reasons 1.She didn’t want Horace and Jesper to leave her side because they’re both dog lovers and even Horace gotten close to the Dalmatians. Or 2. She decided it wasn’t the Dalmatians fault her adoptive mother died because it was her real mother that cause them to rush over to attack her.

Fun fact: in the original book, Cruella had a cat, and instead of having the cat spayed, she'd just drown the litters of kittens. 8:46 Cruella and Anita had known each other since they were kids, and sometimes Cruella would turn up and act all spoiled and derisive, especially towards Anita's lowly musician husband Roger. He was simply exaggerating to make fun of how obnoxious she could be, and because he's a song writer: "in song form!" It's an old dynamic that we've seen a million times.

If Cruella was as big of a monster as you think she is, she would have killed the puppies herself. That's what my mother believes, and I could agree with her when looking back on this movie. Cruella’s initial character in both the film and the original book was inspired by actress Tallulah Bankhead- the laugh, calling everyone “darling,” and her overall mannerisms very much mimic Tallulah’s. The bit on TV where she sees the laugh is a clip of Tallulah in the Alfred Hitchcock movie Lifeboat. So in that one at least there was some thought behind it,

For example, I believe that Cruella will be the Cruella from the animation. Slowly going mad over time until she becomes a her own twisted version of the baroness. My girlfriend thought that this Cruella was slowly getting better citing the people around her that propelled her to do better rather than before were everyone around her did nothing but feed her ego. I like both versions and it's a testament that this movie could make you think about it's lead character far more than any other Disney live action remake.

Cruella isn't a remake in my opinion. It's a standalone story. A prequel to the original 101 Dalmations, if you will. I believe Disney Live-Action stories that don't copy an original story are good movies. I know this is rather unpopular, but I actually enjoy the first Alice in Wonderland Live Action movie. It's not about Alice as a child, but rather as an adult revisiting the world (unsure about the second, as I haven't seen it). Cruella is it's own standalone story and I honestly love it.

Prequels are not standalone by definition. They are meant to lead into the originals. Your Alice in Wonderland example further contradicts your thesis because it's a sequel not a standalone.

I think the issue that Cruela suffers with most is that it’s ideas feel like a contradiction of themselves. It wants to be its own thing and be separate from the original continuity, yet it constantly parades references and symbols of the original Dalmatians movie over and over again, and the ending would imply that it’s still part of the same type of universe as 101 Dalmatians, so which is it? It does seem like someone who started this did actually want to try, but the studio wanted all of these ties back to the original to nostalgia-bait the audience.

More so than making her a dog lover instead of a dog hater, I got the feeling that OG Cruella just...didn't care. animals were just things, she didn't love them or hate them, she just saw them as things. Which is kind of more villainous, at least compared to this movie, because the movie went out of its way to give her a dalmation related backstory. Before, she just didn't care about animals at all. I'm glad this movie was fun, because at least it sidesteps the crimes of a lot of the other live-action-re-somethings-of-OG-animated-movies in being fun, and making her the heartless monster she was originally probably wouldn't have been very fun, but them going out of their way to make her entire life revolve around dalmations was a bit too much, imo.

The sound of the truck horn when Cruella honks at the jail is the same sound as her car horn in the animated feature. Horace compares dog owners looking like their dogs in the same way that Pongo does in 101 Dalmatians (1961). Emma Stone was not allowed to portray Cruella smoking as she had previously been since Disney had banned characters being shown smoking in its films since 2007. Despite being an English character, Cruella de Vil has never been played by an English actress. Every actress has been American with two exceptions. Victoria Smurfit who played De Vil in Once Upon a Time (2011) is Irish and Michelle Gomez who voiced De Vil on 101 Dalmatian Street (2018) is Scottish. Nicole Kidman, Charlize Theron, Emma Thompson, Julianne Moore, and Demi Moore were all in the running to play the role of Baroness von Hellman. Eventually, Thompson ended up taking the part of the Baroness. Like many subtle references in the movie to its original source material, young Cruella's blots on her permanent record resemble Dalmatian spots. The first film in the 101 Dalmatians series not to receive a G rating from the MPAA. The Baroness von Hellman played by Emma Thompson is a German title not a English title. Her character was inspired by the evil Baroness Galiana von Chatouiller from The Enchanted kingdom of Sir Thomas Tattletale (2017) The dog-loving Cruella DeVil is played by Emma Stone, who in the beginning of her acting career voiced a dog in The Suite Life of Zack & Cody: Crushed (2006). This is the third live action adaptation from the 101 Dalmatians franchise, and the first to be a prequel. Emma Stone is only 5 years younger than her character's adopted mother (Emily Beecham) and 30 years younger than her character's birth mother (Emma Thompson). When Cruella reads her birth certificate, it reveals her birthday is August 7th 1952. Estella last name appears on an offer letter from Liberty. It was addressed to Estella Miller. This film marks Emma Stone's second time using a British accent, after The Favourite (2018).

If Disney had made this back in the '90's and released it via Touchstone, then we could have gotten something really cool out of it. Throughout the whole thing, I could feel the director just aching to make something a little darker, a little more twisted, really leaning into the crime-movie, birth-of-a-monster vibe that we kept getting so close to - and if this was made back before Disney lost its BALLS (sorry, but it's true), we might have gotten that. I could see a '90's Cruella origin going into some truly twisted places - you can bet she would have smoked, for starters, and probably developed a complex about dogs right from the beginning, instead of just implying she might at some point. That Cruella would never have had that 'you're my family' moment; she would have blackmailed Horace and Jasper and they'd have had to grimly accept that this was their life now. That Cruella probably WOULD have killed the Baroness, maybe by turning her own dogs on her. That Cruella only exists in my head - but it's fun speculating. (Also, am I the only person who thinks this Cruella may also have a bit of Madame Medusa from 'The Rescuers' thrown into her makeup? It makes sense; Medusa was originally going to be her, anyway - and in some ways, I see more of her in the Cruella character than I do Miss De Vil. Medusa's signature prop is a walking stick, just for starters, just as Cruella's is here, and both of them use it as a weapon for whacking underlings. Also, her signature red dress is mirrored in the one Cruella prominently wears, and she's just generally a lot more hands-on in a way that original-flavor Cruella never was. She was a rich woman who hired goons to do everything for her - Medusa, on the other hand, was a regular woman who desperately wanted to be rich, and was not afraid to get her hands dirty in the process. Substitute 'fashion' for 'great big diamond', and you actually come up with something relatively close to what the current film gives us.)

Instead of remaking the movie beat by beat with insignificant changes, they altered the movie to reflect the live action grit. The cgi blew me away when I first saw it, the actors and actresses did an amazing job, I liked it. One thing that could've made it better is if there were more themes of being human and how they are the most dangerous of Earth's creature. It would've been thematically and emotionally satisfying if Mowgli's arc of self-acceptance ended with him going to the village like in the original.

There is something I never understood about people complaining about the Disney remakes. If they're so similar to the originals, what makes them bad? If nothing is changed why is the older one good but not not the new one? Doesn't thay sort of betray the idea that these things were never good to begin with? Was it purely the animation where the older movies get their merit? Because the plots and scripts are basically copied and pasted from the originals, yet these are the biggest complaints people have. It makes no sense. Maybe Disney movies don't belong in the pop culture, because their merit exists only because of nostalgia, because all of their work is actually vapid and poor.
