I've built flow hoods for laboratory work. The percentage of things that it captures is more of a marketing thing than a tool that you can use to gauge its effectiveness. Bacteria viruses mold spores et cetera all come in different sizes. So if you were to say that it captures 99.9999% of all bacteria you are claiming that it captures most bacteria species because it's filtration is of a tide enough weave that they cannot fit through. But how efficient is it at capturing those particles on one pass through the filter membrane. Yes because it can capture those sizes of particles doesn't mean that it will every time. So you also want to see how efficient it is at performing at those tolerances. In any lab work type proceedings you're gonna let the clean room procedures run for like an hour so that the air that you're scrubbing passes through the filter membrane several times that way if the particles weren't captured on its 1st pass through hopefully it gets captured on its 2nd pass through. It is impossible for any filter to capture all particles going through it on its 1st pass there will inevitably be design problems or other microscopic factors that allow small individual bacteria is to slip through. And it wouldn't be like 56 or a 100 individual bacteria even if you were able to efficiently filter out 99.99% of all of the stuff you would still be allowing millions and millions of individual bacterias to slip through because there's just that many per square inch of ambient air. Filtering water is no different. Like germex it's only claiming to capture that many different species of bacteria Not how efficient it is at doing it just because it can doesn't mean it did on the 1st pass through. I'm just saying.

Enough to give you .001% particulates remaining in the 17 ounce cup I guess lol. Get one of these, get some extremely extremely extremely small and broken down microparticles (I'm not a chemist but if there are microparticles that repel eachother instead of stick to eachother to make larger particulates thatll easily get filtered out, especially under that kind of pressure) and just fill up the cup with it and some water. I'm assuming that you won't really find anything like that in our water but who knows really

There only problem with filters like that is they remove ALL of the minerals that sacrifice make water taste good. Completely clean water actually tastes funny to us. That's why most cities and bottlers add back some minerals after it has been filtered. But in a survival situation that is the least thing on your mind.

I don’t think it’s the best idea to purposefully pollute water with a highly toxic chemical and then drink it even if ‘filtered’. It might filter as claimed, but why would you take the risk that it doesn’t, or if yours is faulty. Actually find a way to chemically test for stuff like that without trying to kill yourself. And no, stuff like that is not already inside you. There are harmless strains of bacteria like E. Coli, but the ones they refer to are not.

I can vouch for Grayl. I bought their first-generation bottle filter before a family trip overseas to the Philippines for my personal use. Rule 1 of overseas travel is pretty much to never anything but bottled drinks to prevent diarrhea. While I have yet to use it for dirty stream water, I used it every day for two weeks taking from family houses' tap water and even from a hotel tap for two days that was using non potable water. I felt completely fine for the entire trip. I bought Grayl's second-generation bottle which improved on some flaws from the first for another trip back to the Philippines. Again, with everyday use from drinking to brushing my teeth, I felt fine, until I drank a drink given to me with unfiltered ice...the next few days were not pleasant...
