It's sub optimal for sure!

You need to touch on backflushing, filter cleaning and costs of filter replacements. Then a lil bit of a warning on not letting them freeze with liquid inside.

I use to use the Sawyer mini but now i rock the hydroblu versa flow with 2 cnoc bags. That allows me to have a push thru and a gravity system in one

Given most through hikers are using the Sawyer Squeeze on a smart water bottle, I was surprised you didn't mention it as a main option. Also you might want to mention the issue with letting your filter freeze. I sleep with mine to keep it warm.

This is a good point. Yeah it would be worth covering the Sawyer filters as they're quite popular. And frozen filters is definitely worth educating people on. I'll do a followup video. Thanks!

Always good to have a plan B. Have the Aquatabs them on hand incase for some reason your pump filter takes a dump.

Sawyer squeeze has worked well for me for many years.

I also use the Sawyer but not the mini version . The regular version provides a much higher flow rate during filtration

Any tips to improve the taste and smell of water. Thank you.

My go to filter system is a gravity filter set up with a 2 stage filtration system. Hollow fiber first stage and activated carbon second stage. Carbon helps improve taste and helps filter out other stuff the hollow fiber won't filter. I started with a hand pump but once I tried a gravity system it's my go to. Minimal work and I can perform other tasks while the water filters into my bottles.

I appreciate your detailed comment. I've used and enjoyed gravity systems too. They are quite good. I meant to include one in this video, but I accidentally didn't pack it to our filming location... because I'm a ding dong.

Wanting to know if you used or can you get a D-Stil lite distillation disc for when you have know choice but get water from a creek within city limits. Can’t find videos on that!!!!

Thanks for this video. Can you go into further detail to show how to actually fill the MSR Dromedary with a filter system identifying the attachments and fittings needed? Can you include some demonstrations of gravity filter systems with attachments as well? Thanks again!

The MSR Guardian has a really nice built in attachment system to a dromedary or Nalgene bottle (which have the same opening and thread). But it's a bit more of a juggle to fill a dromedary without the attachments. At a glance it looks like MSR no longer sells their attachments to connect drom bags to their other filtration systems.What I'll usually do if I'm not using the Guardian but want to fill a drom bag is to fill a nalgene bottle, which stands upright on it's own while I filter, and then pour it into the bag. I can do a gravity filter demonstration in another video. Thanks for asking!

@@BackpackingTV Eric, I'm new to backpacking and earlier this Spring bought the Katadyn Base Camp 10 liter filter to use with my sons. I used it per manufacturer instructions, but the filter clogged after only 4 uses. I would love to use the 10L bag with a different gravity filter into a clean bag. Suggestions?

What are your thoughts on the Sawyer squeeze options?

I feel meh about the Sawyer squeeze. They work! But in my experience they've gotten slow quickly and that really forces me to build that grip strength!

Thank you for sharing this information with us. I really enjoyed it. I have two questions the first, do you know is the mouth of the sea to summit water cells have the same specs that a Nalgene water bottle? In this question what I am driving at is will the MSR Guardian directly attract to the water cell without modification. The second question I have is have you heard? Do you know if it is fact/fiction that when it comes to boiling water one should boil it for one minute at altitudes under ~6,400ft and three minutes or more for altitudes over ~6,400ft due to air pressure allows. If I am understanding the theory right? water to boil at lower temperatures at higher altitudes thus not killing viruses and bacteria. Hints the need for more time. Angin just like to know your thoughts here.

Side note, I used the Sawyer squeeze when I hiked the High Sierra Trail, I since bought a grayl geopress for international travelers and am deeply considering crossing over in to the MSR Guardian as well.

Sawyer micro squeeze screwed on any plastic water bottle. I use 2x 1,5L bottles to allow carrying water for 2 days and if longer carry I add a 2L evernew bladder.

As another option, look at the Steripen - Ultra Water Purifier. It disrupts the DNA in bacteria and viruses making water safe to drink as well.

Always carry a life straw and a sawyer, I have aqua tabs but unless I’m with a group or going off for a few days I wouldn’t use it. I know how to make a filter as well, then I boil it. Always better to have a few options, many have had to been rescued before they didn’t plan for water. That water is much more important then even water. You can go days without food, however in the wrong conditions it could be a few hours to a day till your 🫡. I consider it the most important thing, you can hike with anything and you might be okay, but if you disregard water it could be your last hike, or be prepared to get a expensive flight to the hospital, it’s not expensive but it will save your life!

This is true. Good call. You can tell I primarily use systems that don't involve backflushing. But it's an important technique for getting more life out of your filtration system. I might need to update that for the next set of videos. Thanks!

So only boiling water would be enough? I mean, it's not the simplest choice, but it's the cheapest, so I want to know if that's enough.

Yes! Boiling water is a time tested method of treating water. Just get it to a rolling boil for at least a minute. (some argue 5 minutes)

I only thought about this now... "Over 2 "POUNDS" per "LITER""????? 1 Kilogram per Liter! @ 24c @ sea level. An American Gallon is 3.79L... and 2.2 pounds to the Kilogram... So 3.79Kilogram per Gallon....

serious question here...could you drink your own pee like Kevin Costner in the opening scene of water world with the grayl or would that be too much concentrated filth?

BeFree filter is convenient and works well . And has a good flow rate = faster time to drinking pure water.

Totally. I failed to mention this technique. These are great when the water is very clear. It doesn't remove particles and if there are lots of particles it's a system that can definitely fail to treat and neutralize bacteria and protozoa. Usually that doesn't work for me with how much silt is in the water of the southwest.

Dude!? I've watched enough Backpacking Hiking Videos to now be an expert on this. WTF???? All I've seen has been Sawyer This and Platypus that...I now have purchased these. But nary a mention instead some $400 dollar endorsed pump system. And blah blah blah...WTF????? You forget your own video endorsements?
