I totally dig this thing in theory, but one little dent or warp in the wrong spot and the filter will either bind, or allow air bypass. So for my money, I’m gonna stick to the plastic versions and a the TI cook pot that I’m carrying anyway.

I'm pretty sure the ti cup it comes with just goes over the whole grayle. Unless you dent it heavily, it shouldn't effect the way the grayle works.

@@randyyeagerno the cylinder that you filter through is titanium bottle. but it's titanium.... So part of stainless Steels problem is it's weight, because (when it falls) it hits harder because it weighs more denting itself. titanium so light and strong that it won't Dent as easily as stainless from the same fall. Just don't drop it get a protective sleeve to go over it so if you do drop it it won't there's so many things you can do to prevent that if it's your most important piece of kit that you have just make sure you make it to where it won't put a lanyard so if you drop it it hangs around your neck or something

@@MRNTAT1621exactly titanium is stronger but it also doesn't deform in state deformed as easily I would be more concerned about using it on heat and cooking in it then I would be concerned with denting it by a drop or whatever if I got a titanium one I absolutely would not be boiling water in the cup I would just have it for weight and strength

I like the screw on lid idea. They could even make a screw on flange to widen the base as well, though it wouldn't be as streamlined.

This is why I love your channel. No bs, fluff or sales push. Just info that we need as consumers. I was a little annoyed to see this just after I pulled the trigger on an ultrapress (it's still in the mail lol) but after seeing your review I can see the Ti version isn't something that will fill a spot in my gear lineup. Thankfully the regular ultrapress is and I can't wait to bring it along on my adventures. It was a hard decision between stealth black and mojave red rock but in the end, the mojave won. Thanks for bringing us these based reviews Aaron.

I has extremely excited when I first heard about this. However I was very disappointed when I found out the titanium model was only available for the small version and not the full size geopress. Second the lack of a lid is a hudge fail, I don't know what they were thinking. So for now I have zero use for it. I will stick with my old geopress matched with the New Pathfinder cup which I absolutely love.

I have both systems, the geopress and pathfinder cup and also the titanium ultrapress and I love them both....I carry the titanium when I want to go ultralight and the size is no problem, as for the lid, I found the PERFECT silicone lid that fits it perfectly. I have a water bottle and coffee cup combo from the British company called cupple and the lid from the cup fits the titanium ultrapress like it was made for it, it sits in it loosely enough to be lifted easily if boiling or cooking, but also allows me to drink hot beverages without burning my lip, and the holes in the lid allow steam to vent when boiling, I ordered another lid from their website because they upgraded to a molded plastic lid that fit the cup better, so I use the original silicone lid as a dedicated lid for my grayl....I don't think they make that version any longer though.

I received mine recently and was bummed to find out that the outer shell is too narrow for the MSR Pocket Rocket2. However I picked up the Soto Windmaster and it works like a charm as the pot rests come further into the center when they are collapsed. It does make me a little nervous when it hits that boil. The great thing is the stove, igniter, sponge and cloth will all nest inside of the grayl for carry. Just not the fuel canister. Though there are some alcohol stoves that will fit with fuel for a self contained system, so long as they are narrower than 2.4".

FYI, the Ultra Press Ti fits nicely inside of the Snow Peak Ti coffee press. Wrap a quarter folded bandana around the ultra before sliding in the coffee press for a snug fit (and to have a pre filter). The plunger on the metric and imperial calibrated coffee press disassembles - use the top for a lid. Go ahead and brainstorm the possibilities from here. (Also, the Snow Peak is a little bit more stable on a stove.)

Some hopefully helpful Grayl tips. Add a fine film of food grade silicone paste to the main O-ring. That alone made mine 10x easier to press which is one of the few complaints with the Grayl. They sell food grade silicone in tiny tubes that will last years. It is often used on scuba equipment. For situations where you can't apply full body weight from above try leaning back and pressing it into your chest with both hands. I don't get leaks once the main O-ring is initially seated into the outer cup. Also, the Ti comes with a fine mesh outer bag. It will have some degree of pre-filter capability but of course nothing like 100 microns.

i like it. my questions - what is the chance of re-contaminating the water when pouring it from the filtered container back into the titan one. isn't probably not a big deal but something to consider. also - would it be a problem to clean it in the field after using it as a (instant) coffee mug - or would using it as a filter right after using it as a coffee mug not be an issue at all? and lastly - what was it with the electrolyte thing? totally lost me there.

Regular cup is 89$ that's a pretty gnarly price but it's needs a nesting cup for cooking that's like another 30$ (Amazon titanium cup) doesn't take much more space but will add a little weight or you can spend 200$ get the same thing but now you don't need a nest save a little weight and one less object to carry but I feel nesting is so efficient it didn't really need a replacement I like the idea of fishing water out if you can't physically get there but I can do that already with my nesting cup. Same with not touching water to refill. And it feels like my nest cup adds protection and if it gets slightly dented it is almost 5 times cheaper to replace. Over all though it's a awesome 2 in 1 design but I'll carry my 2 cups unless there's a decent price drop for this style then maybe il consider it.

It seems like a great design but they're quite heavy (12.5 or 16oz) and bulky compared to say, a platypus bladder and a quick draw micro filter (3.3 oz) Also, what happens if it freezes? Does the plastic container crack easily when it gets really cold...how about the filter? This seems like a car camping solution but not ideally suited to backcountry hikers.

G'day Aaron, great to see a company not resting on their laurels. A couple of points though; Since its already a purification unit you only need to make water hot for drinking coffee, tea, soup. And for meals, I find a tall narrow vessel to be a pain in the backside. So, ..... if one carries something else to cook food, that mug/pot can boil water too. Only real benefit of this version IMO is you can cook in another container and boil water at the same time on an open fire; though with a bottle/mug combo and a "standard" Grayl for purification you can do that anyway Just my 2 cents mate, I reckon it will suit many folks MO, thanks for showing it . Cheers Duke.

@Mike Cohen is right. Its not designed for prime time. Too small to be stable, under capacity and too much for the cost. The streamline thing is overblown because the Ti cylinder is too tall to vs width. Classic case of nothing beats a proper pot.

Great idea, but a few negatives. $199 is too rich for most people. And no option for the Geopress 24oz. If this was $125, and 24oz. maybe.

I would like to see Grayl release a version where you can boil water and after a few seconds or a few minutes you are able to use the water filter without damaging the filter. I imagine technology like this is a long way off though. Would be good for urban environments in minor flooding situations.

The beauty of the Grayl is that it’s a purifier down to virus size too. There’s no real need to boil before you filter.

@@stalwart263 Grayl said that for seriously infected water such as flood water it would be best to boil and the filter or filter than boil as they can't guarantee filtered flood water will be safe to drink. Obviously flood water isn't what you should be drinking but if you're caught up in a flood and cut off from help for an extended period of time, including supply from aid workers/organisations, you have to do what you have to do. I myself am not to concerned with the typical survival in the woods type things (whilst good to know) I'm more concerned with urban survival in a SHTF or natural disaster as I live in an urban environment and never go into the bush.

You should just get yourself 2, then pour them back and forth until it cools which would only take a few minutes. Then fill and boil the other one and by the time you're thirsty again, that one would be cooled

Aaron, thanks for all of your reviews and videos. I think Grayl had a good idea on this, but should have made options other than only 24oz. Unfortunately that is far to small to be really useful to me as a camping or hiking water filter. A 40oz option or larger would have been a more useful alternative. Hopefully they’ll make something larger in the future.

Also don't know how problematic it might be if it fell over and some grit got stuck to the outside of the inner bottle. Would it get stuck between the outer wall when going back together and could that cause problems?

I have 2 of the 24oz Grayl Geopress filters and am very impressed with their performance. Yes, they are expensive, but considering the ease of use AND that they filter out even viruses they are my go-to water filters. I was initially very interested in buying their titanium filter (I have replaced all of my s.s. cups and pots with titanium), but $200.00 for the 16.9oz version is too expensive. Now if they would offer the titanium cups for the original 24oz. Geopress, I would buy 2!

For me its a NO. Such a thin wall of titanium and so high and narrow shape, for sure it will fall very easy , and make dents or even slightly change the round shape. And that makes the filter useless. For less money i prefer a dedicated pot for boiling or cooking. Also overpriced.
