Bacon Fried Cabbage - Southern Fried Cabbage - 100 Year Old Recipe - The Hillbilly Kitchen

Bacon Fried Cabbage - Irish Bacon Cabbage - Southern Fried Bacon and Cabbage. This makes a delicious side dish with almost everything or can be the main course. This recipe is hundreds of years old and was brought to America by Irish immigrates in the mid 1800’s. Some of whom settled in the mountains of North Georgia and Western North Carolina are found in my family tree.
I remember my Granny making this when I was growing up as a part of big dinners and as dinner. When in season, cabbage is very inexpensive adding the fat from the bacon makes it very filling. In hard times bacon cabbage was a staple and a treat. This heirloom dish will add some delicious variety to your mealtime routine. It is not an ordinary side dish.
Remember to put God first!

My husband & I have been married 28 years. He had a stroke at age 50. We are still together and I am his caretaker. We have had ups and downs. God has Blessed me because I still have him. He is functional, but does not have a good long term memory and some problems with his short term. He is 66 now and he is my heart. I thank God every day for His mercy and Blessings. I love your videos. I found your channel right before your husband passed. I was so sorry to hear this. May God continue to hold, comfort and Bless you.

My parents brought our family from Germany to the greatest country in the world in the early 50’s and things were lean in the beginning. We ate this frequently, even much later on when times were much better. It’s just good home cooked food that you can only get at home. Thanks for reminding of it! I haven’t had it since my mother passed 40 years ago. I think it is well past time to revive an old tradition. 😊😊😊. Thanks again!

I love your recipe, it sound yummy. On a busy day I take about three potatoes, and boil them as I would for mashing size cuts. Then, as they boil, I sautee some two slices of bacon and onions, in a pan then add a two cans of green beans...I love the Italian cut ones, then I wait until it is boiling, and let it simmer as I boil a ring of smoked sausage or kielbasa. Then I pour off a part of the liquid in each pot, and put them all in one pot. It is delicious, and doesn't need any saesoning. Yum God bless!

Hello... I'm part Irish and this stirred a memory of grandad, who was born in 1895... the sins and misdemeanours of my youth have become the aches and pains of old age, and you inspired this... thank you. Poppa works, Momma cooks, she's always busy, well, that's how it looks... she's always baking, or making a brew, whatever it is, she's got something to do... We go to Church on Sunday, and, we give what we can afford, when we get home from praying, she says, Now, we're insured, with the Lord... We had a hillbilly kitchen, high up on the range, we'd dig the soil and plant it, its takes brawn and muscle strain, God provides the sunshine, God provides the rain... Working in the Coal-Mines, shouting Timber!, Cutting wood, i have to feed the children, God said that work is good, i already knew that, and i was sweating blood... Poppa was up before the dawn, and Momma began to bake, she was in the kitchen, before we were awake... i remember the smells of cornbread and bacon, sizzling in the pan... Poppa always cleaned his plate, he sipped coffee from an old tin can... He said the Lord giveth, and he takes it away, so be mindful what you've been given, and give thanks, when you pray... i know that life ain't easy, i know life ain't always good, but do the best with what you have, like the Lord God says you should...

I am watching this in 2023 & had made some up for my tea tonight. I used my slow cooker as it was sitting on the bench. Heated it up while I chopped up some baby potatoes into squares, put them into my steamer for approx 15 mins to steam, chopped up some bacon & popped it into my slow cooker & added some frozen chopped onions & left them to start cooking whilst I thinly sliced a cabbage. I also added coconut oil to start the process in the first place. I then put the cabbage on top & when the potatoes were ready I chucked them in & stirred it around. Then I left it to cook on high for about 20 to 30 minutes. Then dished it up, put some Himalayan salt over it & thoroughly enjoyed it. I haven't had this in years but suddenly felt like it the other day so made sure I had the ingredients on hand. Seeing I have a kilo of spuds, a heap of bacon & a bag of frozen onions as well as the rest of the half of a cabbage, I think I will be repeating this until the cabbage & spuds are gone. It is a good way for me to eat my coconut oil, which I do to fight dementia. It works for a number of problems so I recommend three tablespoons a day for good health. God bless!!

Every time I watch a Hillbilly Kitchen video, I am reminded of my grandmother and her friends - the best cooks on the planet (from the 20s - 30s.) I am thankful for my godly heritage. It was a blessing to "stumble" across the Hillbilly Kitchen. As I do not believe in coincidences, I know that God led me here. Not only are the recipes eerily familiar, but I get encouraged in my faith and relationship with Jesus in every video. If anyone reading this wonders why Christ followers love God and Jesus so much, just ask Him, with an honest heart, to reveal Himself to you. He will.

My maternal grandparents were both born before statehood (Oklahoma - both Native and European - grandfather 1891, grandmother 1902) and I never took for granted the old ways with which I was raised and taught by my mother. Yes! Me too! For a long time I was soooo ashamed fo being a hillbilly. But, I realized my people are strong Christian people, they survived so many hard times, and yet they survived, lived, loved and thrived spiritually! The way they talked, the odd words they used, well that has a history! It’s because the only book most hillbillies had back then was the King James Bible , isolated as we were, that’s what we read, that’s what we spoke … I’m proud of my people , proud of the food they ate, , I still cook that food, and I love my God!

We ate fried cabbage a lot when I was a kid. Didn't have money for the bacon! Mama served pinto beans, friend potatoes and corn bread with it. I don't remember the onions being cooked with it. Mama probably didn't like that. She tended to prepare dishes the way she liked them! 😂 When I grew up and was out on my own, I discovered maple syrup for pancakes. When I asked Mama why she never got us maple syrup (she made her own syrup), she said "I didn't like it!" I still like fried cabbage and I'm 76. Sooooo good. Nothing like comfort food.

I’m an avid cook and really find it comforting to both watch and hear about the origins of the dishes, of which so many I grew up on. We need to take the time and actually THINK about how our ancestors made so many delicious dishes mostly with only what was available and with no modern equipment or shortcuts. We are facing hard times ahead, and these dishes remind us that WE CAN do it, just as our ancestors did with hard work, a no give up attitude and with GOD at the center of their home. Thank you for your channel and infusing your recipes with scripture. God bless

I know that this recipe came from the UK, brought here by my great grandparents on my dad's side too. It was made by my family all the time but if no bacon, my gram would cut up pork scraps and added just the bacon fat, as she collected it and used it for anything she fried. She kept the same batch going for about a week, always reheating and adding more cabbage and grease, each day to keep the pot filled. It was a real treat if she cooked it with pork spareribs, as it boiled for several house, then she made dumplings and put those on top. My husband's family ate fried kraut all the time but with a smoked sausage in it (just had that a few nights ago) but I usually add some chopped cabbage to sweeten the kraut ... oh, my ... yum! Now I'll have to make my fried cabbage next week. Unfortunately this recipe will die out with our generation, as my children and all my nieces and nephews think it is disgusting!

This brought back so many memories of when I was 5 years old and going on a great adventure to Germany. We stayed with my Oma and Opa (Grandmother and Grandfather) in Koln. Yes, I'm half German on my late Mothers side, hence the terminology. I used to help Oma prepare and cook dinner on many occasions, not bad for a 5 year old. But the meal that has stuck in my mind ever since then was the fried cabbage, freisher bratwurst and brat kartoful, (sorry about the spelling). Even now, as I'm fast approaching 70 years old, I would still eat German food in preference to any other foreign food.
