BackyardBuild Winter 2012 Turbo VW Bug preview.mpg

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I finally got around to shooting some real-time video as the cars sits today. As you can tell there are many videos between the youtube footage and now, I will try and hasten their delivery. The white floppy things late in the vid are a couple of Tie-Wraps subbing for windshield wipers. Going fast sure creates a lot of wind noise.

The fit and finish craftsmanship of your project shows that you are very methodical and precise in your engineering. Nice work and I could care less if purists give you thumbs down. I would like to see this finished. Impressive. Most conversions wind up overwhelming those who start them, and it usually shows in the finished car. I would trust you to build my next aircraft.

Part 2: Check every floor drain for some missing cap, check the tunnel near the pedals because air-with-smoke may be getting in through there. If thy model does not have that outer grid right in front of the windshield, check the condition of the hood rubber. Bad hood rubber or bad calibration of the hood locker, (which causes the hood to close "loosen") make the air comes in through the radio grid beside the speedometer when running.

I am adding a bunch of cool stuff. i.e door poppers and electric windows, all remote. Yeah a bit of a chop, shaved door handles would make it look cool, but as you say it could also screw it up. I love the look of the old beetles but they are quite anemic. Thanks

Part 3: After all of that is checked and fixed, I'm sure it will be easily sealed. And for installing, I personally would install a double "Y" valve with the purpose of selecting the intake. ("air from outside" or "circulating air inside"). The "double" means that the "open leveler" must open the cockpit intake and the outtake at the same time, or else the fan won't make any good. If using a single valve, a "passive out-only valve" must be installed anywhere in the cockpit.

I got a 1974 vw beetle almost 100% original with dealer AC. I got some pretty quick cars and when I drive my bug to just cruise it's to slow. Thinking about putting a rebuilt higher HP motor same type or do a conversion swap. Either or a lot of work. nice bug.

The front nose of the beetle is completely open underneith. I have, however, built some ducting to improve air flow. It works good now here in Dallas at 100+ degree heat.

I put mine in the front because it is really the only place it will fit. If you can get it in the rear somehow, It would probably work better. My coolant tubes run from the rear to the front inside of the chassis. Look at some of my older videos to see this. Thanks, Tim

Part:4 And don't forget to add a filter between this "Y" valve and the cockpit. That way thou will keep thy cockpit clean and thy lounges healthy. (Not sure how thy region is, but here the weather is very dry therefore we have a lot of problems with dust around here). I hope my opinion helped and forgive me for the lack of technical term. English is my second language. Ace

The front nose of the car is completely open underneith. I also have a 3600 CFM fan pulling air from the foot-box area and pushing it through the opening under the nose. Also some ducting makes sure that hot air is not sucked back through the rad. So far it is working fine on 100+ days here in Dallas.

Hi Ace!! Thanks for the great feedback. My problem is that I have installed the heat exchanger at the front of the car. (where the spare tire usually sits). And I have made vents under the hood to enable the air to get to the heat exchanger. Now the air comes through and gets through to the cabin area through the speedo, radio and other panels on the dashboard. I am struggling to keep out the air now.

It all depends on what exactly the set up is. What motor, how executed etc. My motor is a 3SGTE Toy motor and I am trying to set it up as close to the way Toyota did it from the factory. I would not have any room for it in the rear, but it would be easier to do.

Hi, how do you plan to keep the cabin compartment air tight, once you have installed the Air Conditioner? I have come across this problem as I have difficulty in making the cabin air tight, since the hinges on the hood prevent me from fixing any sort of proper cover to block out air from out side entering the cabin space. Thanks.

You'll get lots of haters because of the complexity and engineering out of the norm. Have you gotten a chance to run it a distance yet and enjoy the massive weight to power ratio? Muscle cars will love it too.

I don't understand exactly the problem thou art facing there, because as far as I know, this VWs models are very sealed. Not sure if they were released exactly the same world wide, but this Tim's models here in Brazil were released in 68, 69. I had one 72. After 74, they had grids to the air comes in and out. Before that, we feel that blow in out ears when closing the doors. They WERE very sealed. That's why these cars take ages to sink in flooding. I believe thy VW must be missing something.
