VW Subaru Conversion Cooling System & Wiring Tips

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This project took more time planning than doing! These tips should be helpful on VW car / bus or dune buggy. It's so nice when everything works as planned when done. Lots of original design on the install. 30-40 MPG too depending how nice you are to the pedal on the right. If you would like more info on the fuse box build click here for the link • Fuse Box Build Your Ow... Questions? Ask, I will reply. Thank You for watching, Jeff.

    You sir have a beautiful shop and you do quality work. Back in the mid 70's myself and two other guys, I was 18 at the time, had our own shop. We had a valve grinder, seat grinder and solvent tank. We mainly did VW rebuilds. We had a deal that if you brought us your VW or bathtub Porsche by 7pm we would have it rebuilt and tuned up ready to drive to work by 7am the next morning. For a gang of 18 year old kids we made a tone of money. I would work all night and go to school in the day.

    Hello rottysaurus. I was hoping this video would be helpful to other persons perusing one of these builds. Did spend so much time thinking before doing on this project. I never tested the cooling system out for a traffic jam on a hot day situation. Well it was 105 degrees out one day & got stuck in a traffic jam. Was a bit nervous at first where it would of been a bad place to break down. So happy the cooling system worked great! Thank You for your kind comment, Jeff

    Hello. Yeah this will be a tough one to answer. I did remove the entire harness under the dash and under the hood. Didn't remove any rear harnesses. Did get all sensors & relays, under dash & under hood fuse boxes too. I didn't care for the factory fuse boxes, relays & the way things were wired so the things you see in the ammo box is my version. The easiest way might be to retain all the factory stuff & eliminate what isn't necessary. Take your time & good things happen! Good luck, Jeff

    Hi martin, there is no reply button for your comment. From what I heard is if people aren't on Google+ We can't respond directly. On the wiring harness I was able to hear the motor run and remove the entire harness myself at a salvage yard so one would know every thing works. It can be challenging but if you take your time & mark everything (believe in yourself) weed out what you don't need you can do it yourself and save some $. That rubber hose is 1-1/2" heater hose for a school bus. Good luck on your project, Jeff

    I know this is sorta old but if anyone is interested there is a co in austrailia that makes reversed ring and pinion sets to run the suby 5 spd in a tail dragger like the bug, dunebuggy or a porsche type. The set used to cost about 1500.00 but when you get up to about 200 hp the bug or 901 tranny is delicate and doesn't shift near as well as the suby. I enjoyed this video very much. Good info

    I was watching you vid and wondered if you have thought of incorporating micro processor technology? Specifically in the cooling system for replacing the thermostat. In the "old days", when you and I were kids, everything was mechanical. But today there are cheap microprocessors and sensors that can be used to control things like the thermostat on your engine. I have been learning about the arduino and am amazed at what I can do with it. I think it is worth your time to check it out.

    Hi 2jeff1 I am trying to continue the tradition. I have 13 year old son and am trying to teach him how to "fix" things. At the end of next month he and I are going to see a man near here that is putting on a seminar on knife forging. It will mainly be about making Damascus knives. 9 years ago I had cancer. For therapy I rebuilt the suspension on a Lincoln Town Car. This summer my son and I are going to pull the engine and make a 347 bored and stroke motor for it. It's a 6000 pound land yacht.

    Yes I did use part of the under dash harness. Unfortunately there isn't an easy answer for wiring the system. Things vary from year to year, auto vs manuel, etc. This will involve a lot of research on your behalf. Stay away from the immobilizer systems. There are websites that can help you in your particular wiring needs & schematic's.

Gates pre-formed hose P/N 21416 which comes off the intake manifold and runs along the side of the engine next to the fuel injectors. There is a coupler right past the injectors is where the hose length ended and connects to the hose that goes up front. Have fun, Jeff

    First of all, I watch and enjoy all of your vids! Now to my question: I noticed you split the exhaust and located the O2 sensor only on one side. Does it make any difference to the performance or mpg? I'm considering doing this on my trike conversion. Advice would be much appreciated. Many thanks.

  • @2jeffs1

    @2jeffs1

    6 жыл бұрын

    Glad to help out! That has no effect for performance or mpg. There is no problem having just one in one side of the engine as long as the engine on that bank is in good mechanical condition. The closer to the cylinder head the better. I did want to point out for you the 4 wire ones like in my Dune buggy the heater is not on continuously, not that maters for your question. It is on x amount of seconds depending on the engine temp conditions after start up. Another thought for you. On those 2 sensor design with one in front and one in the rear of the cat the front one is the one you need. It makes the air fuel decisions. The rear one measures cat efficiency and is not needed if your not going to have a cat. (that's the type mine had) Hope this helps you out, Jeff.

    I was thinking the ammo box might get kind of hot? I think the computer wouldn't like it. Your cooling system sure is complex.Did you consider putting the radiator just behind the engine? It looks pretty good.More modern and reliable than the old VW engine.I have noticed the VW engines getting hard to find. I always considered a subaru engine for a street legal sand rail. Plenty of power stock and i have found Subarus to be very reliable.

Seems there was a lot more DOHC engines available. I couldn't believe the engines that had broke timing belt from a accident - people were trying to sell them as a good engine for premium dollars.

    Sa J Hi Sa J. Always liked the Thing! What to choose is kinda of what's available V/S cost. The EJ 22 carburated would be easier to wire in if your not up to the electrical stuff as much. I remember servicing them in the past and always liked the Subie dependability. The newer EJ25's are nicer but will be more of a challenge to wire. There might be some kind of a kit available by now - wouldn't hurt to look if you were thinking of going with one of those. I have a video on brake conversions which should answer all your questions. kzread.info/dash/bejne/laeBy6pmerG8edI.html This should get ya started. Have fun! ,Jeff

  • @2jeffs1

    @2jeffs1

    10 жыл бұрын

    Hi Hashem. For the faster engine response - The flywheel and clutch is VW which is slightly lighter than the Subaru, the air intake hose I used is smooth which is better than ribbed, and newer engines are sequential fuel injected V/S the older port injected style. Sequential knows where the crankshaft is at a full 360 degrees. that is much better for starting too. BUT where you asked on the ignition tap I've read so many times you cant use a stock VW starter. You need a gear reduction for the Subie motor. I never believed that. I don't like to argue or disagree so I just do what I do. Here's what I have and I'm glad you asked!!! I have a stock 73 Super Beetle Bosch starter. (Can't remember if it's a rebuilt or new) Just use quality battery cables on clean connections - NO overkill required. I'm using an Optima red top battery. Any quality lead acid battery will be fine. Never once did the engine fight that starter! It always starts as fast as you can turn the key. Glad you enjoyed the video & hope to catch ya again, Jeff :>)

    Do you use a subaru transmission?

  • @colombianrednek5561

    I have experience with most Dohc engines but I'm not entirely sure on how one is better than the other though. Did you have to make your own mounting plate to attach the vw transmission? Where did you get your master rebuild kit (if you used one)?

    I think either engine is a good quality/choice of owner preference v/s availability. The engine adapter and flywheel came from www.kennedyenginc.com/ The quality and people were aw- sum. Also you will use the VW starter with that flywheel not the Subie one. I didn't rebuild the engine where the cylinder walls - you could still see the hone marks and were in ideal condition. It did have a stain where the head gaskets have been known to fail. So I did all the gaskets and seals. Also did a timing belt kit which also came with idlers, and new water pump. (Gates sells the kit) One more thing. I got a shallow aluminum oil pan from these guys. www.smallcar.com/ It holds 5 qts and is super quality too. Well hope this saves you some time & money and helps you get started on things. Good luck :>) Jeff

    hello!!!! i have a bettle whattrans axle did you use and i odnt really understand how you cooled it without over heating

  • @2jeffs1

    @2jeffs1

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Erik Borg The trans axle was from a 73 Super Beetle. An engine at idle generates very little heat. Where the radiator is out front very little air at slow speed is adequate to keep things cool. One time I was caught in a traffic jam for 45 minutes. The tiny fan that is mounted behind the radiator worked very well, it idled for quite a while before the fan even came on. Never have come close to an over heat.

    Hello , I don't remember of anything like that in my searches before I did mine. There are some wiring diagrams though. I believe the site name was bustedfingermotorsports.com. They had the diagram that I needed and did use.

    Do you recall more exact info on your reverse throttle body tube? Year? Model? Etc? Great solution!

  • @2jeffs1

    Hi Tyce. Not quite sure on your question. The engine is a 2000 Legacy ej25. That intake manifold is installed the same direction as it was in the car. To get away without altering it (cooling system part) I used a Gates pre-formed hose P/N 21416 which comes off the intake manifold and runs along the side of the engine next to the fuel injectors. That huge throttle body to air cleaner box pre-formed air intake hose I used the Gates P/N is 212238. Have no idea what that was used for originally in the vehicle industry. Thanks for stopping by and hope this helps you out!

    Thanks for the reply. My main question is about the reversed throttle body tube. You mention that you thought it came out of a caterpillar..That is a good solution That is the one I want to use. ."Busaru" makes a metal Throttle Body reversed bolt in tube...I like your solution...I searched your P/N in the Gates site and the number you reference is a V-Belt.

    You'll like this one. I googled the p/n and see what you mean. I have a parts build sheet upstairs in the barn for the buggy. Double checked the number I wrote down and it was correct. Ok. Now I dug thru the invoices and seen I wrote the p/n wrong on my build sheet! This IS the correct number now. Gates 21238. Double checked it and the picture I found is correct. (several different bends on that hose) I thought it was a radiator hose for a Cat or something on that order, glad you said that then I know we are all on the right page. I do remember making multiple small cuts to get a good fit and not having to purchase another one from a cut too much off oops. The inside diameter was 2-3/4 if you wish to know that too. My build sheet has now been corrected and thanks for letting me know I wasn't correct. Have fun, Jeff

    Yes that's it! Too funny - That's the pic I looked at! Where it is weird shaped you can see where it took multiple cuts to get the right fit for that tight bend! FYI - That coil inside don't get used, you already probably knew that tho... ;>)
