Large spaces with weird layouts could cause really weird echoes, where you can lose track of what sounds are you and what may be something else. You hear extra footsteps, are they just an echo from your own footsteps or is something unseen following you? You hear something from around the corner, but when you stop moving to give it a listen, the sound stops too. Were you the one making the noise, or did something notice the change in your movements and hide it's own? You call out and only hear your own voice in response, but it's weirdly twisted. Is that something caused by the uneven halls, or is something trying to imitate you? That's the sort of thing in a space like this that could really mess with your head. Having a random big ol' monster that you can see chasing you just ruins the whole uncertainty part of the horror.

The thing about the original backrooms that made it so scary and interesting was the uncertainty, uncanny-ness, and the isolation. A lot of the new “lore” just does away with that aspect.

I completely agree, I remember watching Markiplier do some playthrough of wandering through a huge house and nothing was happening, it wasn't even pitch black. The anticipation of something happening, though, made it terrifying. Then some ghost girl or something stood at the end of a hallway and the game was immediately less scary than it had been. Our minds make up things way more awful than what's actually happening.

I used to work at a convention in a really big convention center and the most jarring thing I've experienced is using their weird little hidden hallways to skirt the huge crowds and get to my tasks on time. Always empty, dont feel right and you will get lost a few times. It was like a seperate dimension, honestly. The one place I liked the least was the weird freight elevator you had to take to get to a loading bay to help the roadies for whatever musician was performing offload equipment. They were all places you felt like you didn't belong in.

Not really the same thing tho, but a few months ago me and my friends went to a famous mall which is usually crowded and hard to find parking space. When we go to the third-floor parking lot to see if there's an empty parking space, suprisingly it's so empty and quiet, literally don't have any vehicle or human. Probably my first time encounter a liminal space kinda situation, the emptiness really makes you uncomfortable.

This doesn't always make the nightmare end and can lead me down a rabbit hole of increasingly more convuluted "bad endings" that I end up jumping back to avoid. Like escape from the house, then avoid the car crash, then dodge the bomb falling from the sky, then avoid those bad guys. That type of thing. Like checkpoints in a game.

I didn’t think liminal spaces messed me up too badly, but the architecture of this spade is REALLY freaky. Something about the walls just randomly placed, with some dead-ends that actually have a small space you can squeeze through, and tight corners that just lead back to where you just were. It’s like, no matter where you are you’re basically completely vulnerable as accessible, because everywhere you go can be accessed from. . . almost anywhere. Freaky af

definitely lost some items to clipping issues in the past. One of our dogs' tags came off in a snowbank on a walk, I saw it come off and fall, but then it was nowhere to be found. Checked that spot for months after, too, and it wasn't findable even when the snow melted. Happens in my room too sometimes; I'll drop an earbud squishy, it'll visibly bounce, and then just be gone indefinitely

The Backrooms have always fascinated me on how liminal spaces bother people so much and the reaction a lot of people get when presented with really well done liminal spaces. I'm working on an adaptation of the Backrooms myself, though I'm trying to stick to being as canon as possible, with level 0 having the fire exit that leads to level 1 and so on. I only want to make the first 9 levels, since after that most people who follow the backrooms lore don't consider any level after the 9th to be canon, and there is even a purist sect of the community that only believe level 0 is canon. The demo will be from level 0 to level 3 and include actual canon monsters like Smilers. It'll be a fun way to get some use out of my 3D modelling and animation education. As far as my opinion of this adaptation, it would've been much better if the creator had included one of the canon monsters instead of the phantom. While seeing entities in level 0 is rare, there are a couple that can appear (the creepiest in my opinion being Hounds), and I think it would've been much more scary than a purple ghost. Also, in lore there is currently no known exit to the Backrooms, so how I would've ended it would've been for the player to find the fire exit door that leads to level 1 and realizing it wasn't going to be so simple to leave. Que monster noise, end screen. But other than that the camera movement is nice, the lights blend in very well with the ceiling tiles, everything has a realistic quality that could've been fully capitalized on with the right settings and rendering, the layout is very well done for not seeming to be randomly generated, and having a bit of an intro on how the player ended up in the Backrooms is a nice touch, rather than just starting the game in the level with no explanation. I'd give it a 7/10.

Nothing there yet as I'm figuring out procedural generation for Unreal Engine at the moment so the replayability of the game goes up, as does its confusing layout. But I'll post updates with level tests and speed clips of me sculpting the entities and such and demos of the levels as they get built. As I mentioned, the demo will be level 0 to level 3, and then hopefully I'll get some traction on Patreon or something to fund me working on the game full time, along with new endeavors down the line, and the other six levels can be worked on without me having to worry about where I'm gonna get my next meal.

put a stalking white humanoid with no face and being without clothes it sticks to the walls when it walks while u are moving it will move with u but wont get too close for u to make up how it looks, when u go through a split road it will peak through the corner and when u stop moving it will hide itself frome u by going near a corner and peak through, it will get closer and sometimes just stright up vanish, this will give a sense of dread, despair even, then it will walk outside of your vision and only thing u can hear is that footstep sound that is ALMOST in sync with your footsteps, only its not the sound of shoes, but of a flat feet. this is just an idea i just thought of that i think would work greatly in the backrooms. it will never charge at you but it might start running FAST the moment u see it to try and get outside of your vision. i would pass out if this was implemented correctly in a game.

I even dreamed being in a mansion with all sorts of monsters, (minotaur, and I think even the Xenomorphs were there at one point,) were chasing and killing people. As per my usual "nightmare" routine, after gathering the necessary info, I reset the dream, and try again, this time, I gather everyone else up to the attic and barricade ourselves in. Then, to make one final attempt at a peace offering, I jump through the window and literally FEEL my spine and neck snap as I hit the ground, but only for a few moments, before I take the form of a ghost, and use some diplomacy and negotiation on the ancient spirits of the mansion. TL;DR I have died in my dreams, and still keep dreaming. I even restart/respawn, depending on the dream situation.

There are some backroom games that go beyond the first level. Two of them are actually on Roblox, and believe it or not they're both pretty good. Not the best backroom games ever, but they are pretty damn fun in my opinion. Also, I would like to mention that the first level of the backrooms is technically the ONLY level of the backrooms. The whole "level" thing was only added by people to branch off of the original backrooms story. There's a reason why most backroom games only have you going through the "first level," because it's just faithful to the original that way. I'm not against the idea of a full-fledged backrooms game though, sounds good to me. 👀

@@zzerutan ikr? My thought is that the purpose of the backroom is to show what a horror something endless and aimless could actually be. The levels are vivid, vibrant, they give you expectation and knowledge that eventually, things will change. You have a purpose, you can even clip back, it just takes lots of labyrinths - which defeats the purpose of something without purpose and ending. I think it's simply human nature to make things 'more interesting', hence taking away the fear of the futile from the backrooms and making it just like any other labyrinth games. The backrooms isn't the backrooms if it has levels, that's what I personally believe. It'll just be a small part of a dimension.

_Mazeophobia_ It's not just that it's weird, empty, soulless spaces. It's that you're lost, endlessly wandering as your paranoia builds that you will never escape. Agree that the footsteps were actually more scary than the figure chasing you. It's the subtlety that unnerves you - you're afraid of what you can't see, can't identify. Vague voices, footsteps, creaky floors. odd shadows that don't belong. The stuff of nightmares. I think it was clever to have the glitchy items with numbers giving you the passcode to leave. Good job. I'd love to see a 'backrooms' game set in a town, with narrow cobbled streets, doorways that let you hide in them but won't open, alleys and gangways thru houses - all with dim street lights as you try to find your way out.

Add the same layout but a more- glitched- messed up version. Is it the same spot? Or are we somewhere completely new? Shadows on the floors of things that aren't there. More hallways that seem to extend but disappear once we're there. The monster is nice- but the panicked thoughts , questioning reality from the character and added dialogues would be a nice touch. It would've been a good concept- but all in all it's still a good game.

It would be interesting to see an experiment where two people are stuck in a space with the same weird layout, except Room 1 is dark, and the walls keep saying "IT" is chasing you. Room 2 is brightly lit, but empty. Then after a while with both people stuck in there, you let them out into a bigger Room 3, where they can meet each other. I want to see how they react to each other, especially the person in Room 1.

Watching this reminded me of a series of dreams I had as a kid... large space with strange walls, doors that led to nowhere, stairs that went up and down into walls... just overall weirdness. The backrooms reminds me of it so much.

When people talk about "multiple levels" to the whole backrooms stuff, then I'd like to actually see them put these into fruition as well as the monsters. That would be one heck of a nightmare, but a fun one at that! The ducts, the stairs, the doors and even the concepts behind it could make for a really good game.

Liminal spaces are no horrific on itself, but more the idea of being alone in an infinite space, and you most likely will never leave that place because the only way to go back to earth is by no-clip out of reality and pray to any god that is listening that you don't end in another level of the Backrooms (some say that there are like 3999 levels, with levels of pure oceans, or places where reality is just broken).

Just started the video and we’re already off to a great start by your description of the back rooms “A series of rooms and hallways that you wonder around a lot”

You have it lucky with nightmares: I'm almost always so powerless in mine, often trying to protect my pets and family from something awful outside while the house falls apart in some weird way. Even if things work out, I'm pretty much holding a broken door that moves like cloth or cannot close properly and it just feels horrible.
