Backporting - Veronica Explains Word of the Week!

New on Veronica Explains - Word of the Week!
This week, we'll be defining "backporting".
Backporting is when an older software package receives an update from a newer version of the same software.
Software developers frequently backport important fixes from new to old versions of their work- it's vital to understand for any Linux sysadmin!
Oh, and if you want to help me make more videos, please check out support.linux.mom. Thank you!

I love that example. It reminds me of the Buick our family had. We had an 8 track to tape adaptor that we plugged a tape to 2.5 adaptor into and hooked that into a CD player.

A short video, without being a YT Short. I like this much better because you can't cast a Short and I'm not always watching on my phone.

Yup, that's exactly the scenario I was thinking about when I decided to do it this way. Plus, Shorts seem designed around being ephemeral and disappearing into the timeline- I wanted to make something a bit more... bookmarkable? That way I could refer back to it in future videos.

I find shorts annoying because they loop and stuff.

the weird thing is it wont cast shorts, but you can watch shorts on the tv app just fine. shouldnt have to matter if i used the button on my phone or remote to make it play

Man you deserve waaay more views and subs! You are AMAZING both at being in front of a camera, explaining things in a way all can understand and have a charisma!

I love your visual example, specifically the iPhone section. I also noticed your boombox appears to also be a TV. I tried using some smart TV apps on a 1940s TV (coincidentally also an Emerson) and ran into some slight issues.

My boombox is a TV! I'm planning a video on it someday- I always loved these things growing up and found one at a thrift store a bit ago.

Thanks David! It was fun and pretty simple to work into my existing video routine. Doing it as a short felt like it was going to make it harder to bookmark- I'd prefer these videos to be a resource that works outside of the typical social media "just keep your eyes glued" context. :)

A non linux example: (when itunes existed in macos) Apple updated itunes for older versions of macos to be in line with the latest macos (for a few years). the version of itunes in macos 10.7 (2011) was updated with all the features and bug fixes of newer macOS versions until 2015

I had 8 track to cassette adapter with a cassette to 3.5mm jack hooked to a portable CD player...those were great times. Lol

Way too simplistic explanation. Do tell them that back-porting is not simply recompile or just a few changes. Sometimes back-porting is hard, slow and a total pain if for example, the language, tooling, versions or environment are different, etc.

I don't think I said backporting was a simple task? It's a "word of the week" definition, not a full tutorial or anything.
