    Two ways to do this without the plug-in is using Mid Side Eq and lowering the mix signal of the Mid input and second way is using the Haas effect.

    It sounds better when you double record all tracks and simply pan the background vocal tracks a bit and give 'em a different EQ to fit perfectly 'behind' the main vocal(s).

    This has nothing to do with "sitting perfectly" with a lead vocal. You're just making a false double and making it appear to be stereo and out of the way of the vocal. Sitting better would be adding compression so it doesn't have a large dynamic range that competes with the vocal and EQ moves that tuck it back nicely so it doesn't compete as well but supports the lead vox.

  • @mixwithjerry

    @mixwithjerry

    11 ай бұрын

    It sounds good to my ears and I never said this is simply "how to mix a background vocal" as that would involve EQ, compression, and de-essing - which were all done prior. This Short is ultimately about spacing out the background vocal from the middle if there is only one take. If you want to get caught up in the verbiage like "sit perfectly", then you're just nit-picking someone who is trying to make content. There's a reason this plugin exist.

    I actually don't agree with this advice. You should always mix in mono first and have your mix sound great in mono so this would literally do nothing except maybe add a slight delay. Before you do this (it's a good idea AFTER the mix is good) you should think about EQ. Your background vocals don't need to have a lot of low end, instead they should be more focused on the harmonic frequencies above 1K where they can add texture to the lead vocal without competing with it. Lightly cut the lower frequencies and use a slight delay (

  • @mixwithjerry

    @mixwithjerry

    11 ай бұрын

    Well in the video I said to widen the vocal “at the end of whatever your background vocal chain is”. Sounds like what you’re wanting to explain is the actual background vocal chain, which is completely dependent on the song. I don’t agree with you saying “you should always mix in mono first” either. You have the entire stereo field and you should use it.

  • @stevenleonmusic

    @stevenleonmusic

    11 ай бұрын

    @@mixwithjerry Your video literally starts out with this exact sentence: "Here's how to MIX your background vocal to sit perfectly with the lead vocal". It should have already sat perfectly in the mix because of your EQ/gain choices, widening should just be an enhancement. And yes of course you want to use the whole stereo field but getting the levels and EQ right in mono first is fundamental advice that pretty much any professional person or website will tell you right at the start of your audio engineering journey. I'm not a professional by any means but as a hobbyist I read a lot about it and watch a lot of these channels and I have never before encountered anyone with more knowledge than me who didn't suggest focusing on mono first and then using stereo imaging to enhance later-you would be the first.

  • @mixwithjerry

    @mixwithjerry

    11 ай бұрын

    @@stevenleonmusic Again, I literally said to do this at the end of your background vocal chain. Not sure why you equate that to me saying you don’t need to use EQ or anything else beforehand. This is just a technique, amongst many, to help the backgrounds sit well with the lead vocal. I think you’re really overthinking this. It’s a KZread Short. You think the entire book of mixing should be explained in under 60 seconds? I’m not covering how to mix background vocals in this video. I’m covering a technique that will help mix them to sit well with the lead vocal. Don’t get so caught up in the hook of the video. That’s how you get people to watch. The whole concept of the video was to show how to widen the vocal, which I did. I never said this is how you mix background vocals from start to finish like it seems you’re really hung up on. Judging from the likes and saves across here and TikTok, I’d say others found it helpful and gained value from it.

    Well, the advice on the video is actually really nice. In other hand, the mix in mono thing is actually a bad advice. You dont need to blend right and left together. You only need to blend left instrument with other left instrument, vice versa. You’ll actually lose a lot of detail and energy in the sound if you force it to sound good in mono. (Just in case you wonder. I’ve worked in one of the largest tv group in my country as a music director so i can safely say that what i said is valid.)
