I'm really new and casual (and bad) when it comes to backgammon so I didn't know about him. Your comment made me google his name and I'm about to watch a documentary about him. I figured you'd might appreciate to know that while he is gone, he not only lives on in your memory but also through his legacy as new people learn about him.

We need more videos like this. An actual position with a few different but not so obvious choices, and two strong players talking it out, each describing the pros and cons of each play.

Backgammon is strange in that you have this tiny community and it means that regular people can talk to world champions. Bill fucking Robertie is personally answering my strategy questions on twoplustwo forums. That's like Michael Jordan coming to check out your high school basketball team.

So backgammon is difficult before you know the answer and easy to understand once you do know the answer. Therefore, it seems that the whole fun of it is working out the answer! Myself, I had no clue about this 65 and no way to find the correct move.

Great commentary. I played both 24/13 and 24/18. Black won the first by a pip and white won the 'Falafel variant' by gammon! Although there were successive doubles for white and a super lucky 61 that got in and hit the move after 65 having been hit by black on the 18 point. I'm a rookie fyi so margin for error :)

8 pip down in a race with over 100 pips + cube in your hands + no blitz risk by immediate ( saving gammon ) = 24-13 that what i would say in a choutte to convince the captain :) This is no money game but would run anyway

The logic behind this I think is because blue has many bad rolls and he is also very "thin", not stacked up. He will most definitely leave a shot and we will have an extra attacker out to cover our outfield after we hit him.

I would have played 13/2. i dont like 24/18 because the 18 blot will be hit to often. I mean on 7:23min

run 24 to 13, use 24 as a commando. hard for him to hit safely for 2 rolls. spread open behind him and fill 1, 2 and 4 asap, then snipe the remaining as he fills. dont worry about getting hit, your hit will come and if you are filled he will be sitting
