Backflip On Skis Full Progression

Спорт

A backflip was a personal skiing bucket list that I've always wanted and I finally managed to get it this season. A big thanks to all my friends and family members that patiently spotted/filmed/coached/encouraged me!
Also a big thank you to Stomp It Tutorials. At this point I've probably watched hundreds of their videos.

That's how we learn it in gymnastics! One reason to learn standing first is because it really teaches you to jump *up*. You gotta learn to jump straight up if you wanna do backflips consistently. That's also why his flips on skis look a bit wonky; he's staying super close to the ground where he should be jumping up *before* starting his flip.

Awesome progression! One quick note is that you are launching the flip from your shoulders (leaning back), which tends to cause over rotation. You should try to first jump "up" and then launch the rotation from your hips by pushing them forward and up and then bringing your knees to your chest. This will give you more control and eventually allow you to backflip without requiring too much speed or height. Good luck and congrats again!

I really admire attitude, wish I had your guts. I'm still afraid to do backflip from floor even though I know my capabilities and certain that worst case scenario would land on knees. But you've been landing almost on your head and still continued 🤯. I've started trampolining and gymnastic because of skis somewhat 3 years ago now. And I did my first backflip to airbag only last week - unfortunately had guts only for 4 tries (but aced frontflip). So, it's impressive, keep going!

I did diving board, cliff gainers and flips, then trampoline , and the snowboard barrel roll and backflips. First snowboard ones were homemade kickers into deep pow (harder to land but got confidence), then table tops which came quick by that time. Never learned to flip just flat ground. Thats nuts to start that way haha!

As someone who ate shit multiple times while learning how to backflip on skis, I respect your courage and determination. For those who have not done it; 1. Trampoline without skis for air awareness first 2. Trampoline with skis and boots for air awareness with weight 3. Water ramp with same skis and boots for air awareness when moving 4. On snow into an Inflatable Airbag with skis and boots 5. After perfecting #4, on snow in a powder day, check your landing zones and have a buddy spot you, for the win. There is no quick and easy, just hard work, determination and the satisfaction of a job well done and your own sense of personal accomplishment. Also, in my personal experience, when doing it on a deep snow day moving along, I found that I really had to have a big enough jump to have enough time to flip around, the right take off ramp angle and had to pull really hard to come around, until I got more experience. Have fun, learn from others, stay safe and enjoy the slopes.

You should practice "setting" your jump before tucking. There are lots of videos on it. Will significantly improve your ability to adapt in the air. Instead of just hucking. This is why you keep rotating at the end so often. It will also help your ground flips. Nice work!

Starting off smashing yourself against the ground like that is madness. I learned backflips on trampoline, then bouncy but stong surfice (only when I know I could land one every time) then on flexibly supported surface not too bouncy (also only when 100% confident) and then on regular flat - continuing to succeed every time. Otherwise its fuccin scary if there is a chance you’d fall on your head or knees.

This makes sense. You're doing backflips in a vacuum. On the slopes you're executing the same move over and over, just like you did in the gym. Except terrain and speed are now variables. These would go a lot better if you simply got a feel for what was happening with your board/skis while executing the jump vs. robotically going 🤖 jump. Approaching. 🤖 now in air. Must flip. 🤖 now back on ground. Did flip success?
