It was beautiful out there. I was fishing for my Patreon on this day but I have a clip for this lake on my backcountry fishing playlist if you haven't seen it and are interested. Seeing this much snow caused me to push back my plans for hiking into the backcountry above 10K to at least the 3rd week of July.

That's exactly right. I hate alarmists who freak out over both too much snow or too little snow over the course of a few years. Even 20 years doesn't even register on the timescale for a planet this old. I have clips for a creek I fish at the back of Southlake above Bishop when it's exposed after a few years of below average snow. I've been fishing it since the early 90's and I can tell you it's only fishable about every 5 years or so. You first need the lake level to drop after a drought year or two and then you need larger to fish to move in from the lake and spawn. It's been under water the last two years so I don't think it will be fishable for at least 5 more years unless they draw the lake down to work on the dam. Until then, I have a couple of videos for that creek on my backcountry fishing playlist. Nice wild rainbows, browns, and brookies. All I can do is watch those videos and wait for the drought years to come around again! I love that creek when it's there.

2 more weeks for dicks and fontinellis. I flew over them over the weekend. Gilmore was half covered in snow, aloha still mostly covered, lake of the woods covered, heather covered, the 3 velmas clear. Ropi, twin, island, clear, schmidel covered. But this is normal for a normal snow year. 2 weeks from now and will be in full blown hiking season with wildflowers. That patch that amani will be gone in 2 weeks also. Its the last spot to hold snow on the way to winnemucca. The snow around the lake will be gone in a week. We are going to twin this weekend to catch some brookies

Yeah, I'm not even thinking about hiking to Dicks and Fontanillis for a few weeks. That last ridge/pass you have to cross before Dicks is notorious for taking a long time to clear of snow. I have a couple of clips on my hiking playlist where I tried to get over it in June. one of those failed attempts was during an average snow year and I was stopped cold. This year it's going to be a while with the heavy late snow we got. The one thing that I didn't capture in my first failed attempt to get there in June was me sliding backward on my pack, head first, down a steep snow covered slope as I tried to cut cross country down to Velma Lakes! That was sketchy! The creek you have to cross at Velma if you go the Fontanillis first route can be a real drag when it's raging from snow melt as well. Like it will be this year!

Dicks pass holds snow for another month and mosquito pass will not be much fun either. I do suggest making a loop out of it though. Whats your route? If you are fishing, bring power bait and fish the east shore of aloha near the heather lake turn off. Or go for macks in gilmore

@@travisk5589 Yeah, we are hoping to make a loop out of it. Starting at Eagle Falls. First night at Middle Velma. From Middle Velma, we are taking the Velma Trail to the Rubicon Trail. South on the Rubicon, over Mosquito Pass to Lake Aloha for night two. Day three will be PCT over Dicks Pass to Dick's Lake for night 3. Day 4 will be back down Eagle Lakes trail and home... I have hiked most of this route before but the late snow in May has me a bit apprehensive but now it has been warm so fingers crossed it will be clear or at least doable in a couple weeks. Definitely plan on fishing. I have had great luck in Dick's Lake in the past.

Yeah, I was caught a little by surprise by how much was on the ground. This clip won't be relevant beyond a couple of weeks but it might give some people insight on what to expect and prepare for if they are goping on a trip soon. An adjustment they might make are extra dry clothes, especially socks, and make sure footwear is waterproof. I am pushing back plans to hike above 10K from the first week of July to the 3rd week. If I go, I don't want to struggle to reach lakes and then battle ice and snow just to fish.

Fished the West Carson River and then hiked up to fish nearby Crater Lake on Tuesday, slept in my car, and hiked in to fish this lake this morning. It's no mystery how I have so much content on channel playlists after just 4 and a half years.

It was getting sloppy on the hike out after things warmed up. I didn't know what to expect but my experience hiking to this lake is that if there are snow fields they're typically relatively flat and there isn't anything where if you slip you are going to get seriously hurt or killed. I just turn around when I see snow on a trail and make that calculation. I honestly wasn't expecting this much snow to be on the ground. It definitely is causing me to reevaluate my plans for the rest of the month. By "reevaluate" I mean change them entirely!

The Truckee is as big as I have ever seen it. At least it was a week ago. With how high Lake Tahoe is, I don't see that changing for a bit. I fished the West Carson yesterday and it's fine. I was the only person fishing the whole time I was out there. I am still reluctant to make the drive all the way out to the West Walker because that river is notorious for staying brown a long time with heavy snow melt and it's about to get hot. At least that was my experience last year.

It's good to get there. If you know where the Lake is it isn't too tricky and all of the snow fields are on relatively flat ground so you won't be risking sliding to your death on some steep area, which is nice! The fishing was a little slow but eventually I figured it out and started whacking one after another. First half hour of fishing, I had my doubts. My best attack was with a brown wooley bugger. The risers were being very selective and seemed to be feeding on something in the surface film near some floating ice. With the heat going up, the fishing in that lake is bound to catch fire any day. Hope it happens when you are there. Good luck.

I have no idea. I think that's lower but it all depends on the sun exposure. The tricky thing about early trips after heavy or late snow fall is you can hike for miles and hit one section on a steep grade where snow is covering the trail and then it's decision time. I would think you will be good to give it a shot, especially after several more days of hot weather before you go. Any creeks you have to cross might be a challenge. I actually plan to fish the area around Wrights lake later this Fall if you are talking about the Crystal Basin Recreation area.

  • @wildernesswithamani1027

I don't think they stock the brookies up there. Brookies reproduce like crazy and don't need ideal spawning conditions like most trout do. That's why they outcompete other trout often. Fishing started off slow today but once I figured out a winning strategy I was hitting one after another. They barely wanted my jig. They seemed to hate my nymphs. It wasn't until I put on a brown woolley bugger that I started hitting fish consistently. The brookies in this lake are nice but they can be tough to catch sometimes. Unlike in many alpine lakes with brookies, they don't seem to ever hang out near the shore. You sometimes have to go deep to get them. I haven't been skunked there in the few times I fished it but the fishing was never easy. I think maybe you just hit a tough day.

I've never hiked to those lakes. I know that if you try to go to Dicks or Fontanillis the snow will be ugly for a while. I am not going near there before July starts and even then, I might give it a couple more weeks. I have at least two videos on my hiking playlist where I get turned back by snow trying to get to Dicks near the end of June and it's always that last ridge before dicks that's packed with snow late. Last year we got even more snow and I ended up having to go to Velma instead of Fontanillis and Dicks in early July because of snow. I had to power into Velma Lakes cross country because I lost the trail to snow. If the lakes you talk about have good sun exposure on the trail, I'd say maybe try early July. Just like today when I set out for this hike, I am just guessing based on past experience. I hear some of the lakes up there are still covered completely or partially with ice.
