Awesome to see these blacksmiths developing a younger generation to continue their craft for the future. Great vid!
I love being able to go (virtually) to the places my knives come from. Knives become such a well loved part of people's lives because they help to feed us. The oldest knive I have - a wonderful old serrated bread knife - actually came from England and had at been used by three generations of the same family. It was given to me by the grandfather of my friend who was a wooden furniture maker who made furniture that was sold around the world. He had even travelled to France so that he could repair some of the amazing antique French furniture at Versailles! At the time he gave me his breadknife, his own wife had died and so the bread he ate every day came from a bakery and was sliced for him when he bought it. Since he knew that I made my own bread, he thought that I should inherit his family's knife. I met him in my 20's and the knife works just as well as ever now that I am in my 70's!

Sad that there are so few women blacksmiths in Japan!

I think that's really going to change over the next couple of decades. There are so many talented women working in Tojiro, and seeing small changes like Yamatsuka-san's daughter joining the trade is incredible to see. There's progress happening on every level!
