    Thanks for making this video. I have been resurrecting old Android devices that have done nothing but gather dust for the last several years, and this is the last one on my hit list. I was amazed to learn it has such a modern build available, but this whole repartition business is a bit worrying, as I'm visually impaired so have to do things very carefully. But between the wiki and your video I should be fine. Cheers.

    I cannot get past the repartition stage. There seems to be a bug in the interface between Lineage Recovery and my Windows 11 pc. Whenever I select "Install from adb" on my Nexus, I seem to lose connectivity, and the adb sideload command fails with "error: protocol fault (no status)". I'm curious what Windows version you used when you did your installation, as it may be an issue with driver behavior on this OS :(

    Just finished modding my 32GB Flo last night. I got it used for a mere £27 last year. The previous owner just left it sitting my around doing nothing, thinking it was too old to be useful anymore. It's now my main tablet. Got the full package installed on it. TWRP, LOS, Open GApps nano, and Magisk. It's not the fastest device out there but it performs admirably for a 2013 device running Android 11. It's amazing what can be done with old devices when you just take the time to give them a fresh coat of paint. It saddens me to think about how many devices have been thrown away by their owners on the basis that they're too old. There's so much hidden potential in these old devices that's not being utilized.

  • @Honosuseri

    @Honosuseri

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yes it saddens me too! I'm actually quite content with my current Nokia Android phone BUT it no longer receives the security patches or OS updates any more. Yet this 2013 tablet thanks to Lineage OS is now "more secure" than my daily driver phone as it DOES get the security updates! Yes it's a fair bit of faff getting the Nexus 7 updated but it's worth while. As you say it's not the quickest device but still perfectly serviceable.

    @@Honosuseri Indeed. Having a little tablet like this for basic media consumption is great in combination with the nice array of features Android 11 offers. The fact that I don't have to worry much about security either is very reassuring. Definitely worth doing this. I have since also flashed AnyKernel3 (a fork of ElementalX) to take advantage of features like fast charge, overclocking, and double tap to wake. Makes this tablet just that bit nicer to use in the modern age.

This is what happens when I go with it anyway: > adb sideload . epart.zip Total xfer: 1.00x > adb shell * daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037 * * daemon started successfully * error: device unauthorized. Hey man, I just wanted to report back to let you know I managed to upgrade to Lineage OS 18.1 in spite of my original problems and wanted to explain how I did it, because it was really nothing like the officially prescribed approach, which was giving me trouble. I also did not like the idea of ditching TWRP, which I am a big fan of, especially its ability to do comprehensive backups. Having already upgraded a number of other old devices, I felt like my understanding of what was going on was strong enough to do things differently, and also, I didn't really care if I bricked the device, so I was willing to experiment in the name of learning. First off, I found a repartition zip that could be installed from TWRP. This may or may not be the one you referred to in your video but the github repository dates the file feb 2021 so it was not that old. Anyway, you just install it from TWRP and then go to advanced/terminal and type "modify". The system partition went from 880 Mb's to 1450. Note the XDA guide suggested using their custom TWRP after installation but this did not work well for me, I think because my device is DEB not FLO (it has a sim). So I just installed the latest DEB TWRP and it still worked fine. Note if you select wipe/advanced.wipe, you can then select to repair/modify a partition. Select SYSTEM and you can see the amount of used and available space, This is how I confirmed the size increase. As prep I wiped DALVIK Cache, System and Data via TWRP (after doing a backup and copying it to my PC). Next I downloaded the latest Lineage flox build and the pico GAPPS installation and copied them both to my internal storage. Then I went into fastboot and flash booted the Lineage Recovery (which I don't like, as I am visually impaired so find hard to work with). There was no need to connect to the PC but I did enable adb just to be safe, and then selected Install from Internal Storage. I selected the Lineage package and it installed without issue. This was all I needed to do in the Lineage Recovery. I navigated to Advanced and rebooted to Recovery, which took me back to TWRP. From there I installed the GAPPS package, rebooted, and I was in business. This means I am able to use TWRP backup without issue, and will only need Lineage Recovery to install upgrades to the OS. ps. Very impressed with 18.1, runs really smooth and no bugs so far.

  • @MrBendybruce

    @MrBendybruce

    2 жыл бұрын

    I have to make a small correction here. It seems that after installing/booting into the OS, Lineage Recovery has permanently installed itself and a fastboot flash of TWRP can no longer replace it. Not to be outdone, you can still do a "fastboot boot " in order to temporarily install TWRP do backups or any other functions available from TWRP.

    I think it's because x86 makes up an incredibly tiny percentage of Android devices. They're not really worth working on, so developers just end up making custom ROMs for the vastly more common ARM devices instead. One of the more popular x86 Android devices to have ever existed that was sold worldwide was the ASUS MeMO Pad 7. The last version of LineageOS it ever got was an unofficial build of LOS 16 based on Android 9 at the end of 2019. By comparison, the Hudl series was only ever sold by Tesco within the UK so hardly anyone knows of it and thus no one makes custom ROMs for it.

It was very slack on the Nexus I have, when I opened it to change the logic board over I also used some thin nose pliers to very gently pinch the USB port to tighten up the connection. Again you do this at your own risk and I suggest you do research before trying to "mod" the USB port. The N7 does support wireless charging and these chargers are cheap, saving wear and tear on the USB port
