I think you don't do justice to the strength of Bach's faith in this otherwise glittering assessment of his work. Why do u think he was satisfied with saying "Soli Deo gloria" @ the end of each composition? Why was he so modest, even in his uncompromising and abrupt way? I don't think you guys see the whole picture of who Bach was. Why does he use the muted joy of the oboe, when he could've more often used the exhilarated joy of the trumpet more often. His music is not merely beautiful; some of his beauty needs to be see through the eyes of faith, and not just any faith, but the tensions of Lutheran theology.

Leaving aside everything else, the organ interpolations in the last chorale no.72 are remarkable. Well done.

I had time to listen till the end: this choir is close to perfection. Biller will be satisfied, hearing this from above.

I don‘t think so. But Reize could have been learning from him, how to perform Bach. THIS PERFORMANCE IS FAR AWAY. Tempo much too fast „O Mensch bewein …“, in jazzy style is not fitting, „Sind Blitze sind Donner …“ is disastrous. And the conductor has no feeling that a short shirt is no style. No, that is too much, Mr. Reize.

@@ProfDrhcOfMinistry This is part of why Lutheran worship has the musicians ministerial, in the back balcony; they're supposed to be and remain unseen. Only the Word and Sacrament (Baptism and Eucharist) are to be up front and seen. Churches having gaudy musicians up front are in danger of losing the true reason for true worship.

@@ProfDrhcOfMinistry I was there for the live performance in 2022 which was during an "extreme heat alert." It was close to 100 degrees Fahrenheit, or almost 38 degrees Celsius in the afternoon when it was performed. I wanted to be hard core so wore a suit and tie--but of the kind that looks rather formal but designed for Honolulu, Hawaii where I was from. It was uncomforably hot, and I was just sitting downstairs. I'm just making an appeal for cutting the hard working musicians some slack. I'm going back to the Bachfest this summer (2024) God willing.

Thank you for posting this! I was there for the live performance but those upstairs seats were not available so I'm getting to watch the performance now. It's truly a wonderful performance and Thomaskantor Andreas Reize is certainly up to the task of being Bach's successor in that position.

Er hätte vielleicht doch das eine oder andere von seinen Vorgängern abnehmen sollen. Tempoverschärfung im S/A-Duett ist inakzeptabel. Der nachfolgende Chorsatz „Sind Blitze, sind Donner“ entartete zu einem undefinierbaren Klangbrei. Schon mal was von Tempo ordinario gehört? Eigener Weg und eigene Prägung okay. Ich bin froh das ich bei dieser Aufführung nicht in der Thomaskirche sein musste….

Je l'ai chanté à Montréal à la maison symphonique, pupitre ténors, sous la direction de maestro Yannick-Nézet-Séguin avec l'Orchestre Métropolitain. Jamais je n'oublierai. Et j'apprécie particulièrement que ce soit des jeunes garçons pour les pupitres normalement occupés par des femmes. Ça donne une pureté spéciale pour l'oreille avertie.

I had a priviledge to be in Thomaskirche when this video was made. The music, the choir, the orchestra and the solists were so great. Can’t wait next June in Leipzig.

What I find amazing is that even the great Bach saw the need for (sometimes) revising his own work, perhaps to make it as close to perfect as possible. (I don't know if Mozart ever did that.)

Their compositional methods were different. For the most part, Mozart was capable of composing his works in his head and writing them out with no revisions or corrections. Beethoven, on the other hand, would change, revise, delete, and add to his works relentlessly until he finally felt he'd arrived at a final work. Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven employed different methods in creating music. Whatever those methods were, it is the final work which matters. The process used to arrive at the final work is not indicative of how great the work might be. You know: apples and oranges. Have a safe and wonderful week, wherever you are. 🌻🐧🌻

There was nothing to perfect in Mozart's music. So he had no reason to rewrite.

Die wundervolle Bass-Stimme von Andreas Scheibner (Jesus) erinnert mich an die Stimme von Theo Adam.

Ich habe ein Aufführung der Matthäus gehört.....die war noch schneller! Was Herr Mai sagt stimmt, man muß auch mal seine Hörgewohnheiten anpassen. Ein Karl Richter spielte sie in mehr als 3 Stunden in den Jahren '50. Dies gilt auch für die Aufnahme aus den Jahren '70 mit den Gebrüdern Mauersberger (Thomaner & Kreuzchor)! Über Geschmack kann man nicht streiten! Bin aber froh das jetzt wieder Aufführungen in der Thomaskirche gemacht werden können! Danke!

Ja, Corona hat wie überall unsere Kultur hinweggespült, wer den Abstands-Unsinn nicht mitmachte, musste gehen... als ob es hier um Geschmacksfragen geht... armes Deutschland, arme Bach-Stadt Leipzig... nun weht hier ein anderer, schnellerer Wind, der hoffentlich in einen Sturm sich wandelt und den Unsinn eines Tages fortbläst...

Herr Biller etc. hatten genau das richtige Tempo vorgegeben. Für meinen Geschmack ist Herr Richter viel zu langsam und Herr Reize viel zu schnell. Und das sage ich als 19-Jähriger, der durchaus flexibel an solche Dinge rangeht. Der Eingangschor ist mein absolutes Lieblingsstück über alle Komponisten hinweg, aber nur in angemessenem Tempo. Die Version von Herrn Reize kann ich mir fast nicht anhören, weil so viel verloren geht.

Muy bella la interpretación de la obra de Bach. Queda en pie la cuestión : si con los instrumentos originales o con los instrumentos desarrollados ? Cual suena mejor ? Ésta versión o la versión de Karl Richter con los coros y Orquesta Bach de Munich ?

Eine fast perfekte Aufnahme. Mich stört nur das ungewöhnlich hohe Tempo, sogar in den Rezitativen. Ein wenig langsamer hatte das ganze insgesamt sein können. Aber sonst perfekt.

Da bin ich wirklich stolz auf den neuen Thomaskantor. Mal einer der mehr als Gewandhausorchester nimmt und neues wagt. Man versteht hier auch durchaus warum ein Wechsel her musste. Gotthold Schwarz war nicht schlecht aber als Chorleiter leider nicht genial. Andreas Reize scheint wirklich Genialität zurück zu bringen nach Biller.

Mah, 56:50 - "Sind Blitze, sind Donner in Wolken verschwunden?"... ha lasciato veramente alquanto a desiderare (e non solo quello). Come ha detto già qualcuno, siamo ben lontani ormai da Georg Ch. Biller. Belle le voci degli adulti e in particolare quella del cronista, molto meno quelle dei Thomaner scelti come solisti ma non dipende da loro bensì da chi li ha scelti.

Éste concierto de la ejecución de la pasión de nuestro Señor Jesucristo según San Mateo. Lo utilizan para la liturgia luterana para el viernes santo o sólo es una pieza musical para los melomanos. Gracias.

Great, St Thomas Choir is back. Under New management, it seems enthusiastic leadership. Bravo! Soloists were a delight. The speed in Part 1 of the passion is too fast. 'Sind Blitze, sind Donner' is without thunders due to the high speed. 'Oh Mensch bewein Dein Sünden groß' lacks depth and finer details. The speed in Part 2 is more differentiated and much more enjoyable, including the final chorus. Overall a great performance, thank you very much.

Excellent, à mon humble avis c' est une des meilleures interprétations; mon baromètre, c' est :les yeux embrumés ou pas , dans les cinq dernières minutes . Merci .

Meiner Meinung nach ist es eine gelungene Interpretation, die ich live in Leipzig erleben durfte. Einigen war es insgesamt zu schnell gespielt/gesungen - ich finde das nicht, da der Vortrag stets transparent klang und gut artikuliert war. Vielleicht muss man hin und wieder alte Hörgewohnheiten ablegen, nur weil es früher so war... Allerdings: schneller bitte dann wirklich nicht mehr.

I noticed the short sleeves too but some ppl get way overheated during performances and he is the centerpoint. What i wonder about is THREE keyboards? Did Bach score it that way?

Sublime but I had my heart in my mouth in the choruses for Andreas Reise: I have vertigo and that balcony railing is low… Seriously though both Bach and Georg Christoph Biller both will be looking down on this together delighted that the choir is in such passionate, capable hands.

Please could more detailed timestamps be added, so we can easily find the parts we particularly love (e.g. 2:30:45 Mache dich)?

Wofür bekommt der neue hemdsärmelige Kantor soviel Bravo?? Nun, er kam zeitlich und linear gesehen wohl als Schnellster ins Ziel - trotz Zwischen-Pausen mit viel Lärm wie auf dem Leipziger Hauptbahnhof - samt Bahnsteig-Durchsagen! Allerdings: auf dem Weg dorthin hat er nicht nur den Anstand, die historische Aufführungspraxis (die hier wohl zu einer eher hysterisch-stereotypen entglitt), sondern leider auch noch die Jungs verloren, die mit Deklamieren gar nicht mehr nachkamen... Armes Leipzig, armer großer Kantor Bach, arme Thomaner...Jahrmarkt-Getümmel mit Walzertanz-Wettbewerb in der Karwoche in der Thomaskirche, Geschrei und Geklingel wie in einer Süditalienischen Basilika, wo noch während der Messe verschiedenste Waren feilgeboten werden - hier die Matthäus-Passion Bachs, verkommen zu beliebigem Ministranten-Sing-Sang. So fällt nichts mehr wirklich ins Gewicht (mit immer dem selben schulmeisterlichen Bogen-Abstrich)..Kling-Kling - "aus Liebe will mein Heiland sterben..." Kling-Kling - Klang - Bumm - " Sein Blut komme über ihn und unsere Kinder..." in heiterem Faschings-Umzuge...(Wohl traurig, aber beinah tröstlich: Christoph Biller und Martin Petzold müssen dieses nicht mehr miterleben. Ach, gefühlt werden soll nun wohl auch nicht mehr, die Maschine rattert nur noch vor sich hin, dann kommen mit der Komplett-Digitalisierung DIESE Pionier-Chor-Klänge nur noch aus den Computer-Lautsprechern denen, die weiter in Wohnhaft sind... nach "Corona" ist nun auch als Krönung die christliche Welt komplett von Sinnen... Alles ist - nicht nur in den Kirchen - auf den Kopf gestellt --- vielleicht, nein absolut: EINE GROßE CHANCE FÜR DIE WAHRHEIT, die wiederzufinden wir hier alle auf dem Wege sind - der nicht nur musikalisch steinig - und welche jeder Mensch für sich selber verantwortet... ("Wohin - wohin - Wo - wie - Warum - wozu - wozu...?)...eins-zwei-drei-vier, eins-zwei-drei-vier........Eckstein, jeder muss versteckt sein............(mit romantischem Orgel-Gesäusel zwischendurch, wie im Süden, habt ihr genau hingehört?).....und dann kam das kalte, flackernde Licht der Neonröhre.........und dann wieder ein Walzer.........

Drastischer Kommentar- ich würde das noch anders ausdrücken, aber völlig richtig. Der Mann ist Triathlet, vielleicht liegts daran.? Eine klassische Fehlbesetzung. Er hat dieses prachtvolle Werk nicht verstanden. Und der Bach liegt im Grab, kann sich nicht wehren. Freu mich, das hier viele so denken. Das Orchester ist gut, aber der Fisch stinkt vom Kopf her.

Also mir ist’s tatsächlich viel schnell. Schon im Eingangschor bekomm ich Schnappatmung. Kein Raum um diese tollen Bögen auszuspielen. Die „Blitze und Donner“ … also ich weis nicht. In dem Tempo ist’s dann auch echt nicht mehr schön artikuliert. Was Karl Straube manchmal quälend langsam interpretiert das ist mir hier echt zu schnell. Die Knochen des alten Bachs werden vorne im Altarraum auch geklappert haben. Dennoch ist Bruder Reize der amtierende Thomaskantor und es ist sein Privileg das so zu machen. Aber gefallen muss es dann halt leider nicht. Kleiner tip. Entspann dich, Bruder 😅

They go to so much trouble to be baroque and yet the bows are modern. This has to effect the sound for staccato passages. The bass is singing in a dead zone. No wonder there are so many empty seats. Rudi had the bass come on and stand next to the tenor and then leave. The editing gives only microseconds of the players and their instruments (unless they are solo)- It is maddening to have to keep pausing. Whoever told the editor that flashing frames at viewers was a good idea ?

Aus meiner Sicht ist der neue Kantor leider nicht so begabt wie Herr Biller

Part 1 is too rushed. St Matthew is not similar to St John Passion. This is a sublime meditation on suffering, pain and death, it needs more space and depth.

Auch dem amtierenden Thomaskantor sollte die Stadt, wie einstmals dem Herrn Bachen, ein ebenbürtiges Wams zur Verfügung stellen, auf dass er es in seinen Dienstzeiten und Aufführungen tragen könne, somit ihm möglich sei, all zu viel seiner weißen, unbedecketen Haut zu accompagnieren...

Darauf würde ich drucken: Hier dirigiert ein Triathlet, der das "blaue Band" der schnellsten Aufführung der Matthäus Passion erringen will. Ober will er in das Guinness Buch der Rekorde?. Und Bach kann sich nicht mehr wehren....

Das junge Publikum wendet sich von der klassischen Musik ab. Obwohl sich immer mehr junge Musiker mit hohen akademischen Abschlüssen präsentieren, ist das Konzertpublikum zu achtzig Prozent über sechzig Jahre alt und schrumpft allmählich. Wäre es bei großen Vokalwerken nicht sinnvoll, Untertitel in verschiedenen Sprachen anzubieten, damit jüngere Zuhörer die Bedeutung des Gesangs verstehen können?
