Bach: St Matthew Passion | Brandenburg Consort, Choir of King’s College Cambridge & Stephen Cleobury

Музыка

An inexhaustible wealth of musical inspiration and inner emotion characterize Johann Sebastian Bach’s (1685 - 1750) St Matthew Passion, a piece representing the zenith of Protestant church music. Premiered on Good Friday 1727, the Passion slipped into obscurity for a long time. It wasn’t until the performance of an abridged version under the baton of Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy in the year 1829 that a veritable Bach renaissance began - and the St Matthew Passion secured its rightful place in concert programs. Today, the 1736 edition is seen as the definitive version. The autograph survives to this day and is one of Bach’s most precious original scores.
This video records a performance of the St Matthew Passion in the chapel of King’s College Cambridge in the year 1994 and features one of the finest ensembles performing on historical instruments.

The clarity is outstanding and the performance is second to none. I'm glad someone took the trouble to record it. I consider this to be Bach's greatest work. (And yet, at one point, Bach was no larger than the period at the end of this sentence. That's the true miracle.)

“ 1:40:41”Made in England“ qué macana! Correctamente sería “Made in Saxony”. Señor Gallardoz puede ser que usted es chileno y crónicamente anglófilo? No quiero disminuir la alta calidad de la actuación, pero el hecho de que el coro y la orquesta sean ingleses no convierte la obra en más que lo que ya es. Una exquisita expresión de la genialidad de su creador Johann Sebastian Bach, Sajón.

This music is so beautiful. It brings tears to my eyes as I listen to it. JS Bach is an absolute genius. As far as this version is concerned, I think the Choir of Kings College-Cambridge and Brandenburg Consort have done a remarkable job. I have no complaints. Sure, maybe if this were recorded today, the sound and the video would be a tad better, but I am not going to find fault with this version because of that. The orchestra and choir did an outstanding job, what more is there to say.

I don't quite get the sense of tension, drama, premonition in the opening that the score is crying out for. It's all a bit delicate. BTW, Dame Emma, as lovely as the voice is, is hardly an original instrument. Might as well have a female choir with boy soloists - that would be just as silly. A cursory glance at the historical facts would reveal that J.S. would have been more likely to use castrati, had he been a Catholic musician in a Catholic land. Never, ever women in church, "protestant" or Catholic.
