Bach - Können Tränen meiner Wangen‬ from St Matthew Passion BWV 244 | Netherlands Bach Society

Музыка

‘Können Tränen meiner Wangen’ from 'St Matthew Passion' (BWV 244) by J.S. Bach.
Performed by the Netherlands Bach Society conducted by Jos van Veldhoven.
Soloist: Alex Potter (Alto)
The St Matthew Passion tells the story of the last days of Jesus. He is betrayed, tried, crucified and buried. The lyrics were compiled by Picander (the pseudonym of Christian Friedrich Henrici), probably in close consultation with Bach himself. For their theme, they took the story as told by St Matthew the Evangelist. As different groups or people have their say, the singers get different roles - Christ, Judas, Peter, a slave girl, the pupils, the high priests, the people and the soldiers, etc.
At key moments in the story, Bach and Picander added chorales and arias as a reflection of the biblical story. The action is suspended and the events are placed in the theological context of Bach’s day.
The chorale lyrics and melodies come from the Lutheran hymn book, and were well known to the congregation in Leipzig. Even though Bach’s harmonies were new, everyone would have recognised the melody and the words. The lyrics for the opening and closing choruses and the arias were brand new, however. Both the arias and the chorales often link up seamlessly with the evangelical words.

I almost don’t believe one human could have written even just this, let alone the whole St. Matthew’s Passion, the Missa in B minor, the suites, violin sonatas (maybe the greatest thing ever written until Erwartung)... I think I could spend my life just listening to Bach’s choral work and never be want of anything else.

This is absolutely incredible. Imagine it's early 18th century, you're a poor German farmer, and your ears only have experience with the sounds of wind, rain, hardship, and animals. Then Bach writes this. Your life would be changed forever. My life the same.

@@esqrt Bach's cantatas were performed in the regularly church services which took a few hours. But, you are right:Bach worked in the town churches, where especially a farmer don't used to go; they had their own churches in the villages with doubtful musicianship. But I suppose ordinary people also visited the churches in town and heard Bach's music. However, we also have to remind that there wasn't many time for practicing the cantatas Bach wrote the same week, so it might be more prima vista playing than high-class performances as those of the Netherlands Bach Society.

@@esqrt There actually is evidence that on various sunday mornings they had to leave the windows and church doors open so that the masses on Leipzig market square could participate and listen. Contrary to what some snobbish Bachians today believe Bach made music for the man on the street. In BWV 40 for instance Bach ended the cantata with a funny and cheerful piece that resembles the farmer's life in the coutryside with oboes imitating chicken, etc. He wrote it explicitly for farmers so that they would have a nice melody to whistle on their way back home. Unlike unimaginative modern people today, early 18th century people were absolutely able to comprehend what Bach's cantatas were about.

@@esqrt much (very much) classical choral music (as well as orchestral) was actually derived from folk song heard among the country inhabitants. and many peasants were happy and sang often and the tunes would be adopted by cultured city folk. they also had ancient traditional numbers and chants, even pieces for communicating over distance as in over field and valley and mountain, etc. music is very old and not all people of the land were poor and hapless, but strong and healthy and resourceful! the same goes for dance! : )
