Bach - Erbarme dich, mein Gott from St Matthew Passion BWV 244 | Netherlands Bach Society

Музыка

‘Erbarme dich, mein Gott’ from 'St Matthew Passion' (BWV 244) by J.S. Bach.
Performed by the Netherlands Bach Society conducted by Jos van Veldhoven.
Soloists: Tim Mead (Alto), Shunske Sato (violin)
The St Matthew Passion tells the story of the last days of Jesus. He is betrayed, tried, crucified and buried. The lyrics were compiled by Picander (the pseudonym of Christian Friedrich Henrici), probably in close consultation with Bach himself. For their theme, they took the story as told by St Matthew the Evangelist. As different groups or people have their say, the singers get different roles - Christ, Judas, Peter, a slave girl, the pupils, the high priests, the people and the soldiers, etc.
At key moments in the story, Bach and Picander added chorales and arias as a reflection of the biblical story. The action is suspended and the events are placed in the theological context of Bach’s day.
The chorale lyrics and melodies come from the Lutheran hymn book, and were well known to the congregation in Leipzig. Even though Bach’s harmonies were new, everyone would have recognised the melody and the words. The lyrics for the opening and closing choruses and the arias were brand new, however. Both the arias and the chorales often link up seamlessly with the evangelical words.

I don’t think Bach would have agreed with your sentiment - the gospel points to life after death in the presence of the Lord Jesus to which Bach dedicated many of his works.

at 5:46, his face, and the somber way he closes the book and walks away really conveys a deep sense of emotion. When you realize what the lyrics mean, and the impact of the words he just sang, you understand why he would feel this way after singing it. Such a powerful passage. Erbarme dich, mein Gott, Um meiner Zähren willen! Schaue hier, Herz und Auge Weint vor dir bitterlich. Erbarme dich, mein Gott. Have mercy, my God, for the sake of my tears! Wonderful rendition. Again, I cried. I cannot but cry whenever I hear this aria. As I was starting to listen, I looked out the window and noticed that there was a soft snow falling on white-coated rooftops here in Brooklyn, NYC. I swear, I think Bach wrote this marvelous aria while looking out at a soft falling snow too, coating the rooftops of whatever German town he wrote this in. It just fits the mood, the atmosphere of this masterpiece of sadness. Then I inadvertently lowered my tearing eyes and saw my succulent plant in front of my window, which has a pot shaped like a skull in the manner of Dia de Muertos. The whole accidental mise-en-scene sent shivers down my spine--death draws near. We must be forgiven.

Does all humanity have this profundity, which only a genius like Bach can probe? Is this what we would all find if we knew ourselves better? Or are there some whose souls span the deep sea and the mountaintop, while the rest of us walk on flat earth? This piece leaves me with questions. A human being, who loved pipe tobacco and coffee like so many of us, wrote this. Living adjacent to a boys dormitory, with a large family, in what must have been an environment bustling at best, chaotically interruptive at worst. Will anyone ever be able to communicate like this again? If an extraterrestrial race looks on our violence and cruelty, inhumanity, greed, and despair, and decides that we are better destroyed, like an infestation of ants, or cancerous sore, this is what I would play for them. We have betrayed all the best that we are. But have mercy on us.

A very touching and contemplative athmosphere thanks to the pationate musicians. For me one of the most valid interpretations amongst x-100drets I have heard. This out-of-the-world-aria deserves the best musicans and here they are. Thanks from the bottom of my heart!

The first time I heard this piece it was sung in English by the incomparable contralto Eula Beal accompanied on violin by Yehudi Menuhin. It was so pure and plaintive that it brings tears every time I hear it.

Danke
