LYRICS (English Translation):
[Verse 1]
The sky decorated in a spectrum of dreams
I wanted to look at it forever
Even the bright star that was shining yesterday
(I don't know what to say, I don't know what to say)
Is fading away
[Chorus]
That monochrome
Firework
What color can we imagine the night sky?
[Verse 2]
Being drenched by the rain and freezing in the night
I wanted to be by your side even just for a little while
The warmth I want to feel until tomorrow
(You don’t have to say it, you don’t have to say it)
Will vanish eventually
[Chorus]
That monochrome
Firework, we will
Imagine the night sky in rainbow colors
[Bridge]
During the dusk of Ragnarok
What are we to see
No matter how long the night
The morning will arrive
See upcoming rock shows
Get tickets for your favorite artists
[Chorus]
Monochrome
Firework, we will
Illuminate the world in rainbow colors
Just smile

Great interpretation guys. I thought that the tree symbolised the Survivor Tree at Hiroshima, which remained intact close to the blast centre. Once I found out that Su was born in Hiroshima, the imagery seemed to make sense. As others have mentioned, the live version of Monochrome at Pia Arena is a truly jaw dropping performance, especially the crowd interaction. I saw a cut down version in Sydney last year. We will happily forgive you for doing a second reaction to the same song!

Great thoughtful reaction . The meaning i think is left to the listeners to make up their own story Just a thought i read that when the bomb dropped on Hiroshima afterwards the people almost immediately started to clear away the rubble and rebuild there city to the vibrant beautiful city it is today . Apoplectic events dont always have to mean the end of everything . it could be maybe a new begaining . I would check out the live version of this song . I have been at 3 shows they performed it and felt so positive about things after experiencing it . 😁🤘🏼🦊🤘🏼

The first time I heard the song and saw the video, for some reason I failed to make the connection with the bombs. The song didn‘t even feel that emotional and melancholic to me. Only after that I realized what it‘s (probably) about. So in an unusual fashion, it was the second and subsequent listens that made me tear up. Especially with the knowledge that Su is from Hiroshima, it gained a whole new quality and had a much bigger impact on me. Suddenly I started to feel the emotion in the melodies and vocals. It‘s fascinating that context has such a big influence on the perception of a song.

Great reaction and interpretations, guys! Monochrome is written to mean exactly what it means. To You. That is one of the great things about this song and why it is so personal and emotional to each of us. It doesn't matter if the reason is the same when the emotions are the same. I think we are all getting there but, by different ways. I love this song in each and every version so far. Kitsune Up! I'll see you at the tree smiling my face off.

Really great thoughtful reaction, once again. I really look forward to the dialogues in your Babymetal reactions. One thing that this really demonstrates is what a long road Babymetal have traveled from "Gimme Chocolate" to "Monochrome". And impressively they've done this without losing their essential nature. Their whole journey has been an evolution but never an evolution where they've lost who they are. I've heard and thought defferent things about the meaning of this song. And it's intended vagueness I believe is there to let we listeners draw our own conclusions. You can draw or not anything you want from this but Su's birthplace is Hiroshima.

Yes, as is with most great art, it leaves things vague enough to get us thinking and it is much more fun to interpret this kind if lyrics. Such a great song from a great band! BTW, we have discussions on songs from other bands as well which you might appreciate, so please check those out. Great reaction. When they first released this lyric video most people were interpreting the visuals in much the same way as you. They will not explain a precise meaning and prefer to leave it up to the individual to find their own interpretation and meaning. Su has said she was surprised at the fans' interpretations since she thought it was a nice uplifting song. If you read the lyrics from start to finish (rather than from finish to start - that takes you the wrong way) it is not specific and starts off with you in the darkest place trying to imagine colour in the night sky. From there we are imagining the sky in rainbow colours and we get the hopeful message that "no matter how long the night, the morning will arrive". Ragnarok was the end of all things, but there were survivors and the tree of life (the name of which escapes me). Perhaps this is the belief that everything seems dark and hopeless - but that won't last for ever despite how it seems ... and finally we are illuminating not just the sky but the world in rainbow colours. "Just smile" ... and that final frame in colour after the whole video was in black & white. Other comments have also said (and I assume this is right - I couldn't tell you what a minor or major key is) how the song changes from the minor key (which sounds sad) at the start through a mix of minor and major to end in the major key (which is happier and more uplifting). There is a beautiful piano version on The First Take - and the live at PIA Arena in April 2023 is excellent.

Thank you for taking the time to view and engage. Much appreciated! Just re-iterating, I (Itai) did not read the lyrics from finish to start, I read them as I watched the video chronologically. However, my interpretation hit me at the end, so I traced backward to see that I wasn't "getting something wrong" and found these breadcrumbs that told me my interpretation (whether meant by the writers of the lyrics or not) is valid. It was actually a very interesting process and added to the intrigue. Such a great song! Thanks again!

@@Grington300 It's similar to Starlight - Shine - Arkadia, the lyrics are not very specific. When I first saw the Monochrome lyric video my impression also was that it refers to the atomic bomb. And at that time I did not even know Su is from Hiroshima, it was purely due to the symbols used in the video, the umbrella as "protection" from bombs or fallout, the destroyed builings and finalyl the one living tree that reminded me of the story of one tree in a park in Hiroshima that survived the blast. But from the start the song has these positive vibes about painting the sky in bright colours which is a bit of a contrast to the dark images shown. You are right, the most important thing is what a song means to you and many Babametal songs are emotionally touching, mostly in a postive way, even without knowing the lyrics.

I feel that this song is a bit more optimistic than even if humans become extinct, life will eventually return. I take it more as humans are resilient and that history is full of events that humans have survived. Many fans also saw the connection to Japan's history, especially given that the lead singer Su0metal is a native of Hiroshima, and some of her grandparents witnessed and survived the bomb. But Su says that was not what was in her mind when she sings this, although she did not say what was. As with many Babymetal things, it's open to interpretation, and I went there as well.. I take it as a more positive song, It starts out in a minor key, and moves to somewhere between minor and major, and ends up in a major key as it tells the story, At the start the sky is monochrome, and we imagine it as rainbow colors, and then as the song progresses at the end we will paint the world in rainbow colors as each of our colors shines. I really think you two have a great and accurate take on this beautiful song. 👊🏽⚡️It was interesting that Su-Metal said she was a little surprised that many people thought the song was sad and dark. @@faceplantor5647 There is definitely positivity in there, but it all comes from some kind of massive disaster, so there is also darkness. It can be looked at as a yin and yang type of thing, where without darkness there can be no light. In any way, I (Itai) believe that it is the ambiguity that makes it special lyrically. The visuals enhance that somewhat and the music is divine.

Great reaction guys! While we all can and will interpret it differently, here's what I think the song means: It speaks of someone experiencing a major tragedy _(the Monochrome fireworks),_ which robs them of something important _(Star that fades, warmth of a loved one that vanishes),_ leaving them wondering what tomorrow will bring _(How will we imagine the colors of the night sky?)._ However, despite the chaos and "apocalypse" _(Ragnorak/end of days),_ we must find hope for a better tomorrow _(We WILL illuminate the world in rainbow colors)._ The music video's Hiroshima imagery is, in my opinion, utilized to represent the most tragic and grave of events that can befall us. However, despite this, we WILL find confidence to push towards a hopeful tomorrow: "No matter how long the night, the morning will arrive. Just smile!" This is further highlighted with the song ending on bright colors surrounding the tree amidst an apocalyptic hellscape, representing rebirth. In my opinion, the tree is Yggdrasil, the tree of life, following up on Ragnorak, if we're going with the Norse mythology theme here. Finally, I hope you guys get to check out the live version as well! The theme of overcoming a tragedy is also present as Su tells the crowd to "illuminate the dark world" in a crowd engagement section. 🤘🦊
