Babylonian Magic - The Maqlu Ritual - Invoking the Gods to Destroy Evil Magic

The Maqlu ritual is an ancient Mesoptoamian ritual invoking the Shamash, the god of the sun and justice, the destroy those that work evil magic and to unbind that sorcery. This ancient, 3000 year old ritual, is among the most complex forms of counter-magic known in the world. Join me as I explore this fascinating magical ritual!

Asafetida!!! I remember when I was a boy, a piece of asafetida was hung by a string around my neck to ward off my catching a cold in winter. For those who don't know, it's a brown resin, supposed to smell really bad (I sort of liked the smell, actually). I never head that head colds were caused by evil spirits, but I suppose asafetida has been used for that for thousands of years

It's really a pity that so much of these ritual texts remain basically in volumes for experts in the respective ancient languages, Assyrian, Akkadian, Sumerian, Old Babylonian, etc., especially given how foundational those civilizations are to, well, civilization and how popular they are in the public consciousness. Sadly, because of that gap all manner of 'Anunnaki ancient alien' nonsense has rushed in to fill it. Hopefully I can circle back to this material soon!

often wondered if the idea of the burning purification idea came after we started cooking meat, and how the burning/cooking seemed to stop many diseases and parasites, this burning/purification is old and found all over the world, the ancient druids used to do this same thing, running their bulls through the flames to purify them, for example

Yes! I am so glad to hear you advocating that kind of interdisciplinary investigation! I've been struggling for years to figure out how to increase the flow of dialogue between experts in the different fields I've been independently studying. It would do a lot to help with the Ancient Aliens problem that you described at the very end. That very body of literature has made it incredibly difficult for me to have intelligent discussions with my peers about a lot of esoteric topics. I would really just like to get to a point where these topics can comfortably fit into our casual conversations. I think if we could establish a clearer picture of how our global religious ecosystem formed and for what purpose, we could arrive at conscious solutions to the unconscious problems that religious behaviors are designed to solve.

Coming in from latest and ultimate livestream of this year, thank you for this enthralling episode of Esoterica! As you might have said, endlessly fascinating, and the formidable challenge for practitioners to recreate and study ritual is without equal. I'm effusive at moment, just finally getting around to this with maybe a kind of critical mass stemming from here and there of finding starting praxis (yes, I get to use fancy word hopefully correctly) and then who knows. Recreate with relevant intermediate practicing experience under the belt and with Dr Justin Sledge as esoteric consultant along with highly respected practitioner authors and their acclaimed practice tomes, let's forge this baby maqlu ritual! Plus a handy trusty squire at ready with fire extuminguisher, of course. Thrill aside, thank you as well for excellent academically rigorous deep dive references! My synchronicity (to me) asking after ancient Library after Lilith episode leading me here is on point. What's Brill?

On a personal level I stay away from magic. I have never killed an animal for sacrifice or practice in the launage you describe Then I feel other want to hurt me. I name then ask it to leave my side I asked in my mind if it with not leave. I command it to be ground and go into the ground Then say a lot of word and launage I don't understand I get a glimpse in English of the word I speak but this launage is weird The reason I did not like spells or burning dolls is the fact it might rebound on me. It might simply staying away from places and people who practise the craft. I accept the magic is strong and in a master hand you can blow yourself of or worse and be stuck in a loop of what you crated. I know myself I stick to Prays and meditation. Not because I am super holy. Or hold any firm title. Magic is dangerous because it takes you over than it in charge not the person. I am fusey but I rather be fusey than sloppy Out of respect that oh what a web we weave then we Practice to deceive I know the symbol for order that good enough it was only after one of your video I looked up sign because you should me a sign I was draw to You think it's would be cool watching others practice from your piont of view I understand your mind wait to understand and experience see for yourself I get it but you try and find someone who will let you watch them. Would they let you explain what you studied afterwards It like me saying I like one of my favourite artists is going to ring me up. I think you're supposed cool and a very good teacher.

Nt is not divinely inspired at all. Christianity is the least credible of all religions and the easiest of all to prove wrong from 1000 angles. Their mistake was attaching it to the tanach. Couldn't prove it totally false from 1000 angles if they hadn't done that

I don’t think it’s necessarily sexist if the cultural belief is that only women can perform certain rituals. Men are the only ones able to perform rituals in other religions, and if all this is to be taken as ‘real’, I imagine the reasons would be the same as a purified individual being the only person who can perform magic in some circumstances, and not so in others... not saying women are unclean, just saying maybe there’s something about the difference that makes the ritual work 🤷‍♂️ ...sorry I’m late.

That might be true if it weren't for much larger social patterns of oppression that such exclusion fits in and supports. It could be both sexist and 'why it works' as well.

Fair enough. What I said is only an argument if magic is in the equation, but even if it is... demons could be sexist too. Never met any myself, so I’m not going to be some bigot and say they’re all sexist; but I can imagine they exist.

And here I thought you were called Esoterica just because you want your channel to sound like a symphonic metal band (a worthy reason). XD Ugh yes, the ancient aliens theories are cringe for many reasons, many of the worst being imo the harm to current peoples (if I understand correctly many conspiracy theories have an anti-Semitic element?) and the disrespect of ancient peoples' abilities. To lighten things again, I love your dry sense of humor. Keep the good content coming. :)
