    I met him around this time, a really nice guy. I didn't know he was struggling with very serious mental illness at this time or that it was the reason he could not continue on the show. It's a terrible shame since he had the looks and the natural charm to be the next big iconic TV star like Adam West or Shatner.

    Only started B5 recently (a week ago) without any prior knowledge. Because I've fallen in love with the characters and enjoying the series SO much, I did some research and found out about the illness - suddenly watching it, I've started recognizing so many things that I didn't pick up on before. How much of the dialog carries so much more importance now... Really glad to have found this vid. Even as a new fan, having never before followed the show, I'm saddened by the loss of this, I believe, great man. And also, am I the only 1 that could listen to him speak the WHOLE day? Perfect hypnotists voice! Makes even dumb stuff sound peaceful and beautiful.

    A truly amazing discussion by a most talented actor. I have the pleasure of watching the show on the Comet TV Channel now, and thoroughly enjoy it. This exchange from a B5 Fan Convention in 1995 is all the more amazing when you consider that Michael O’Hare wasn’t involved in the production at this stage, and would never appear on the show again. The depths of his comments, about the craft of acting onstage and on camera, is breathtaking. He is the reason that I was drawn to the show in 1994; when he left after the first season, I very nearly gave up on B5. I never quite understood or believed the stated reasons for his departure from the series. It was only after his passing that I came across J. Michael Straczynski’s explanation of why he left the show, and both his and Michael O’Hare’s concern for the rest of the cast and crew. The fact that they both kept his illness a secret says volumes about both of them, It’s amazing to watch him in front of an audience, knowing now how he struggled within to maintain his poise. Michael O’Hare was a class act. This comment from the video says it all: “As we grow, I believe part of our journey in life is to be able to see the signs - because they’re everywhere”. His portrayal of Commander Sinclair remains the standard by which sci-fi should be measured. Thanks to one and all involved - this was truly “our last, best hope”.

    I just finished season 1 and I'm heartbroken by the loss of Sinclair. I'm new to Babylon 5, watching it for the first time and I really adored O'Hare and when I looked him up on IMDB and saw he passed away and wasn't to be in season 2 I was really bummed. I loved his performance in this show. He was an odd combination of stoic and stiff yet charismatic. At times even if I wasn't paying close attention to the show, whenever Sinclair had a scene I'd snap to attention again. Really seemed a tremendous and humble guy.

    Wow. This is really a gem. This is the only time I've ever seen O'Hare out of character. And it's really fascinating because this is right when he was dealing with his mental issues that forced him to leave the show (according to JMS). It's been eluded to that he was really hard to deal with but you wouldn't know it just watching this video. He's genuinely funny, charming, interesting, personable etc...

    People often say he was a very wooden actor. I don't agree, I think it was more a case of his character being rather stoic, repressed and uptight, but also soft-spoken and reasonable. He played the character as it was written, and honestly I do still quite enjoy his performance as Sinclair.

    He was taking a lot of meds during filming and now when rewatching S1 you can see sometimes some signs of it, but this recording clearly proves he was very intelligent and charming person without it.

  • @TimeMaster77

    @TimeMaster77

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@mikemeyers400 JMS wrote that the issue was the LACK of the right meds. He needed them unfortunately and after finishing S1, they tried to find the right ones for him, to free him from his paranoid delusions and hallucinations, and it was a long process. But he never got 100% on meds, either. His life turned awry because he dropped from the pills later. This video must have been made on one of his better days, giving us an idea what he could have been like without his illnesses. If you check some of his early interviews among his Wikipedia references back from his student days, he comes across as a very, likely well above average intelligent person. He was gifted on several fields. But a serious mental illness can make anything out of anyone.

    O'Hare went through sheer hell, but he remained concerned with the welfare of the cast and crew. He was a good man suffering from a horrific condition, in a time when people still associated such illness with personal weakness or lack of character. That people continue to suffer with such things, while being denied comfort for their pain is a great shame upon our society and its rather paleolithic views of mental health. Michael O'Hare suffered greatly, but through an act of sheer will and concern for his colleagues, completed that first season. He deserves to be remembered for what he did and the compassion he showed his colleagues while the world showed him very little.

    What a natural calm ...maybe the stress of an acting job sent him over the edge ...prolonged stress , lack of sleep can do strange things to the mind

    While he's funny, you can kind of see that he's a bit unfocused here, similar to a comedian using laughter to hide their pain. Also of you look closely, you can see his hand gestures get fidgety. He is clearly nervous and anxious but covering it up. I understand. I have Depression and Anxiety and it can be hard to hide it. But when your symptoms display themselves, you are accused of being difficult.

    It must have been very difficult for him to do this. I know what you mean about his hands. He seems like a bright, warm, engaging, genuinely nice and deeply attractive man. The universe is a little bit darker without him.

    42:16 "Here comes the bread and circuses! was what she'd say .... And she's not half wrong about that ... I think it's time to pull our horns in a little bit in western society before we all go right out the window" .... wow ... talk about a premonition in 2021 from 1995!!

    He said he'd love to write, direct and/or produce....maybe he should have pursued that...that way his life might have been different being away from the camera...could have taken the edge off and he could have channeled his inner torment

    I wish he could have remained the lead on the show. Such a tragedy.
