Baby Seal Saved From Tight Strap

Most entanglements are caused by discarded fishing gear. Packing straps could also originate from elsewhere, but we see this type of packing straps on fishing vessels, mainly used for bait boxes. The fishing industry is responsible for unnecessary pain and suffering. For now, mainly marine animals pay the price, but this will backfire on us sooner or later.

Cheeky seal, sneaking a head start when Antoine and Denzil are going to save you! It makes me smile when Antoine tells the seals which particular type of rubbish they are wearing, but I love it most when they waddle off - not always happily admittedly - with their lives ahead of them. Thank you both for braving the rocks and saving this seal.😊❤

Our efforts are just a drop in the bucket compared to the millions of tonnes of trash entering the world's oceans every year. We are unfortunately not solving the problem, but only treating the symptoms of the plastic crisis with our rescues. These videos aim to show the consequences of this pollution and create a change to tackle its roots - namely our addiction to single-use plastics, the lack of law enforcement at sea, and the shortcomings of the recycling industry.

I absolutely support your efforts to help these injured seals. I have been wondering something, though, and seeing 1000+ seals scrambling over rocks in a mad dash really brought my question home: Is there a possibility that the energy expenditure by all the other seals fleeing to the water, including potentially weak or sick ones, could actually be significant enough that any of them succumb to their condition and die while you deal with an entanglement on a different seal? I wish they wouldn't dash off in such desperation. It just feels like there could easily be unintended consequences to this. Humanity really needs to do better at keeping our oceans clean.

  • @OceanConservationNamibia

We would not be using these tactics if some animals were indeed getting crushed to death or even injured in the stampede. From a very young age, Cape fur seal pups are tough enough to handle adults walking - sometimes charging - over them. We do not perform any rescues from November to January when the newborns are indeed too small to swim or to handle the older, bigger fur seals running over them.

Thank you so much for saving this life ! I know this isn't the main goal of OCN but I kind of miss the longer videos tho, I know it is much more editing work but these short videos are proven to reduce attention span and are not as relevant as the longer one in my opinion... This is just a small opinion, I fully understand that OCN is and remains for plastic pollution sensibilisation through seal saving first (amongst other actions) and that social media activities come after that !

Wow, once removed you can see just how small that circle is! What would you say the diameter is? Imagine that around your neck, even if it's not cutting. I wish there were some way to have an ID embedded in those straps, so you could identify with a handheld device it's manufacturer and who bought it. People need to be held accountable in some meaningful way or this will never end. If this were happening to people, there would be urgent efforts made to find a real solution.

We are not sure actually. The price of a camera able to scan the animals from the distance we need to be to not spook them is far too high for us. Then, we believe we could probably see wounds through this device, but a lot of tests would have to be made in order to understand the difference between an entangled animal and a recapture. Of course, if there is no cut, there is no loss of body heat through the fur or infection. Our logic is to intervene as fast as possible when we spot an entangled animal, and these tests would be very time-consuming and frustrating.

Drones are very useful to survey Cape fur seal colonies, especially during breeding season, but they are useless to spot entangled animals. The majority of the marine litter we rescue these animals from only weighs a few grams and is very difficult to spot from the ground - let alone the sky.
